Daisy Ridley Debunks Fan Theory Regarding Rey's Parentage In STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

Rey's parentage in the Star Wars universe is still a mystery after the events of The Force Awakens, though speculation continues. Actress Daisy Ridley has now ruled out one fan theory...

Rian Johnson's untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII is just over a year away from release, but it hasn't stopped fans from speculating about one of the biggest unanswered questions from The Force Awakens: Just who are Rey's parents? Not much has been provided in terms of evidence, though theories have mainly focused on Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, or even Obi Wan Kenobi as candidates.

One of the more recent theories is that Jyn Erso, the protagonist of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, could actually be Rey's mother. In an interview with Vulture, Rey actress Daisy Ridley debunked the theory due to the gap in the character's ages. “I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is - Darth Vader is there - so she would ultimately be my great-grandma; no, she would be my grandma,” Ridley said, though she was quick to not dismiss the theory entirely. "I mean it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away."

Despite the lack of link between the two characters, Ridley said she is still very excited for Rogue One“I am just excited to see how it is, because I have heard it is so so different, and its own thing,” Ridley said. “I have no idea what happens – I know the ending, but I have no idea really what happens in it.”

As for finding out who Rey's parents really are, is it possible that Episode VIII will give us the answer? "We will see in a year," Ridley said cryptically. "Just sit tight on that question."

Star Wars: Episode VIII releases on December 15, 2017.

One of the things I hate about the Force Awakens is this J.J. Abrams mystery box shit. Don't dangle a twist in front of the audience for two years... If it's something people could guess, then they will guess it. If it's something they couldn't guess then it's not a good twist.

They should have just left it out of the movie entirely. Rey just lives on the planet and there are no flashbacks or hints or anything like that. Have her doing the cryptic day-counting, sure, but nothing else.

@Spock0Clock - Yeah the flashback was dumb. When Darth reveals he is Luke's father, there's no build up towards it. Straight surprise.

@Spock0Clock - I don't think it's a "twist" per se. The story is about the Skywalker dynasty, that much is clear. I don't think Rey is the daughter or granddaughter or whatever of Luke....that would be far too obvious. So, the question remains, what is her connection to Luke. She may not even have parents at the end of day. I'm liking the speculation, personally.

@Spock0Clock - I'm not sure I agree about the twist thing. I see where you're coming from, but I don't see the merit in including an obvious twist in a movie nowadays. Most of the plot tropes have been done and done again, so the best way for a twist to come about is shrouded in mystery for as long as they can hold it out without being dicks. Like, if they didn't tell us until Episode IX, then yeah, [frick] em. But they can't pull an "I'm your father" moment as easily as they could have in the 70s.

@MattBellissimo - I believe more fans are wondering who is Snoke vs. who is Rey. There will some twists for sure in all categories in believe.

@MattBellissimo - I have a feeling Rey has no connection to previous characters in the past star wars films. The Skywalker story is mainly between Kylo, Luke and Leia. Rey is more the Obi Wan kind of character, part of the Skywalker story.

I thought it was confirmed that she is the reincarnation of Anakin and that a new "chosen one" is born with no father whenever the old one dies. But I guess not.

@nibs - Just another theory

@MattBellissimo - I thought it came from a semi-legit source and it makes sense, Disney could do trilogies forever with this. But yeah, prob just a theory.

@nibs - Oh i don't disagree....that's been my theory since I saw the movie, and then I believe Josh reported on the rumour of it being true from a decently credible source. I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

I believe it was Felicity that said it before; people should quit jumping to conclusions just because two females exist in the same universe with brown hair. It's a fun theory, but it's poorly constructed.

Rogue One will just be a Star Wars movie with no Jedi pretty much. So it will almost be a similar but new Sci Fi movie.

Didnt the jyn erso actress already debunk this theory?

They should just let people keep making these theory's and in the next instalment it turns out her dad is just Brian from Tattooine.

Or just to piss everyone of make her Lando's daughter.

@SimplyAz - No way they'll make Rey and Finn brother and sister like they dos with Luke and Leia
