STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER Writer Talks Lightsabers And Deciding NOT To Include "Legacy Characters"

Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter, discusses lightsabers being part of the movie and the decision not to feature any "legacy characters."

This May's The Mandalorian and Grogu will bring Disney+'s biggest TV series to theaters, but Lucasfilm will move beyond the Skywalker Saga next year with filmmaker Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter.

Set 5 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, we're heading into uncharted territory. It was recently revealed that Starfighter is going to feature lightsaber battles, suggesting there will still be enough Jedi (and Sith?) action for longtime Star Wars fans.

Screen Rant (via SFFGazette.com) recently spoke with Starfighter writer Jonathan Tropper, who confirmed that he and Levy set out to "tell a completely new story" with the movie. He added that they "weren't bound by any structures of the past movies," and reiterated that this adventure won't feature appearances from any "legacy characters."

"Obviously, lightsabers are a part of that universe and that part of that Galaxy," Tropper shared. "I'm so careful not to reveal anything, but essentially, I think it's known that we have no legacy characters. You're not going to see any of the characters you've seen in the other movies."

"So there are certain things that are still hallmarks of Star Wars that it's good to have in there. But more than that, I can't say."

Unless it's planned as a major surprise, this presumably means we won't see Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker. During a recent interview with USA Today, the actress was asked if we can expect news on the character's planned solo outing this year and replied, "I don't know about 2026. In the future sometime, yeah."

This comes after a recent report from Daniel Richtman, who said that if The Mandalorian and Grogu underperforms at the box office, Dave Filoni's planned Mandoverse crossover movie would likely be worked into a Disney+ limited series.

Of course, with Filoni now calling the shots as Lucasfilm President in place of Kathleen Kennedy, we're expecting a little more structure from the studio in terms of the big and small screen projects that are developed. If Ridley's comments prove anything, though, it's that things are currently in a state of flux.

Star Wars: Starfighter's cast is led by Free Guy star Ryan Gosling. Joining him are Flynn Gray (Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2), Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), Mia Goth (Infinity Pool), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Hedda), Daniel Ings (Lovesick), and Amy Adams (Man of Steel).

Directed by Levy, the film is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy. Executive producers are Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen. The script is by Jonathan Tropper.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released theatrically on May 28, 2027.

Jedi and the force should be something special. Since the prequels those more supernatural elements became way too trivial and kind of lost their charm imho.

Btw the next trilogy should pass after like a thousand years after the battle of Yavin. Start fresh.

@Fogs - I think with the ebs and flow of history it’s fine to see a period where Jedi and the force were abundant. And in contrast to a time where they were so rare, ppl hardly believed they were real. I wouldn’t think it would be bad to hit that contrast button again and skip a 1000 years, like you said and have a time where dark side users are more prominent, doesn’t have to be sith could just be different factions but pure light side users are rare. Then we can watch how a dim light can brighten a room.

I always thought a cool future Star Wars story should be centered around droids and a Twisted Droid Antagonist and for the life in the galaxy to be in such danger that light side and dark side users would have to come together to stop a Droid villain, works well with our own worries about A.i and stuff now so it’s relevant. It’d probably be similar to the Butlerian Jihad in Dune that lead to the banning of thinking machines. But you put that through a Star Wars lens with the droids, the force and lightsabers and you can come up with something dope.

Fingers crossed we get Reva in this. We need to see how her story ends and if those rumours were true about her and Sheev being Rey's parents.

@MaxPaint - Nah, it will live forever, rent free in the heads of former "fans" who still haunt comment sections day after day, loudly proclaiming to anyone within earshot, "You know Star Wars is dead, right? But I'm definitely not mad, because of course I don't care anyway, lol" while the rest of us are just out in the world, enjoying an occasional Star Wars movie or show as a nice distraction from the real world, where people have real problems.

Sounds good imo , it’s time to unshackle ourselves from the Skywalker Saga and move into the future so hopefully Starfighter is the first good step towards that!!.

Also did not realize Johnathan Tropper was writing the film , he has worked with Levy before on This Is Where I Leave You aswell as The Adam Project (which I thought was decent) but was also the creator & showrunner of Banshee , Warrior and Your Friends & Neighbors which have all been critically well received to varying extents so that’s a good sign imo.

Oh and regardless of how The Mandalorian & Grogu performs , I think it’s best that Filoni’s movie be turned into a miniseries since it’s already suppose to be a culmination of the Mandoverse thus far which have all been shows anyway!!.

That's Ryan Reynolds, Wilding.

I find your lack of Kenergy disturbing.

This news kinda bums me out. Was really hoping for the female in this to be Mara Jade and the kid being related to Luke. Have never appreciated how Disney treated the legacy characters from the original trilogy. I hate that the Skywalker Saga ended with all the Skywalker’s dead and a Palpatine being left.

@Huskers - I think there's still potential for Mara to be part of new canon. Have her be Luke's love interest before the destruction of his temple. Seeing what Kylo did, she flees with their child, thinking Luke dead. Luke comes to after the temple's destruction thinking Mara and his child are dead, fleshing out why he went into exile. Then she hears the story of Luke re-emerging to save the Resistance on Crait and seeks Rey out after the Final Order is defeated, feeling the galaxy is safe for her and Luke's child again.

@Huskers - Oddly enough, I wonder if distancing their selves from the Skywalker Saga is the best way to go now once Ahsoka wraps up. They were careless with the IP and the legacy stuff is in various stages of disarray for me. If they wanna do legacy still let it exist where it thrives currently, CW animation. I was kinda hoping Mara would show up too, but given what they did with "Ben" Solo...I'm good. Although Kylo Ren is still the best episode of Undercover Boss I've ever seen.

I still want that Ronin show though...sigh.

I think legacy characters can have a place in films, but I think they should not be used just as quick cameos. In fact, I believe the new Dune series - Dune Prophesy - should go all out and try to get the actors from David Lynch's film as well as the TV mini series to populate the new Dune world. Why not have Kyle McLaughlin play a senior ancestor of the current Paul Atreides. That kind of meta easter egg is the kind of thing that fans would enjoy.

LSHF - 1/27/2026, 6:37 PM
Using the Legacy Characters was always a gamble since there are far too many fans who had developed their own ideas of how these characters should behave. Even George's own ideas of his own characters wasn't accepted very well in his second trilogy of movies.

Its still pretty wild that KK placed out claiming that an apparently very tiny segment of the fan base caused the biggest franchise in the world to come near collapse in less than 10 years.

Man, nobody is giving a [frick] about Star Wars now.

Original fans are not going to get hyped about some bullshit post sequel retardation and the DEI crew that watched the D+ dogshit aren't a large enough audience to keep this dead horse out there to be beaten.

The lighting in a bottle lucky strike of Mando S1 is LONG GONE:

"Kennedy said they had built an audience for the film through the success of The Mandalorian on Disney+ and she believed young audiences would consider the film to be "their Star Wars" and not feel pressure to watch the entire franchise to see this entry."

I'd like to see an animated Star Wars series where Luke is the main protagonist. During the party on the moon of Endor, two Inquisitors, disguised as stealthy ninjas, descend on the moon and try to kill Luke and Leia. One of the Inquisitors is "the Emperor's Hand."

@Repian - This is like the number one thing I want from Star Wars. Give the gap between the OT and the ST the ol' Clone Wars treatment. Tell the stories Lucas should have been telling in the 90s instead of counting merch cash until people stopped buying toys and he had to make more movies, or in the decade he spent sulking about how people were mean about the prequels sucking shit until he finally sold it all.

They should have the new Star Wars be headlined by a Gusto and Nomis movie where they hang around in front of a convenience store on a jedi planet where they drink, get high, play with fake light sabers, and talk about banging chicks and other stupid stuff.

I won't watch this movie.

I will watch The Mandalorian and Grogu, but only because i like the characters and Jon Favreau is a great director.

Ryan Gosling is hit or miss for me, Barbie was the first time in years that i liked him, the Unknown Stuntman movie was ass.

Is there a reason they steer clear of animated projects within the OG series? Honestly...Thought they would love playing with Luke, Leia and Han.
