STAR WARS: EPISODE IX Director J.J. Abrams Says The Script Is Complete; Confirms Late July Shoot Date

When J.J. Abrams replaced Colin Trevorrow as the director of the still untitled Star Wars: Episode IX, we all knew he was going to be under a lot of pressure to map out the story and deliver a new draft of the script - and deliver he has.

Abrams was quizzed about the final instalment of the new Star Wars trilogy when he appeared as a guest on The Late Show, and while he obviously wasn't about to give any plot details away, he did reveal that the script is finished while also confirming that production is set to commence this July.

“We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July. Having a script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have. I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who is a genius, and I’m having a great time.”

It'll be interesting to see how Abrams and Terrio approach this after the bold decisions Rian Johnson made with The Last Jedi. Will we see some retconning of the more "controversial" story elements, perhaps?

We'll find out when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theatres next year.

Interesting how TFA started shooting in April, TLJ in February and IX will start in July, considering all of them had December release dates.

@Pantherpool - And they all had (and IX most likely will have) a year for post-production.

TFA was shot in Sping-summer 2014
TLJ was shot in Spring-summer 2016
IX will shoot Summer-Fall 2018.

@kylo0607 - TFA was actually shooting until November 2014.

I just find it weird that the schedules are that different, I would expect them to be pretty much identical.

@Pantherpool - Oh was it? My mistake then.

In the grand picture, it doesn't matter. IX will still have almost a year for post-production.

Hopefully JJ can right the ship and, in retrospect, make The Last Jedi more palatable.

"I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who is a genius.."

I've heard this for years, but haven't really seen him deliver in a huge way since Argo.

@DannRamm113 - Any goodwill he had after Argo was gone after everything else he did his entire career, one good movie does not make him a genius in my book.
