6 Major Ramifications The Multiverse Could Have For The Marvel Cinematic Universe

The signs are all pointing to Marvel Studios exploring the Marvel Multiverse over the next few years, and we're now taking a closer look at the ramifications that could have for this shared world...

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on the horizon, What If? promising to explore different timelines, and Spider-Man 3 shaping up to be seriously weird, it's clear now that the events of Avengers: Endgame are going to have much bigger ramifications than anyone first expected.

That introduced the concept of a Multiverse, and Marvel Studios now seems to be running with it.

With time-traveller Kang the Conqueror cast for Ant-Man 3 and Loki set to tangle with the Time Variance Authority in his Disney+ series, things are about to get nuts. With that in mind, we're taking a look at some of the ramifications the Multiverse could now have on this shared world moving forward.

There are some expected directions stories now look set to be taken in, so to check out what some of them are, all you guys need to do is hit that "Next" button down below!

6. Get Ready To Explore Some Desolate Futures

AOA

Desolate futures have become a staple of the Marvel Universe, whether it's in stories like Age of Apocalypse, Spider-Man: Reign, or Age of Ultron. Now, Marvel Studios has the chance to explore those in a big way, with the X-Men franchise particularly well-suited to heading down that route.

It was made clear in Avengers: Endgame that any sort of changes to the timeline could have disastrous consequences, and that's something which can be further explored in future tales.

Everything these heroes do from this point on could change, well, everything, and characters like the X-Men learning what awaits them in the future and spending years trying to undo that opens the door to plenty of fresh storytelling opportunities (Marvel Studios could easily take inspiration from the House of X and Powers of X storylines, for example).

5. Into The (Live-Action) Spider-Verse

Electro

The casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro in Spider-Man 3 has raised a lot of big questions, with fans convinced that the movie is going to pit Tom Holland's web-slinger against threats from multiple Earths.

It's an intriguing prospect, and if that is the case, then it's a storyline Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will almost certainly set the stage for. With Sam Raimi at the helm of that, there are plenty of theories about him bringing back Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, and the Doctor Strange sequel could very easily be the Marvel Studios movie Holland cameos in.

All of this could be leading to some sort of epic live-action "Spider-Verse" project with the Holland, Maguire, and Andrew Garfield versions of Spidey teaming up to battle an interdimensional Sinister Six!

4. Some Familiar Faces From The X-Men Franchise

Mystique

Fox made a lot of major blunders with the X-Men franchise, but the studio redeemed themselves - to some extent - by casting plenty of top tier actors to play these iconic heroes and villains.

Whether we're talking about Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, or Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, it's definitely a shame to think that we won't see those interpretations of the characters again. Well, a Multiverse can go some way in changing that.

Even if it's as simple as actors being able to reprise past roles as new versions of the same characters, it would be great to see Marvel Studios hand-pick some fan-favourites for an MCU return. Alternatively, the Multiverse can also be used to bring mutants to this year from a completely different one.

3. Enter The Fantastic Four

FF323

Where have the Fantastic Four been all this time? No one wants another teenage version of the team, so introducing them that way would be a disappointment, leaving Marvel Studios with few alternatives.

It's been widely speculated that the Quantum Realm and Negative Zone are one and the same, so what if Marvel's First Family have been trapped there exploring the Multiverse for what's been decades for us, but only a few short years for them? That would make fans hoping the Fantastic Four's origin story will be rooted in the 1960s happy anyway, and is a unique idea.

It's also feasible that the Fantastic Four could arrive in the MCU from another Earth, though what would lead them to change planets is hard to say. In terms of past cast members, we wouldn't be against Chris Evans or Michael B. Jordan coming back as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch.

2. Secret Wars (Not That One)

Thors

The hope is that Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take the helm of a Secret Wars movie featuring Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the X-Men, and Fantastic Four. That could definitely happen, but what about the other Secret Wars story?

That featured an Earth created by Doctor Doom which brought all those different parts of the Multiverse together to create a new, crazy world with multiple versions of the same characters.

It was a weird, wonderful mashup, and a story it would be amazing to see play out in the MCU. It has all the makings of an event movie, and if anyone can pull off bringing back actors from different franchises and throwing them all into the same adventure, it's Kevin Feige and the team at Marvel Studios.

1. Heroes Reborn

Heroes-Reborn

Right now, it's looking like Phase 4 will be all about passing the mantle. The Falcon is going to become Captain America, Jane Foster is set to wield Mjolnir as Thor, and Kate Bishop will take over as Hawkeye (and those are just a few examples). However, what about a little further down the line?

While we're certainly not suggesting an adaptation of the mostly awful Heroes Reborn stories, Marvel Studios can bring back classic characters like Iron Man and Black Widow (and Deadpool, of course), by plucking different versions from other worlds, with new actors taking over these roles.

Handled the right way, it wouldn't necessarily be confusing for fans, and instead gives Marvel Studios an effective way to reboot franchises while keeping them in the main MCU.

I really don’t want the multiverse to be the focus of Spidey 3 or the MCU. Keep it in Doctor Strange. I want to see Peter struggle with his identity being revealed as it’s not something that has been done before(even in the comics it’s only been touched on a bit). Have Janie Foxx simply play a new version of Electro native to the MCU. Don’t over complicate it.

@fanboy03191 - I don't know why but I fear that Peter might be saved from the press coverage by one of his alternate incarnations posing as Spider-man while he's in front of cameras. The new statut-quo at the end was one of the only good things to come out from Far From Home, I really don't want it to be undone that easily.

@fanboy03191 - ''Don’t over complicate it.''

The reason the MCU is so big is because it's so digestible for the GA. No way Marvel is gonna do anything that complicated.

@fanboy03191 - I don't know about Spider-verse but I really doubt this will be just Spider-Man vs Electro, since we've already seen that

I doubt any of these will happen in a big way. Aside from some Spider-Man characters, I doubt we will see any familiar faces from other timelines. The one other timeline I do want to see is the alternate 2014 one (maybe Kang's origin point).

And the Fantastic Four should just have their origin in the present day MCU. Ant-Man and the Wasp already did the trapped in the Quantum Realm stuff. I can see their power originate from there, but not really a lot more.

@bkmeijer - It’d be tough but I want the X-Men to be originated in the MCU. Maybe Xavier wiped the knowledge from everyone’s minds or something. Idk.

@fanboy03191 -

This is what I've always wanted.
Portray Xavier as the most powerful psychic on Earth (allowing the build-up and worry for Jean's overabundance of power) and showcase that he's used his incredible power to hide his school and the existence of mutants from the entire planet.
The strain of this use of power can be the reason he's in a wheelchair.
This form of mutant power wouldn't have been detectable by Stark-type technology so that helps explain an established world within their own bubble so we don't have to do the origins again.
This can also allow their story to dive into the internal battle of "exactly what else can Prof. X do with his powers and how many of his students actually joined him under their own free will? A lot of emotion and drama to be had within the X-world.

@SKetCH - The snap could’ve accelerated mutation in humans. But still have mutants as always being there.

@fanboy03191 - I would prefer the collective mind wipe over the snap causing (accelarated) mutations.

The Snap could be the thing to draw them out of hiding though, although I rather see it as a consequence of their own actions.

@bkmeijer -
I agree, the mind wipe/block is way better than the snap "creating" mutants.
I could get behind Xavier having been snapped, the mind wipe/block gets turned off for the 5yrs while he's gone, and when everyone returns it activates the x-gene in a far greater number of the population than when they blipped, making it difficult to get the world under control again... not to mention the new mutants (hardy har har) born during the 5yr gap and those who exposed themselves during Xavier's absence blowing their cover...

But the blip can't be the reason we have mutants.

Them having been here "hiding" under Xavier's powers the whole time is perfectly in line with mutants' analogy to society and one's acceptance within it. The perfect parallel for Magneto and his followers growing tired of hiding in the shadows and feeling superior rather than equal or lesser than.

@fanboy03191 - The theory i have put forth from the beginning, years ago now, was that the FF, Xmen, Ghost Rider, whatever the MCU now has access to could make an appearance via the multiverse for whatever cameo Marvel would like to honor prior actors with and then they could still recast them in the primary universe. I proposed this Garfield, Holland, Tobey situation years ago with only 1 being in the primary MCU and others helping out as needed and when allowed.
JonC
JonC - 10/6/2020, 4:41 PM
@SKetCH - Yep, Xavier has been hiding them the whole time... and the 'snap' actually caused Xavier to momentarily lose control over that situation to where some mutants starting appearing in the MCU. Hence when Scarlet Witch summons her brother... she actually gets the Foxverse version of him.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 10/7/2020, 12:52 AM
@SKetCH - I can actually see it happen that the Snap/Blip causes Xavier to lose control (whether he dies or lives).

But I rather see something as a consequence of what they do themselves. For example to defeat a threat to the mutants they have no choice but to expose themselves to the world.

Both worried and excited for the prospect of the MCU incorporating past live action universes. Could turn out great and either not have that big of an impact, or will be a large impact handled well. Also worried could be the jumping the shark for the MCU. Sure it’ll be handled better than Flashpoint tho

I hope Jamie Foxx is a new incarnation of Electro and doesn't have anything to do with the multiverse. The idea of a multiverse is a cool concept, but if not properly handled it can give way to lazy storytelling and shoehorned fan service. Foxx is a great actor and I wouldn't mind a diffrent take on Max Dillon that was more in common with Bats from Baby Driver then the riddler from Batman Forever.

@CurlyBill - Looking back on it, TASM really did us dirty with spidey villains. gave us boring, CGI-heavy iterations of lizard and electro with a rushed or failed attempt each time to connect their story to peter's.

the best part of spidey vilains is they're connection to peter, which HC and FFH did well. despite all the complaints abt iron man's connection at least it felt natural instead of whatever the hell TASM2 did with electro

"Where have the Fantastic Four been all this time?"

This is where that 5 year time gap in Endgame can come into play. In that 5 years, you can say the F4 got their powers, built up their name and became somewhat well known explorers/heroes.

You don't have to bring them from another universe. Definitely don't have be from another time period. Just have them already be here. It's that simple.

Now the X-Men on the other hand...

I'm really only interested in 2 things:

-Desolate futures
-Heroes reborn

Exploring crazy futures is always one of my favorite things in longform storytelling. I was actually pretty sad we didn't truly get any of that in Endgame because that was a great opportunity for it

Heroes reborn is also a cool idea but I wouldn't want that until waaaaaayyyyy down the line, and only if it makes sense to do that rather than rebooting the entire MCU

I don't want any stain from the Fox-Men or previous Spider-Man entries (even the good parts of the Raimi trilogy) and I also really don't feel we need some crazy excuse for the FF to be who they are. This can all be pretty simple if the next phases allow things to progress in loose connection without feeling the need to tie things TOO closely together

DO NOT WANT. I'd keep the multiverse exclusive to WandaVision and Doc Strange 2.

i'm torn with what i think they should do with the future of black panther. i truly feel like t'challa's story has so much potential to continue in the MCU but i know they need to put respect on chadwick's memory.

even though the likely choice they make will either be passing of the mantle with shuri or alternate reality, i kind of hope they manage to continue our T'Challa's story without compromising chadwick's take. the mcu needs a black panther for both their world and to inspire in the real world. shit i really hope coogler crafts something that works.
