After Nearly 20 Years, Marvel May Finally Allow Spider-Man To Get Back Together With Mary Jane For Good

After almost two decades since Peter Parker and Mary Jane sold their marriage to Mephisto, the two characters may finally be allowed to get back together in a meaningful way.

Folks, for those of us who believe in the power of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's love, there is a possibility that our years-long prayers have been answered. Peter and MJ are, without a doubt, one of the most beloved couples in all of comics. Unfortunately, they've had a... shall we say, rocky relationship. They got married in the '80s, in an issue that went down as one of the most talked about in the history of comics. Following years of them together, Marvel Comics decided it was time to break up their marriage, in an effort to make Peter remain young-feeling for readers.

Thus, the One More Day storyline was born. In it, knowing how desperate Peter was to save Aunt May's life after she was shot during the events of Civil War, Mephisto offered the Wall-Crawler a deal: Give up his marriage with MJ, and he would restore May to full health. After a tearful goodbye, the two lovebirds parted ways, and so, Mephisto reshaped reality to make it as though they never married, instead ending their relationship on bad terms. The story was published in 2007, and the characters' marriage has not been restored since. Though they've been on-and-off throughout the years, Marvel has steered clear from fully embracing their relationship.

Now, however, there might be hope, because two prominent Marvel artists have seemingly hinted at the House of Ideas finally reuniting one of comics' most amazing couples. Cover artist Taurin Clarke (Sam Wilson, Captain America, Deadpool (2024)) shared on Instagram a variant cover he drew for Amazing Spider-Man #23, scheduled for release in March 2026. The cover features Mary Jane and Peter sharing a passionate kiss in front of a Spidey-themed heart, with the Venom symbiote next to them, doing their best not to puke:

The artist said the following about his cover: "My variant to AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #23 has been announced! In stores March 2026. Always great drawing Pete, but this is my first time drawing MJ and it was a blast. Really fun cover." While the theme of the image can be attributed to Valentine's Day, the comic will come out the month after February. In theory, that could be due to scheduling. Alternatively, it could also simply be a fun variant cover. Having said that, it might also point to something bigger coming for the two beloved characters.

Shortly after Clarke's post, Carlos Gomez, the artist for Venom (2025)—which focuses on MJ as the symbiote's host—shared a "Feliz Navidad" (Spanish for "Merry Christmas") video on Instagram. The video chronicled Mary Jane's long-awaited breakup with her controversial ex-boyfriend, Paul. It ended with a panel from 2019's Amazing Mary Jane #1, showing MJ having a "20-second dance party" with Peter Parker, with him responding: "Ugh. I miss you so much."

In the caption, seemingly referring to MJ and Paul's breakup, the artist stated fans had received an early Christmas surprise, and teased another one coming soon: "MERRY CHRISTMAS & FELIZ NAVIDAD! Let's not forget we had an early Christmas present this year! And next year we're having another BIG one." Given the video's subject matter, Gomez could be teasing a big reunion for Peter and Mary Jane.

With that established, there's another vital piece of evidence that could tie all of this together: Radioactive Spider-Man. The series takes place in the Age of Revelation future, 10 years after a mutant virus killed many people and turned many others into mutants. In a flashback set during the initial outbreak in issue #2, Peter is established as being with MJ, given that she's the first person he calls to know if she and Aunt May are okay, hinting at them living together. MJ is ultimately killed, and years later, Aunt May tells Peter he remembers cooking for him and Mary Jane, confirming they were, in fact, a couple.

This matters because Age of Revelation's future is meant to be 616 canon, meaning all mainline Marvel stories are leading up to that tragic event. Regardless of the possibility that our heroes will find some way to stop the impending scenario from materializing, the story proves that, as of now, Mary Jane and Peter are fated to get back together in the 616 world.

The artists' aforementioned teases may be pointing to their much-anticipated romantic reunion happening fairly soon. As mentioned, they have dated a few times over the years, but never in a way that's lasted. Assuming Gomez's Instagram tease relates to their relationship, perhaps Marvel will finally allow them to get back and, most importantly, stay together for the long term.

If handled to its fullest potential, Peter and Mary Jane's relationship could be the biggest highlight of the Spider-Man universe, as proven by the modern take on Ultimate Spider-Man. The comic portrays the duo as a married couple with two children, and their dynamic is, to put it plainly, perfect. Peter is likely one of Marvel's most relatable heroes for younger readers, yes, but being married—or at least getting back together—with whom has been established as his soulmate multiple times will not change that.

Mary Jane has embraced her role as a superhero in recent years, and seeing her in a relationship with Peter, while being on the same playing field as him in terms of superhuman abilities/extracurricular activities (i.e., crime-fighting) would be a welcomed addition to her mythology.

Amazing Spider-Man #23 hits stores in March 2026.

What do you make of these apparent hints? Do you think Peter and Mary Jane will finally get back together? Share your thoughts in the comments!

@0bstreperous - Everything, or mostly everything, that's been released since 2010/2011 has been shit, so stick to comics released in the prior decades.

@TheJok3r - I'm talking about Marvel and DC; other companies have done a good job filling in the gaps left by those two.

@0bstreperous - DC's awesome right now. And Marvel's Ultimate line. Also Brian K Vaughn's Saga (get caught up before the end)

Historically, Moore, Miller, Morrison, Will Eisner, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Art Speigelman, Francoise Malloy, Robert Crumb, Gaiman, Wally Wood, Mike Mignola, Joe Sacco, the Hernandez brothers, Paul Pope, Sophie Campbell, Masamune Shirow,... you know what? It's kind of a loaded question, this answer could go on forever.

But yeah if we're just talking current stuff then DC's All in, Marvel's Ultimate Universe, IDW's TMNT and the Hasbro Energon universe are probably the best mainstream franchises to get into atm.

With amazing Spider-Man issue 1000 coming out soon the only thing they could do that is worthy of that comic is get Mary Jane and Peter to undo one more day. If they don't do it then then they will miss their perfect opportunity and there is a part of me that thinks that's what's going to happen to draw readers in.
