SPIDER-MAN 4 Story Details Reveal Sam Raimi's Plans For The Vulture, Mysterio, Stilt-Man, And More

Some new Spider-Man 4 story details have been revealed, and we now have new intel on Sam Raimi's original plans for The Vulture, and classic villains like Shocker, Mysterio, and the sinister...Stilt-Man?!

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 fell apart for a variety of reasons and was ultimately replaced by 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. The plan had been for John Malkovich to play The Vulture, with Anne Hathaway set to star as Black Cat (though there had been somewhat bizarre rumblings about her being Adrian Toomes' daughter and suiting up as "Vulturess").

Following Tobey Maguire's return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are hoping Raimi - who helmed this year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - could one day make the movie.

Talking in new book, Great Power: How Spider-Man Conquered Hollywood During The Golden Age of Blockbusters, storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson shed some light on original plans for Spider-Man 4. He explained that The Vulture was a government contractor who did all manner of dirty jobs on their behalf.

As for where the name came from, it would have been because "he didn't leave anything but bones behind" after his jobs.

To drive home what a formidable villain Toomes was, it's said that we'd have seen him beat Spider-Man to the point of near death, making him fiercer than both the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus.

However, it wouldn't have all been doom and gloom. "We were going to open the movie with this montage of all the villains we knew that Sam would never be able to use in Spider-Man movies," Henderson explains. "Because Peter, now that MJ has gone, he has finally made peace, and he loves being Spider-Man. He's actually enjoying it."

"So we were going to try to do The Shocker, Mysterio, Stilt-Man, and that kind of stuff."

We're not sure what happened to Mary Jane Watson, though it's safe to assume things didn't work out for them after Spider-Man 3. It would have been a blast seeing all those B-List bad guys in action, though Spider-Man: Far From Home made it clear that Quentin Beck had the potential to be more than just a throwaway villain.

Would you guys like to see this version of Spider-Man 4 revisited in some way?

I can totally see that montage happening, especially after Spider-Man 2 where we see a montage of Peter’s life not being Spidey. Perfect opening

Man this movie sounded awesome, damn shame that we'll probably never get to see it smh.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - I mean, it did fell apart because Raimi couldn't get the story to work. Sure, in fairness, some of that is the combination of the studio again pushing for more than one villain and the deadline being unmovable, but at the same time I can't help, but to think that there were probably plenty of problems with all the script treatments, if Raimi wasn't willing to move forward with any of them.

Probably would have still been better than both TASM movies.

@FinnishDude - There's a lot of rumors at the time that made me happy not to see it, if true. The guy makes a comment about MJ having left Peter before the montage opening the film, but I wonder if he is mixing things up.

Something to remember about Raimi's films is that the escalation for personal problems in Peter’s life gets more extreme each film. According to the leaks at the time (which included a montage of old villains and other things we know now), Peter was supposed to be married to MJ with a kid, cheat on her with Felicia and have sex, and MJ would divorce Peter and take him to court to prevent him from having custody of their kid.

Like... Christ. I get that Peter has to have life shit on him, but that isn't what I personally wanna see in a Spider-Man film. If true, I totally get why Raimi said the story never worked.

@abd00bie - Yup no difference to what they are doing with the gender swapping.

Annoying isn't it.

@marvel72 - ...it wasn't gender swapping though. Vulture was gonna be the main villain and Felicia hardy was basically the same character she is in the comics. They just gave her a new identity to tie her story into vulture.

@marvel72 - What gender swapping?

TCronson
TCronson - 11/6/2022, 9:27 AM
@AC1 - nope, it literally didn't. We got 3 cynical piece of shit movies with Tom Holland directed by a tool without skill or vision that related to its source material in name only. Plus even worse Spidey-related stufff like Morbius and Venom features. It's probably near the worst fate live-action Spider-Man could ever get.

@TCronson - It's not even close to being in the vicinity of the worst fate live-action Spider-Man could ever get. Remember TASM2 ? I'd forgive you if you don't, most people tried to erease it from their memories...

spider-man 2 is probably my favorite marvel film ever, but idk how this would have gone. i feel like tobey just phoned it in for spider-man 3, & his performance in nwh wasn't great either, so i get the sense that he might have been checked out for this.
