SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Scrapped One Spidey Variant Due To Legal Issues With DC Comics

Amalgam Comics' Spider-Boy was a combination of Spider-Man and Superboy, but one of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's character designers has now confirmed he was cut from the recently released sequel.

As sales plummeted, both Marvel and DC were struggling to stay afloat in the 90s. Marvel Comics even faced bankruptcy at one point, and the publishers eventually agreed to embark on a crossover with 1996's Marvel Versus DC.

The "Amalgam Comics" event mashed characters together from both words to create new heroes and villains. In that reality, Peter Parker was a scientist at Project Cadmus who, while attempting to create a Super Soldier, was killed in an explosion when his clone woke up.

General Thunderbolt Ross discovered the boy and subsequently adopted him, naming the teenager Peter Ross. However, when "Uncle Gen" was killed by a mugger, this part-Spider-Man, part-Superboy hybrid became the hero known as Spider-Boy.

Now, it's been revealed (via Toonado.com) that this web-slinger was among the many Spider-Man Variants considered for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Spider-Society scenes. However, as character designer Kris Anka explains, legal issues with DC Comics made this an impossibility.

We're shocked there was no way to sneak Spider-Boy into the sequel, but it probably wasn't worth the legal headache which would inevitably follow. A blurry look at this scrapped web-slinger can be seen below.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The movie stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Oscar Isaac.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse arrives on Digital on August 8 and hits Blu-ray on September 5.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I can't believe they can be stupid enough to retcon all his scenes just for a shit TV show.

They can easily change that.
If they're that stupid, that means armor wars is DOA.

Always love a mention of the Amalgam universe, even if it was a blink-and-you'd-miss-it cameo like this.

Deadpool can name-drop Batman, but Sony couldnt get away with this?

@TheHumanSpider2 - Featuring a character that's owned by a different company infringes on copyright, but mentioning one doesn't for some reason. But you can feature a character if it falls under parody.

They talk about DC characters in Marvel movies a lot for some reason, Eternals did it, the Raimi Spiderman movies, etc.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Deadpool name drop Batman ? Probably misses it

@dragon316 - He mentions Batman & Robin being a couple in the first movie, and he says "I'M BATMAN" in the second one.

@UncleHarm1 - That might be the case.

So how do Marvel comics get to have an actual character called Spider-Boy in their comics without legal trouble?

dracula

@ObserverIO - because it has no resemblance to Superboy

marvel also has their own scarecrow character, have no idea how that got around any potential issues
