Despite previous reports, it seems that both Gwen Stacy AND Mary Jane Watson will be vying for Peter Parker's attention in Marc Webb's Spidey reboot..

Yesterday we got word that Emma Stone and Mia Wasikowska were front runners for the female lead in the film, which was assumed to be Gwen Stacy since previous reports suggested Mary Jane wouldn't be a part of the proceedings. Well now Entertainment Weekly report..



Attention all you comic book fans out there: It looks like this Spider-Man, which is set in high school, will feature both of Spidey’s most prominent love interests, the red-headed Mary Jane Watson, played in the last three movies by Kirsten Dunst, and blonde Gwen Stacy, which Bryce Dallas Howard played in Spider-Man 3, say sources close to the production.

If this is the case, the blonde Wasikowska(Alice In Wonderland) and red headed Stone(Easy A) may not be competing for one role, but both be up for the separate ones of Gwen and MJ respectively.

Neither one is officially a front runner for either role as of yet, but with filming due to commence in December, expect such an announcement pretty soon.

Well I kind of thought this is what was going to happen. A pete, Mj, and Gwen love triangle will add to the drama that was missing from the first trilogy.

BTW does anyone know why no one, myself included, can comment on the article I recently posted about Chris Nolan? It's been up for sometime but no comments stay up, even one I posted asking why this was.

cool news, although it necessarily mean it will be a love triangle. originally wasn't MJ just a friend of gwens, and her and peter only hooked up after gwens death, if I'm remembering that right.

Personally, I don't think MJ is a necessary part of the movie, but I'd be ok with her being there if a great actress like Stone were to play her!

Wasikowska's fugliness and her COMLPETE lack of screen presence makes me VERY worried. They should definitely get Palmer for Gwen. And Stone is a very decent choice for MJ IMO.

Sorry but I thought all the hate for Dunst was because she wasn't "model hot" like MJ in the comics. You think this Stone chick is?? If her eyes were any further apart she'd be a hammerhead shark. (No offence miss Stone;) I haven't seen her act though so maybe she'd be good in the role. Agree about Wonderland chick, seems bad for Gwen, but, you never know. These directors see things the fans don't(obviously!).

I think it would be better for Peter to be in college rather than high school, kinda might make more sense if Lizard is in this movie.

On this casting business - I did like Fox's casting of Hugh Jackman for Wolverine.

Ror- IMO, Mia needs a car wreck, years of reconstructive surgery and to be cosmically infused with acting talent and screen presence before she can ever come close to be Gwen. In short, she'll never be Gwen material, or straight up box office material at that. I have no clue what hallucinations "these directors" had prior to filming Alice but they fumbled flat on their faces! Thank god the rest of the supporting cast was stellar. They single handedly saved the movie in my eyes. Stone on the other hand i feel looks good enough and acts good enough for MJ's role. She has a cute smile which is the only thing that ever bothered me about Dunst. Dunst is very gorgeous when she's not showing her snaggleteeth. And she's always shown decent acting talents as well.

She was great in both of those, I actually think she'll do quite well as MJ, she deft has the attitude of MJ in the comics which is something that Dunst was lacking in the previous movies. But seriously ROR, you haven't seen ZOMBIELAND?? Get with it man, your missing a great flick! :-)

Oh I have seen both of them! Didn't realize that was her! Ok, I have to rewatch though because I can't really recall if i thought she was good or not. Anyway, chick ain't ugly don't get me wrong, but I don't find her any more attractive than Dusnt to be honest..who I actually thought was smokin in the first film.

for me Dunst was fine, ya gotta love that wet t shirt scene, but I think Ms. Stone has the attitude that MJ needs. I LOVE the Spider-man movies (ok, I LIKE 3) but the two things I thought they needed most was Spidey's wise-cracking and Mary Jane's party girl (borderline cock teasing) attitude! I have a lot of hope for this flick and so far so good.

Yeah, my problem with Dunst was not her appearance, but her acting, she just didn't pull off the right tone for MJ. It was either miscasting or misdirecting. Emma has shown that she can pull off that confident sexy attitude that MJ needs.

Stone is cute as hell, but MJ is supposed to be supermodel hot. and she's not funny. she's actually kind of a bitch lol

and they prob won't fight over him. they don't even get interested in eachother until Gwen dies, right? so they'll prob get peter and gwen together in the first, kill her in the second, and get pete and mj together in the third. something like that

NO ONE!!!!

Peter Parker was a HUGE dork in high school, very shy and no one was interested in dating him. He was socially awkward and very nervous around girls. Additionally, he was constantly picked on by jocks and other bullies. He didn't get together with Gwen Stacy until into his college years, and then later MJ until after she died.

Any of this bullsh1t about him being in a love triangle is either wishful thinking or they're doing it wrong before filming even begins.

The boy was a nerd and any desire to retcon that back history is a disservice to the creators & writers of Spider-Man, but also a slap in the face to readers that followed his stories when they were actually in high school themselves. THAT was the whole point of Spider-Man! That regular kids in school could actually relate to him.

(And don't give me that crap that it's being taken from the Ultimates line. That book is very new, not well-known like the previous 40 years of stories, plus, didn't even make it to 10 years in story, so it's nowhere near a dominant history. The facts are that Parker was a dork and being Spider-Man gave him confidence as he grew up and THAT is how he should be portrayed, not successful with girls in school, etc. )

These characters, Gwen and MJ, should be there as part of the story and history, but not be pining for him, nor competing for him. If anything, they should start the story when he is a senior and then the rest would fall into place naturally.

Btw, Andrew Garfield looks too old to play a high school student. How does no one see this fact?!? The man himself raised the issue!

This reboot is looking like it will suck, not as much as X-Men: First Class, but still pretty crappy.
