Kevin Feige Talks About The SPIDER-MAN Reboot's John Hughes Vibe; Teases New Villains

Are you a fan of The Breakfast Club? Good, then you're going to love what Kevin Feige has planned for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man reboot! Feige recently praised the strength of Spidey's supporting cast (including his villains) and teased some new rogues down the line...

Similar to how Ant-Man was inspired by heist movies, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier drew from political thrillers, Kevin Feige has often claimed that John Hughes' body of work will serve as inspiration for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Speaking to Devin Faraci of Birth Movies Death, Marvel's head honcho insisted that the Jon Watts-directed feature would carve its own identity, by drawing upon the strength of Spidey's supporting characters.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting. Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie - only John Hughes could - but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

Fans less happy about the movie's high school setting can at least get excited about the prospect of seeing some new rogues on the big screen for the first time. Quizzed by Faraci over the identity of the movie's villains, Feige called Spider-Man's deep roster of enemies an "advantage", and simply responded, "Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before.”

He was also asked about the possibility of a Spider-Man/Netflix team-up down the line. A street-level hero at heart, many fans believe it would be a missed opportunity if Marvel's Spider-Man never got the chance to work alongside the likes of Daredevil in any of the Defenders TV shows. “My general answer to that is never say never,” Feige replied. “But our current Sony deal is very specific - we’re producing the standalone film, with a certain amount of back and forth allowed.”

What are your thoughts on what Feige had to say? Both of the previous takes on Spider-Man arguably glossed over the high school aspect of the character, are you excited to see it featured once again? Who would you like to see as the new villain? Leave your thoughts below!
