SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Swings To An Amazing $22.2M Opening Day In China; On Track For $70M-$75M Weekend
Spider-Man: Homecoming has finally opened in China and as expected, it's performing spectacularly. In just one day, the Tom Holland-starrer has taken in $22.2 million and is on pace for a massive weekend!
Never underestimate the power of Spider-Man.
The wall-crawler's most recent reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming, finally opened in China yesterday and is off to a pretty spectacular start. The Jon Watts-directed feature brought in just over $22.2 million on Friday and is now on pace for a pretty massive $70M-$75M weekend, which would propel the picture, which has earned $747.9 million to date, past $800 million worldwide - the seventh film this year to hit that impressive mark.
The film's opening day is the third highest in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, just behind Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Forbes predicts that if Homecoming performs similarly to recent MCU outings, it could earn somewhere between $125M to $150M, possibly more, in the Middle Kingdom, which might result in it becoming the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, topping the current leader, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.3M).
At the moment, it's projected to finish its box office run with just around $880 million worldwide, which would put it well past 2002's Spider-Man ($821M) and 2004's Spider-Man 2 ($784M), but just under Spider-Man 3 ($891M), although that's subject to change if Homecoming performs even better than expected in China, meaning $900M+ may be in range.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
