There's still a lot of secrecy surrounding Sony Pictures' Madame Web movie, and even though some set photos and supposed plot leaks have done the rounds, no official announcement has been made about the Marvel Comics characters that'll be introduced in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off.
We do know that Dakota Johnson is playing a version of the title character, and co-star Sydney Sweeney's role has now been confirmed.
According to Jeff Sneider on the latest Hot Mic podcast, the Euphoria breakout is "100%" playing Spider-Woman. Which incarnation of the hero is unclear, but previous rumours have pointed to Julia Carpenter.
In the comics, Carpenter became the second Madame Web after the original, Cassandra Webb, was killed by Sarah and Ana Kravinoff. She did also take up the mantle of Spider-Woman, and it sounds like she'll be suiting-up in this movie.
Could Sweeney go on to headline Olivia Wilde's solo Spider-Woman movie? It's been a while since we've had any updates on that project, but Sneider believes it is still in development, and speculates that Sweeney might well play the lead.
Madame Web also stars Isabela Merced, Celeste O'Connor, Adam Scott, Emma Roberts and Tahar Rahim. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) directed from a screenplay by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
The movie was recently pushed back to February 16, 2024.
