CATWOMAN: HUNTED Writer Greg Weisman Responds To SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN Fan Support (Exclusive)

Greg Weisman's Spectacular Spider-Man is widely hailed as the web-slinger's greatest TV series, but how does it feel to see the show still receive that outpouring of love? Here's what the writer told us...

The Spectacular Spider-Man debuted in 2008 and ended its run on Disney XD (after originally premiering on The CW) just one year later. Despite lasting for only 26 episodes, the series has become a beloved classic among fans and is frequently named among the best animated TV shows of all time.

Fans have never given up hope for a revival, and right before the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home last month, the show was once again trending on social media. For a multitude of reasons, the chances of The Spectacular Spider-Man coming back are extremely slim. Marvel Studios is also in the midst of developing Spider-Man: Freshman Year for Disney+, so the chances seem very slim.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with writer Greg Weisman to discuss his work on Catwoman: Hunted. As you might expect, we had to ask the mastermind behind the popular Spider-Man series what it means to him to see the show trending as fans express their love for the show.

"Well, it’s very gratifying that the fans love it," he responded. "We’re getting off-topic here, but it’s not that I wouldn’t want to do it again. Just to clarify, I would love to do it again. I just don’t understand any path to that. I don’t see it. I’d love to be wrong, but I just don’t see it. We loved working on that show. We had a blast, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about [Laughs]."

It's unfortunate that the door appears to be closed on The Spectacular Spider-Man, but it's not Weisman's decision, and if it was going to come back, it probably would have by now. A comic book continuation or something along those lines would no doubt be welcomed by fans, but we're not banking on it. Stranger things have happened, though, and you never know what Marvel and Sony might decide to do.

You'll find our full Catwoman: Hunted interview with Greg on Monday or, if you can't wait, right here.

Catwoman: Hunted is set for release on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and Digital on February 8, 2022.

Give me the 90’s Spider-Man animated series, like X-Men ‘97, or BTAS.

@MuadDib - spiderman for sure needs something, a lot more than x men. X men had a fine finale. Spiderman left so much hanging

@dracula - The only major thing Spider-Man left hanging was the reunion with MJ.

Anyways he is busy with Young Justice if it is ever a possibility, better to let young justice run its course rather than potentially hurt both show’s quality by splitting his time

Y'all don't think with how much demand there was for this, a revival if it were legally viable would've happened by now?

@MCUKnight11 - The thing is, I don't think there is quite enough demand for anyone with power to give the logistics real consideration. Within the fan community it might feel like "everyone" wants the show back, but we've gotta realize how niche we are in the grand scheme of things. Unfortunately, most adults don't give this kind of animation a chance and no one under the age of 13 was even alive while the show was on. That's not a recipe for mass appeal.

I need MCU to recreate this scene (with Holland)

Honestly I think the 90s animated series has a better chance to be revived than this.

@MCUKnight11 - well yeah because they dont have all the legal issues

@MCUKnight11 - If nothing else, it’s about time the ‘94 series got a complete series home video release—just look at how long it took for X-Men and the 90’s Iron Man to get that!

Anyway Spectacular SM is one thing, Earth Mightiest Heroes another.

In order for the decision-makers to want to jump through the necessary hoops to make this happen, it has to promise a worthwhile return on investment. Right now, as much love as the show has, it's still just a cult classic show.

I think for there to be any chance of a revival (even in comic form) the show needs to have a second life that expands the audience. With proper positioning and some fan generated hype, bringing the first two seasons could help the series similarly to how returning to Netflix gave Avatar the Last Airbender a second life (though I wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that scale). With demonstrated interest in streaming numbers and broader demand for more, maybe someone important will feel there's a reason to see what can be done.

@Superheromoviefan - That's mostly Jeph Loeb's fault. It really was a terrible choice to put a man who thinks Animation is exclusively for eight-year olds in charge of that department.

Greatest adaptation of Spider-Man. I would love if they got Greg Weisman as writer for the new Spider-Man MCU trilogy.

Best adaptation of the Spider-Man mythos hands down.

It truly is a shame that it came out when it did though, That had a lot to do with why it didn't get a third season. At this point, All we can do is hope that the upcoming new Spider-Man show from Disney+ is at least half decent.

This show successfully portrayed Peter's high school life, Gwen and MJ co-existing, Flash Thompson becoming Peter's friend, the Sinister Six forming, the Venom symbiote, etc. It's crazy good.
