SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Writer Talks Cutting Great Character Interactions And Avoiding Lazy Fan-Service

Spider-Man: No Way Home writer Erik Sommers talks about the fine line between cheap fan-service and delivering moments fans would want, explaining why they scrapped great scenes to focus on Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: No Way Home celebrates two decades of the wall-crawler's big screen adventures in a way that's seen the movie exceed expectations both critically and commercially. Fans are going crazy over the threequel, and there are a lot of amazing moments that ensured they walked away happy once the credits rolled (that swing and Norman Osborn's "I'm something of a scientist myself" line).

Part of the reason these moments work so well is that the movie never really heads down the route of lazy fan-service, and the scenes which do re-use familiar dialogue or reference past events never feel forced.

Talking to Discussing Film, Spider-Man: No Way Home co-writer Erik Sommers explained why Peter Parker's story always had to be the priority. "I mean, you want to give everyone their due, and just as a fan, you want to see those people as those characters and have fun with them," he explains. "But at the end of the day, it’s a Spider-Man movie – you have to be telling the story of Peter Parker, and everything has to be in service of that. So there were a lot of painful decisions made, you know, we would have loved to have done this and that and “Oh, wouldn’t be great if these two villains could do this!” But it has to be in service of Peter’s journey, and you have to keep things moving."

"I mean, it’s a balancing act because we love those previous movies, the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb ones, and we want to pay homage to them and make the fans happy. But you don’t want to just do lazy fan service for its own sake because it’ll ring false at some point," Sommers continued.

"It’s a balancing act and at every point, again, you have to be thinking about the story. So if you really want to hear this villain say the line that he said in that other movie, you can’t let that drive you in terms of finding a moment for that. If you just go looking for that and you spend all this time, you’re going to end up writing some scene that maybe doesn’t even need to be in the movie."

This is definitely the right approach to "fan-service," and the proof is in the pudding with Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie has really managed to strike a chord with hardcore fans and regular moviegoers alike, hence why it's become the first title since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to earn upwards of $1 billion at the worldwide box office (we expect updated numbers later).

Have lotta issues with the movie but when it comes to this? They mostly nailed it, man.

Otto Octavius : [Holding an Arc Reactor] The power of the sun...

Peter Parker : ...in the palm of your hand.

Otto Octavius : Peter?

Peter Parker : [Peter unmasks] Otto.

Otto Octavius : Oh, it's good to see you, dear boy.

Peter Parker : It's good to see you.

Otto Octavius : You're all grown up.

[chuckles]

Otto Octavius : How are you?

Peter Parker : [smiling] Trying to do better.

This was me:

ALL THAT TIME.

So sweet, so wholesome, so...full of SOUL. :')

@Doomsday8888 - They even played the classic Responsibility theme on the background that scene. It was just perfect.

@Reeds2Much - Genuinely one of the most cathartic and affecting moments I’ve felt as a film goer. No doubt helped by the fact that I’ve watched him fail over and over again to save Gwen for like 7 years thinking he’d never get any sort of redemption.

I'm really curious to see what Tom Rothman is planning, considering the deal they made in 2019 contemplates only ONE more movie (probably 4F).

"the movie never really heads down the route of lazy fan-service"

The only reason most people are loving this movie so much is because of nostalgia and fan-service, without that you are left with just really bad and lazy writing. 🤷
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/26/2021, 9:08 AM
@SethBullock - While people are paying tickets for nostalgia an fanservice (I know I did) there is a surprising good story behind of all, probably the best Spiderman live action story in 14 years.
Odin
Odin - 12/26/2021, 9:17 AM
@SethBullock - If they had done this movie without legacy actors, people would've still liked it. Let's say that appearing villains had been Doc Ock played by Jared Harris, Green Goblin by Mark Hamill etc. And instead of two other Peters there would've been Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, the story would've still worked and people would've gotten hyped. Many would probably wonder why the studio didn't take the opportunity to bring back the previous actors, but none the less it still would've worked. The callbacks were sure a nice touch that among all the other factors affected the way people perceive this movie, but to say that this movie is only liked because of nostalgia and fan-service is just untrue.

@SethBullock - really can't agree with that. Only area of lazy writing is a bit of a convoluted explanation to get the plot working (also how the solution to rehabilitating the villains is to simply whip up a cure for their powers). Other than that it serves its function as a fun blockbuster with some emotional moments.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Just curious what you thought was bad a lazy writing?
I loved the movie, but trying to cure them was ridiculous. Like, why doesn't Peter cure himself? And if it's so easy to cure them then why doesn't some bad guy hit Peter with an antidote and take away his powers?
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/26/2021, 4:00 PM
@TheWarThor - Why were Max and Eddie transported to the MCU when neither of them knew Peter Parker is Spiderman?
Why Flint keeps changing his mind every 5 minutes, to the point of contradicting himself? he went from feeling guilty for murdering uncle Ben, to taking part in the murder of aunt May, and all he had to say was "I DONT CARE".
Dr Strange gets conveniently removed from the movie for the entire second act (why the way, Peter beat him? and in the mirror dimension???), and part of the third.
Ned now knows magic (doing "tricks" we were shown in the first Dr Strange movie were really hard to learn).
Tobey gets stabbed for absolute no reason.
Dr Strange is not only ok with letting two random teenagers go after four super powered villains from another universes, he actually ENCOURAGE them to do so.

Just to name a few cases of lazy writting, I'm sure there are more...still better than Endgame, though.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/26/2021, 9:07 AM
While the script wasnt very good (but was still competent, especially considering they had to balance 3 Spiderman, 5 villains, Dr Strange, and Peter's friends), they handled the fanservice pretty well, something that isnt easy at all, just look at Episode IX or Matrix 4.

There was some cheap fanservice in the first half of the movie, but cheap doesnt necesarily mean bad...I was surprised not only when this happened, but even more surprised to see how a lot of people besides me laughted and clapped at this

Himura - 12/26/2021, 4:27 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I love this line so much because of memes that I didnt mind them having it in the movie. Like, we know they had him say it for the meme and not just a callback lmao

But they didnt overdo it either so having this one line was just enough. There have been way more cringey lines said in past MCU films. Specifically the "what are THOSEEEE" line in BP.

"We love those previous movies, the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb ones"

I dunno, they were subtle enough about it to not make any of the fans mad, but they were pretty clearly mocking the TASM movies more than the other ones. Making more than one jab at how ridicilous Electro's origin was, how lame the Lizard was and Garfield kept having those self-awere lines of being the least liked Spider-Man.
Odin
Odin - 12/26/2021, 9:24 AM
@FinnishDude - That could've just been them reflecting and pointing out the fandom's common reaction to TASM movies in the past. On a personal note, the villains in TASM movies were generally handled so bad, especially Electro, that softly rebooting him here was just common sense. And Lizard was the most unnecessary character in the whole NWH film. They might've just as well cut him from the film and it would've affected nothing. We barely got one proper scene with him anyway.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 12/26/2021, 9:39 AM
@FinnishDude - Seriously, they kept trashing how terrible Electro's design was, how stupid the Lizard's plan was, and poor Garfield kept mentioning how he was was the lamest Spiderman...
I mean, if you are doing fanservice, that includes dissing what fans disliked, and I know fans are now pretending they liked the Amazing movies, but they didnt.

@Odin - People keep talking about Andrew's redemption, but what about Jamie's redemption? I dont want a solo movie about him, but I hope he comes back for the Sinester Six movie, he was a lot of fun to watch.

The movie had just the right amount of fan service. I hop we get the rest of them in deleted scenes.

I absolutely love that one of the the movie’s thesises (theses?) is that all of the Marvel movies we’ve seen are canon, for better or for worse.

That's one of the many reasons I loved this movie so much. It had service and nostalgia, but it wasn't JUST for that. It served a greater purpose for Holland's Peter/Spidey's arc and moving forward, and got closure for the other two...especially Garfield.

Just..

I think Andrew saving MJ was lazy fan service. Feels more like fan fiction opposed to professional storytelling. I get the parallels, but the rule of parallels is to match it in everything except the result. Which means it had to be Andrew’s love interest. I just think there’s an emotional beat to match and they went a few beats lower. Possibly because they believed this was their last chance to do so. Most people love it though so who cares.

uhhhh, yea, there's lazy writing in this. There's some cringe aswell. That scene where Tobey starts talking about uncle Ben and then Andrew basically interrupts him and takes over the moment with his story of uncle ben only to go back to Tobey was such a weird way of doing a scene. The fx are some what lazy too. I blame Sony. Tom's Spiderman movies have the worse cgi of the 3 eras.

The callbacks to previous films was great. I really liked when a mentally stable Ock reunited with Tobey's Spider-Man. Their dialogue in that moment was just perfect.
