The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed to a local publication that Disney/Lucasfilm will be shooting scenes for Star Wars: Episode VII off the coast of Co. Kerry in Ireland. Apparently they'll be filming around Skellig Michael (Irish: Sceilig Mhichíl) -- an island in the Atlantic Ocean, 11.6 km west of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. The Skellig is an impressive sight to behold, and is also home to some ancient Christian Monastic ruins which could no doubt be utilized for some atmospheric shots. Star Wars: Episode VII began shooting earlier this year in Abu Dhabi and London, but it's not yet known when filming will commence in Kerry. The movie is scheduled for release on December 18th, 2015.

It's super cool to know they're filming on locations, rather than just in a production studio.

That's the one with the little monk-huts, innit? Wonder what they'll use 'em for.

Will you and Josh try to get spy shots of the set?

...wait a minute, why am I thinking of Ireland as if it was a small island the size of Hawaii?

Oh that's right...because I'm an American and thus know nothing about the world outside 'Murica!

In fairness though, the islands of Ireland are better than any other islands on the planet. Especially Inis Oírr, mother[frick]ers got a wrecked ship on it's western coast and a church that's sunk into the mother[frick]ing ground!

I love my country.

I'd imagine the women are significantly more attractive.

But then again, I have a thing for redheads and assume everyone there is ginger. Is black Irish really a thing?

There are black people here, @McGee, but most of them are African immigrants and put on Irish accents. Don't wanna seem racist but some of them sound ridiculous with Irish accents.

Jaysis, how many Paddies are there on this site anyway? Didn't you just get electricity last year? (Just kidding. I know Ireland has had electricity for well over two decades now.)

Nice to see the entire movie won't be a green screen nightmare like certain other Star Wars films...

@Rex add another Paddy here.

Also, the prequels did a lot of location shooting. It's a myth that they were mostly shot in the studio.

Besides Tunisia for Tatooine where did they shoot on location for the prequels? Cuz Tron looked more real.

One of the best scenes in Hellboy 2 was at the Giants Causeway with the leprechaun with the Northern Ireland accent. It had me grinning from ear to ear.

This is very Star Wars looking territory. I hope we still get cutting edge CGI as Star Wars is known for breaking ground in visual effects, but this is going to be great to get more on location shooting as well as some studio stuff.
