A Wrinkle in Time and New Gods director Ava DuVernay has announced that her good friend Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to The Sky, Misfits) will join J.J. Abrams on Star Wars: Episode IX as second unit director.

Though Abrams is obviously at the helm of the picture, this is still a pretty big deal as Mahoney becomes the first black woman to take on a directorial role in the long history of the iconic franchise.

You can check out DuVernay's Tweet and Mahoney's response below. The still untitled Star Wars Episode IX is set to release in theaters on December 20, 2019.

@Kman - yea i've realized the old school cats hardcore one like you @nomis and @supercat who grew up on it had a very hard time with it and the transition ..... what i find the most interesting is that force awakens was refined version of new hope , but tlj was drastically different..... which makes you wonder if they find balance between both films would it all parties enjoy ?

@knocturnalzen10 - I like the character of Rey and her being the next in line... and TFA was pretty good as a lead up to something. But the payoff was just, a big time bummer. Some of it had to do with my feelings towards the old trilogy and legacies and some if it had to do with the consistency from TFA to TLJ. It was a mixture of things.

@Kman - yea , i grew up with it as well being a 80's kid but wasn't over the top with it. but i had great respect for the legacy of the story , i was a bit lost in the direction the audience was forced to go towards .

@knocturnalzen10 - With Kennedy still running things. NO!

The Last Jedi killed my desire to even read the books.

Off-topic: Owen Paterson (Godzilla, The Matrix trilogy, Captain America: Civil War) to serve as production designer in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Second unit directors usually shoot pick up scenes or other additional material. In other words, WHO CARES? Slow news day.

Speaking of Duvernay, she absolutely massacred "A Wrinkle in Time". She was so fixated on making a "statement" with the casting that she forgot to create a decent film. What a disaster.

Duvernay is such an overrated director. "Selma" would have been a decent made-for-TV movie and definitely did not deserve the accolades it received, but was overhyped due to the subject matter and the media's desire to overpraise anything done by a female or minority filmmaker. It's actually insulting.
