STAR WARS: Daisy Ridley Says "It Feels Like We Should" Get John Boyega Back As Finn For Rey-Focused Movie

After persistent rumors, we finally got confirmation that Daisy Ridley is set to return as Rey for a new post-sequel trilogy Star Wars movie during 2023's Star Wars Celebration event.

Ridley will reprise her role as Rey "Skywalker" for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie, which will be set a whole fifteen years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know that Rey will be a "powerful Jedi master" running her own training academy when we catch up with her.

Shortly after the announcement, rumors began to do the rounds that John Boyega was set to join his co-star as former Stormtrooper Finn. Ridley was asked about the reports while speaking to THR on the red carpet for her latest film, Young Woman and the Sea, and while she mostly side-stepped the question, she did offer the following.

"Absolutely, of course," responded Ridley when asked if she'd like to see Rey and Finn back together again. "It feels like we should, yeah.”

Finn and Rey grew very close over the course of the three sequel films, but despite the characters being "shipped" by a lot of fans, they never formed a romantic relationship.

At one point during The Rise of Skywalker, Finn told Rey that he needed to tell her something... and never brought it up again.

Was he going to express his true feelings, or tell Rey he was Force-sensitive? We may never find out, but there's a chance this abandoned plot point might factor into this new movie if Boyega does indeed end up reprising the role.

Ridley recently addressed her return as the powerful Force-wielder for the first time since Celebration during an interview with Collider.

"I was shitting myself before I went on stage, because no one knew I was going to that," she said of her surprise appearance at the Celebration panel. "No one knew I was going to Celebration, bar like Kathy [Kennedy] and there were a couple of people. I was so nervous. Oh my God. It was such a wonderful reception. I'm very excited. The story is really cool. I'm waiting to read a script because, obviously, I don't have any other updates. It's not what I expected, but I'm very excited."

Ridley remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, but she did reveal that she believes the untitled film ("Star Wars: A New Beginning" has been rumored) will be the next big-screen Star Wars project to enter production.

"I know the storyline for one film. That's not to say that that's all it is, but that's what I was told about. And I imagine it will be the next film, I think. I mean, again, I don't know, post strikes and everything, how quickly everything will start up again. But yes, so far, I know the story of one film and I think people will be very excited."

In a separate interview with THR, Ridley spoke about being pitched the idea over breakfast. She also notes that she hasn't actually read the script yet, but does know the story.

"I had a breakfast with Kathy [Kennedy] that I thought was just breakfast. (Laughs.) And then it was mentioned, so I thought about it. I loved the story, and I was like, “Okay.” Things then happened quite quickly, and it felt like I was instantaneously on a stage being introduced by [director] Sharmeen [Obaid-Chinoy]. It honestly took me back to being 20 or 21, however old I was, when [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] was announced. I was petrified, I was overwhelmed, I was really nervous but the response was really wonderful. And I’m genuinely really excited about the next one. I haven’t read anything, but I know the story. It’s really worth telling, worth exploring, and I think people will be excited."

John Boyega got screwed man! The thing about the Force Awakens trailer that interested me most when it came out was the idea of a Storm Trooper defecting and seeing his journey. Then they just made him a joke.

@PC04 - agreed. And for some reason, when they finally decided to explore that they gave that arc to someone else. Jannah didn't need to be there

@bkmeijer1 - I thought she was fine but if she is force sensitive like Finn , it would be cool to see her as a Jedi in this like him and the others in her company.

@TheVisionary25 - if she's force sensitive, then she really took Finn's entire arc. I rather would've seen that group of ex-troopers leaderless, with Finn taking up that role

@bkmeijer1 - probably but I kinda like the idea of more then one Stormtrooper being For e sensitive , I feel that makes sense whether the First Order knew it or not.

Just imagine a group of these…

@PC04 - I felt like the filmmakers thought the it was a just cool idea to have a Storm Trooper leave the evil empire and joining the good guys but nothing more meaningful than that.

@TheVisionary25 - that would be pretty cool honestly. If they have those tactical insight force cues like Finn, they could be pretty effective and lethal

@bkmeijer1 - John Boyega should comeback to Star Wars and in Daisy Ridley's new movie as Rey's love interest the romance between them that should of happened between them in the Rise of the Skywalker instead of a forced romance between Kylo Ren and Rey that romance between them came out of nowhere and that kiss between them wasn't even romantic infact JJADAMS said so infact Daisy Ridley's character hated Kylo Ren so why did they get them together romantically instead of getting Finn and Rey together romantically? Or was so hinted at between Finn and Rey in the Force Awakening and the writers needs to build back up that romance that they once had in Force Awakening in Rey's new movie. That's the only reason why I will go see it.

@ButterflyHeart - agreed. TFA really set up something between them, only for TLJ and TROS throwing that out the window with Rose and Ben respectively

Some characters worked and some didn't, but the story was a genuine dankmeme. You had millions of opportunities to continue a plethora of stories within the original or prequel trilogy, I'm sure building the star wars world had something to do with it. They didn't think Tatooine would have been the better option? Lmao

@bobevanz - They dropped the ball with so many characters!

Ackbar was just flushed out to space and barely acknowledged, he should have taken the place of Holdo on the kamikaze run! would have left Holdo as a counterpoint for Poe.

Rose.. I mean wtf were they even thinking there... "I'll save Finn with love... by crashing into him and potentially killing or injuring one or both of us"...

I agree. If someone should be next Grandmaster of the New Jedi Order, it should be Finn. He knows what it's like to need a place to belong and the Jedi Order can offer that to others. Same with rebuilding institutions, he knows what's it like to be part of those that don't work.

The last trilogy sucked. Abrams set the tone with his sh!t agenda which doomed it all from the start.

Instead of moving forward and making some completely new Star Wars stuff, we get more of the same junk incoming.

Rey was passable leading those lousy movies. Finn was given terrible material, yet still did a bad job with the role.

Q: Why would they push for Finn back, but not Oscar Isaacs? Oh, yeah. Sorry I asked...

I wouldn’t mind seeing Finn back but I doubt Boyega returns though you never know.

I thought he was alright overall as a character , his journey of someone who was forced into a war initially since he was a child but then defects though ultimately out of his own agency & choice decides to be apart of something bigger then himself was well done to an extent…

However , he didn’t have much of anything to work with TROS and I wish they had given him the arc leading other stormtroopers to defect & rebel from Trevorrow’s Duel of The Fates instead of this supposedly force sensitive one that did feel like it kinda came out of nowhere.

Regardless , if he does come back then I hope he’s done better and is a Master Jedi at this point please!!.

Wait, do people really think he was telling rey he was force sensitive when they were sinking in the sand? Because it was so obviously him expressing his feelings for her. Hence why he said it when they were about to die and why he refused to answer what he was saying when they were all safe. Like, why would that be something he'd want to keep secret? Him being force sensitive is nothing but a net gain for the cause.

I like the characters of Rey and Finn but given that they defeated Palpatine and the resistence had the epic battle at the end of Rise of Skywalker, it is hard to see them continue their story which at this point would be anti-climactic.

Their star wars never appealed to me like the original and largely due to characters. Weren't as interesting as Lea, Luke and especially Han and their interactions. Even the droids, chewie. All interesting plus Vader.

Do an Attack of the Clones remake with an army of Boyegas all taking their helmets off. Repeatedly. For 130 minutes.

They need to bring the REAL Luke Skywalker back and have him start the new Jedi order.

I believe no one else should return.

@Slotherin - The Luke that was in the Rey lead movies was an idiot and didn't act like Luke we know, also he was nowhere near as powerful as she was and the Luke in the Mandalorian was the real deal.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/21/2024, 12:27 PM
@SteelGunZ - Luke in Mandalorian was also in his prime...
I could be wrong but even Vader and Obi Wan have similar inconsistency in power that mostly seems to relate to having aged. So that's somewhat forgiveable to me.
Luke in TLJ also was disconnected from the Force intentionally and displayed different use of the Force anyway (opting to use astral projection as opposed to being as direct... Which also makes sense to me with age being a factor to not be as head-on)
