The 76th Golden Globe Awards got off to a rocking start tonight as Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the award for Best Motion Picture - Animated, making it the first Marvel movie ever to win a Golden Globe and also firmly places the critically-acclaimed blockbuster in the driver's seat for the Academy Awards next month as it takes a shot at making history.
The animated superhero feature, which was co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, tells the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and will take him on a dimension-shattering adventure as he partners with a number of Spiders from different universes, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), to take down the villainous Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and his cronies.
To date, Spider-Verse, which carried an estimated $90 million production budget (without P&A), has earned over $275.3 million worldwide ($133.8M domestic; $141.5M foreign) and continues to hold strong nearly a month after its initial theatrical debut. With a sequel and a spionff all but confirmed, we should expect to see a whole lot more of Miles, Gwen, and Peter B. Parker in the not-so-distant future.
