The amazing success of Sony Pictures' Spider-Verse movies meant other Spidey-based animated projects were always likely to materialize at some point, and a new rumor is claiming that two new animated features are currently in development.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, a movie focusing on a number of the Webhead's many villains and a mysterious "female-led" project are in the works.
Details are sparse, but the female Spidey film is said to be separate to the previously-announced Spider-Woman film. A Gwen Stacy Spider-Verse spin-off is one possibility, and we couldn't resist using Aunt May for the banner given those supposedly accurate reports that Sony was planning a spin-off featuring Peter Parker's beloved aunt prior to Spider-Man: Homecoming (it's highly unlikely... but it would be funny).
As for the villains, Spider-Man has one of the most varied and impressive line-ups of rogues in the Marvel Comics pantheon, so this definitely has a lot of potential. Whether they'd be bad guys we met in the Spider-Verse movies or not remains to be seen.
Sony's live-action "SSU" got off to a strong start with the Venom movies, but Morbius underperformed and the recent Madame Web proved to be an outright critical and commercial disaster, so it wouldn't exactly be a massive surprise if the studio decided to switch focus to their animated output.
The studio reportedly had high hopes for Madame Web, and already had ideas for a direct sequel and spin-offs featuring the main characters. The current mood on the Sony lot is said to be "gloomy," and with good reason. Despite previous reports placing the movie's budget at around $80 million, it's actually believed to be closer to "the low $100 million range."
In addition to Kraven the Hunter, a third Venom movie slated for Nov. 8, 2024. These movies could well prove to be box office successes and turn things around, but if not, one has to assume that the SSU will be on its last legs.
