Who Is This Mysterious STAR TREK 2 Character?

During last night's telecast of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards there was a semi-humorous sketch that featured J.J. Abrams. What was interesting is that the monitor behind him revealed the first look at the Star Trek sequel.

While the frame remained mostly out of sight behind Abrams, the screen behind the director clearly shows a character with his or her face covered by some kind of mask, one that didn't appear anywhere in the previous "Star Trek" film. Since we don't have much context for the shot, it's difficult to say who might be under the mask, but from the looks of it, the character doesn't appear to be a member of Starfleet.

Star Trek 2 spoiler MTV Movie Awards

Most sites are reporting that this is most likely our first look at a Klingon. We do know that J.J. Abrams had included the Klingons in his 2009 Star Trek film, but left those scenes on the cutting room floor. Take a look below at one of those scenes and compare those Klingons with the figure from above. What do you think?

"Star Trek 2" stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho and Alice Eve. The film is expected to be in theaters May 17, 2013.

That does look a lot like a Predator mask in that blurred image.

I guess, when the Klingons run out of masks they turn to the Predators for some.

It's probably like, buy 10 Predator masks and get 5 five free or something. :P

@CCB1984 Nice, I wonder why those scenes were cut from the movie?

Did the Klingon ever wear masks in the old series or films? I don't recall ever seeing such.

@Gmoney: no, they put helmets on them to save the reveal of what the new series versions of Klingons would look like. Star Trek apparently wrote a reason into continuity for the appearance of Klingons going from just humans in face-paint in the original series to having ridged prosthetic foreheads in the movies and later series. Aabrams didn't want to lock himself into one choice or the other for the sake of a brief scene.

I think its a Klingon. IMO they wear the helmets out of shame. Some Romulans wore V-shaped helmets in the original series too, although I don't think that was out of shame.

It's a Helmeted Klingon! Loved the helmets in the deleted scens from the first, I hope we get to see them full on in this film.
