Insomniac Games Celebrates SPIDER-MAN 2 Sales Milestone As Game Of The Year Discussion Ramps Up

After only needing 24 hours to become the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in Sony's history, Insomniac Games' Spider-Man 2 is still selling like crazy.

Spider-Man 2, developed by Insomniac Games, sold over 2.5 million copies in just a day, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation original video game ever.

Just eleven days later, the game's sales figures surpassed 5 million copies sold. Insomniac Games took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the news with PlayStation 5 owners.

Taking into account that Spider-Man 2 is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, these sales figures are quite an accomplishment. God of War: Ragnarok, the second-best-selling title on the list of the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios titles, was available for both the PS4 and PS5.

With impressive sales numbers in tow, PlayStation fans are now beginning to debate whether Spider-Man 2 is the game of the year.

It faces some steep competition from the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate 3, Final Fantasy XVI, Lies of Pi, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Remnant 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

There's also Super Mario RPG on the horizon which could be a late-emerging contender.

Several game awards shows dish out a game of the year honor including The Game Awards, Game Developers Choice Awards, D.I.C.E. Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards. Last year, Elden Ring took home the prize at all 4 events.

When looking back at the fact that Sony purchased Insomniac Games in 2019 for the tidy sum of $229 million, it was quite the steal. If we look at the number of copies sold and apply that to the lowest, base price for Spider-Man 2, that still sees Sony grossing over $350 million in revenue and counting.

Spider-Man 2 is a direct sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man (released in 2018) and 2020's Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and it was released on October 20, 2023 for the PS5.

The game features Peter Parker and Miles Morales as the two playable characters, who will team up to face a new threat: Venom. Other villains that have been confirmed to appear in the game include Kraven the Hunter, The Lizard, Sandman, Black Cat, and more.

When it was released in 2018, the first Spider-Man game received positive reviews from critics as the gameplay, aesthetics, plot, and characterizations all received high marks. Based on 120 reviews, the game had an overall Metacritic score of 91%.

The sequel also currently has an overall Metacritic score of 91% from 130 reviews.

OFFICAL SYNOPSIS: The Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, enter new chapters in their lives as they balance their responsibilities as protectors of Marvel’s New York. As Harry Osborn, Peter’s best friend, returns into his life, and Miles looks to build his future beyond high school, the relationship between our heroes is tested and strained as the Symbiote appears to threaten them, the city, and the ones they love.

Developed by Insomniac Games in collaboration with Marvel Games and PlayStation, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 continues the saga of the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise.

@CoHost - I would go with Alan Wake 2, but BG3 just has that Game of the Year feeling about it. It's like when you see a drama movie based on some important historical figure, you know that it'll be an Oscar favorite.

Had lotta fun but damn man, i won every trophy and finished everything in less than a week and i even took my sweet ass time...kinda forgot the game now, which is not super nice considering what you pay, now i'm waiting for the updates with New Game+ and hopefully they will announce some erm...free (heh) DLCs?

I am looking forward to playing it, in a few years when it is on PC. Baldur's Gate is what deserves it to me, incredible story and I feel like I can replay the game a dozen times and still be hitting new content.

I haven't even played BG3, and I already know that game has way more content than SM2, and is almost universally praised. No way SM2 wins, unless they litterally pay to win. I liked SM2, but it's so lackluster. Once you've finished the main story, all you can do is either fight random crimes or do the Mysteriums over again, but only with Miles. The enemy bases from the first game are sorely missing.
