WESTWORLD Star James Marsden Describes The Show's Shocking Cancellation As A "Disappointment"

HBO decided to pull the plug on Westworld following low ratings for season 4, and star James Marsden has now shared his reaction to that, describing the decision from the cable network as "disappointing."

It's fair to say we were all shocked when news broke last year that HBO had decided to cancel Westworld after its fourth season. The show initially received widespread critical acclaim when it launched in 2016, though viewership steadily declined after the action moved from the theme park and the show bid farewell to the legendary Anthony Hopkins.

James Marsden was there from the start, and after taking a break from the series during its third season, he returned for the fourth (and final) batch of episodes. Talking to Rolling Stone (via SFFGazette.com), the Sonic the Hedgehog and X-Men star shared his thoughts on Westworld wrapping up before receiving a proper send-off.

"I’d be lying to you if I told you that the way we ended Westworld wasn’t a disappointment," Marsden said. "I’m never going to speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would have been nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish."

"I love this Westworld family. It was one of those unique opportunities to be part of something where I also would be sitting at home ravenously waiting for the next episode as a fan."

The actor would later acknowledge that appreciates decisions like this often come down to money, adding: "I totally understand it’s an expensive show, and big shows have to have big audiences to merit the expense. I just wish it was about more than financial success."

"But who knows - maybe there’s some world where it can get completed somehow. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted to."

As disappointed as everyone involved with Westworld appears to be over the cancellation, a quick look at ratings for season 4 makes it clear the show was running on fumes by the end. It's incredibly frustrating for fans and the creative team to not get a satisfying conclusion to a story they put so much into, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Had Warner Bros. Discovery not decided to scale back plans for HBO Max, Westworld may well have lived on in some form, but we don't anticipate ever getting to learn how this story ended, unfortunately.

Were you disappointed when Westworld reached its abrupt end?

So let me get this straight, you're covering a non cbm title, because he was in an X-Men movie right? Honestly I'd rather see more news like this on here, at least it's factual and worth commenting on lol. All I'm saying is less rumors and Twitter theories, and more news articles for 2023. Who's with me?!

The show got hella confusing, but i did rewatch the whole series when season 4 finished and i gota say i enjoyed it more. You could see the issues with the budget in season 4 as it seemed to scale things back a bit (Smallville style) with the repeat sets etc.

I was a bit dissapointed with how the story ended for the humans, but i was still hopeful to see things resolve in the sublmime. maybe someone will pick it up after WB/HBOMax seems to have sold it off to other streamers.

@UniqNo - I think how the story ended was pretty solid.

I secretly even hoped that before Season 4 premiered, the show would end with the Hosts ruling Earth and Westworld being the last human sanctuary.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah in regars to the humans and phyiscal host it was decent end. We kind of new they were doomed from the get go. but for those who managed to get across i would have like to see a bit more. Also i feel the way they let Thandiwe's character go out was lame.

@UniqNo - I kinda expected more of those two as well. Think they could've united those story lines to a more satisfying ending than the anti-climactic ones we got (or atleast, from what I remember they were anti-climactic)

Honestly, I think season 4 was a pretty good way to end the show with. Especially Caleb's story was pretty satisfyingly handled

I think he’d make for a great Hal Jordan

@campblood - that's actually a pretty cool choice.

Still kinda want Tom Cruise and Idris Elba as Hal and John, but I doubt that would ever happen. Marsden as Hal does sound more realistic

@marvel72 - It's about time that overused term is retired. So cringe.
