STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Star John Boyega Hoping For A Longer Fight Scene In Episode IX

PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING's John Boyega has been talking about his less than stellar confrontation with Phasma in THE LAST JEDI and what he hopes he gets to do in the upcoming EPISODE IX.

One of the more divisive aspects of last years The Last Jedi, was the handling of John Boyega's Finn in the Star Wars the sequel. While most of those criticisms are leveled against the Canto Bight subplot that saw his character and Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico seeking out a splicer on a casino planet populated by war profiteers, many also noted the rather lackluster re-match between him and Captain Phasma.

The  fans are not alone in that feeling however, as the Attack the Block actor has been talking to IGN about that latter fact and it appears that he was disappointed in it as well:

Yeah, man, I didn't expect it to be that quick if I'm being honest with you. I was like, wait, what? He's been like ramped up for a big fight and then it was over in a second. [laughs] But, hopefully, Finn gets to face someone else or has a fight that's much longer in Episode 9.

It remains to be seen whether Gwendoline Christie's Phasma will return in the upcoming JJ Abrams directed Episode IX or indeed what role Finn will have now that both he and Rey are reunited alongside Resistance fighters Poe Dameron and Rose Tico but here's hoping that Boyega gets a more hands on confrontation for the final go around.

What do you think? Were you let down by the Finn vs Phasma fight? Would you like to see her appear again in Episode IX? What are your hopes for Finn in the final entry? Leave your thoughts below.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m just hoping for another pointless mission for Finn!

It seems like not even the cast was jappy with this film. They're just too polite to admit it.

As someone who didn't really like the movie, I thought every story decision that Johnson made about Finn was absolutely terrible. He was my favorite character in the Force Awakens, and in the Last Jedi, I couldn't wait until his scenes were over.

Finn's treatment in TLJ is borderline racist. If Star Wars wanted to do something really different, they should have made both Rey and Finn have Force powers. Finn had some decent character development in TFA, but in TLJ it all just got reset and he became the cowardly comic relief that repeats the same cycle from the previous film. It's too bad, as they could have had Finn become a powerful Jedi as well and create another great African-American hero in the Star Wars pantheon. Such missed opportunities.

@DanJack - Hopefully after Black Panther’s success, that will encourage Disney and Lucasfilm to actually invest more in his character.

@LiteralSense90 - I wish that were the case. It's funny, after watching TFA, my wife and I talked about how refreshing it was to see two characters in a movie that actually seemed to like each other as opposed to the cliche Hollywood trope of chemistry supposedly only existing during conflict. Finn and Rose seemed like they would be such a nice couple, and back during TFA it seemed like we might get a Rey Skywalker too. We thought Rey and Finn could pass on the heroism to the next generation.

It's amazing to see how hard a franchise can fall in just one movie. I wish there was a time machine that could totally erase TLJ instead of TLJ that just erased the majority of the fan base. It makes me sad.

Captain Phasma. Another useless character to the "sequel" trilogy. *Sigh* You know, after Gwendoline Christie talked extensively about how they wanted her to be the next Boba Fett, gave Phasma an entire book to herself, and made the character into a badass in the comic book, I thought The Last Jedi was going to make up for how poorly this character was treated in The Force Awakens... And nope!

@Darkknight2149 - But don't you see...LITERALLY just like Fett. Only a couple lines of dialog..a tiny fight scene...She's got more screene time than Fett and more lines I think and still a movie to go. And just like Fett.. solo books, solo comic...tons of merch.

@gymbeau2000 -
Nope. Fett threatened Darth Vader to his face, was singled out in a room full of bounty hunters for disintegrating his victims, tracked down Han Solo, was a favourited and respected bounty hunter by both Jabba the Hutt and Darth Vader, ETC. He wasn't on-screen for very long, but it was screen time well spent (the only downside being his shitty death). His voice, mannerisms, and aurora of mystique was also one of the major factors that made him cool, something that the prequels and his excessive Expanded Universe backstory ruined. Another thing that makes him a fan favourite is that he isn't an evil dark lord or a mustache twirling villain; he was just a silent mercenary that only cares about getting paid. He's essentially the Star Wars equivalent of Deathstroke.

Captain Phasma yelled at Finn for taking his helmet off, got taken hostage VERY easily, and then got thrown down a garbage shoot. Then in the next movie, she got her ass handed to her by Finn... Again... And died.

Part 3
If you think that a ton of dialog and fight scenes are what it takes to make a character cool, that's on you. But one thing is for certain: Fett is waaaaay ahead of Phasma, regardless of how overrated you might see him as.

On a side note, I hate how this site won't let me post my full comment at once. I have to keep making changes and clicking the "Post Reply" button just to get it to work.

While he is hoping for a longer fight scene, I'm hoping for a retcon of Star Wars ala the time gate thing from Star Wars Rebels!
