TRON: LEGACY Star Garrett Hedlund Says "You Never Know" About Possible TRON 3 Return (Exclusive)

Talking to us about his role in The Tutor, Garrett Hedlund comments on whether he's likely to reprise his TRON: Legacy role alongside Morbius star Jared Leto in the upcoming TRON: Ares. Check it out...

In The Tutor, an in-demand tutor for the East Coast monied elite, Ethan (Garrett Hedlund) lands a high-paying assignment to instruct a billionaire’s son, Jackson (Noah Schnapp), at a remote New York waterfront estate. Almost immediately, Ethan realizes that his student’s interest in his life borders upon obsession.

As tension grows, Jackson’s accusations threaten to expose Ethan’s perceived dark secrets to his girlfriend (Victoria Justice) and the authorities.  As sentiment turns against Ethan, it is up to him, and only him, to unearth Jackson’s accusations and prove his innocence.

We recently spoke with Hedlund and Schnapp about their roles in the exciting new thriller from Vertical and took the opportunity to ask the latter about TRON 3. The actor played Samuel "Sam" Flynn in 2010's TRON: Legacy, though we learned earlier this year that Suicide Squad star Jared Leto is expected to lead Joachim Rønning's (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) TRON: Ares

There have been rumblings for years that Disney will enlist at least some of the last movie's actors, but when we asked Hedlund if he'll be in the next TRON movie, he chose his words carefully.

"Oh goodness, you know…you never know what the future holds," he responds in the video below.

Needless to say, this isn't the confirmation we were hoping for, but it's not exactly a denial either! Talks of a third movie have persisted for years, and after TRON: Legacy underperformed, it appeared the franchise might end there. Some time has now passed, though, and with a new TRON attraction about to open in Disney World, the studio is finally returning to The Grid.

Whether Hedlund will be part of that remains to be seen, but it would be a real shame for the Flynn family to be completely sidelined. Leto might also appreciate the backup, especially as his last starring effort - Morbius - was a critical and commercial flop.

Vertical's The Tutor is set to be released in theaters on March 24, 2023.

I know a few people who enjoyed Tron Legacy. I loved it. It had a great soundtrack, great VFX for it's time, and it definitely had a cohesive story while paying homage and respecting the film that came before. It's definitely the kind of movie I think that has a following years after it's release. Much like the original.

@SonOfAGif - I never saw the original, so I don't know how it stacks up to that. To me it really felt like it's own movie, something not all legacy sequels can achieve. Other than that though, I completely agree.

@SonOfAGif - I enjoyed it. While not a great actor, I find myself enjoying a lot of Garrett Hedlund's work.

@thewanderer - I think his acting in the movie was fine. He played a smug and arrogant teen who was disgruntled at what was happening to his father's company and I think he nailed it for the time period it was set in.

Like Tron Legacy a lot, including Hedlund. So, I much rather see Hedlund star in the next Tron movie than Leto (because Leto is a bore imo).

@bkmeijer1 - Leto can be great, but tends to not be in any big IP properties. Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyers Club, Lord of War, and American Psycho are enough for me to never count him completely out. I know around here a lot of us make fun of him for Suicide Squad and Morbius, and yes both of those are atrocious. But even recently he was good in House of Gucci and WeCrashed. I think he’s a good actor that is too full of himself and chooses some bad projects.

@mountainman - good point. He's good in those kind of projects, but I just don't think he's right for the more blockbuster kind of movies.

@bkmeijer1 - He was OK in Blade Runner. Not great, not terrible. But he did seem to go a bit too hard with the method acting in that one. The Tron series doesn’t set a very high bar when it comes to great acting performances so I’ll wait and see how he does in this. I’m hoping he plays a human and not a program as I think he’d overact in that role and could play it more straight in a human role.

@mountainman - he pretty much already played the program role in Blade Runner anyway. Think a human role would be better indeed

I didn't find the story in Legacy to be consistently engaging. Could have used tightening.

They need to give the show Tron Uprising another chance. It's the best thing in the Tron franchise

You definitely have to have Sam Flynn and Quorra back from the last movie. It wouldn't make any sense to just abandon their plot thread.

Daft Punk HAS to do the soundtrack...Un-retire their robot music making @$$es, Disney!

Cillian Murphy needs to return as well to flesh out some purpose to his cameo in Legacy, otherwise what's the point?!? RIP David Warner
