Deadline reports that The Flight Attendant star Zosia Mamet is the latest addition to Sony Pictures' Madame Web. As per usual, there's no word on who the actor will play, so let the speculation commence! What we do know is that the movie boasts a massive ensemble, leaving us to wonder how much of a mix of comic book and original characters we'll get.
Dakota Johnson has, of course, already been cast as the title character, while other recent additions include Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, and Adam Scott.
As for Mamet, as well as starring opposite Kaley Cuoco in The Flight Attendant, she's also known for her work in Girls, Parenthood, and Mad Men. This will mark her biggest role to date, so fingers crossed the actor has chose wisely by boarding Sony's divisive Marvel Universe.
In the comic books, Madame Web is typically portrayed as an elderly woman, Cassandra Webb, who is blind and linked up to a life support system that resembles a web. She has psychic abilities and frequently uses other heroes to fight her battles, leading to speculation that this movie is actually some sort of female-led team-up.
However, based on what we've seen in set photos (find all the latest Madame Web news by clicking here), it looks like Johnson is playing the Julia Carpenter version of the character who was the second Madame Web.
Fans don't have a great deal of faith in Madame Web with the writers of Morbius responsible for penning the movie, but there's always a chance they'll surprise us. Either way, we'd imagine this movie will be a very important next chapter in the Marvel Universe Sony is dreaming up.
S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The movie is currently expected to swing into theaters on July 7, 2023.
