As Destin Daniel Cretton Signs Up To Direct Hawaii Five-O Movie, Where Does That Leave Spider-Man 5?

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is developing a new Hawaii Five-O movie, but as he gears up to shoot Naruto, what of his Spider-Man: Brand New Day sequel?

Deadline has revealed that Paramount Pictures is putting together a package to bring Hawaii Five-O to the big screen. Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton is developing the project with an eye to directing, while Chris Bremner (Bad Boys for Life) will write the script. Noah Oppenheim (Jackie) is producing.

Attempts to develop the classic 1960s TV series as a movie have been made in the past, while there was a small-screen reboot which ran for a decade on CBS starting in 2010. That starred Alex O'Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park.

The original Hawaii Five-O followed an elite, fictional state police task force answering directly to the governor of Hawaii. Detective Captain Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), a tough former Navy intelligence officer, heads the small four-man team that handles major, high-stakes crimes across the islands.

As the trade puts it, "Done right, there is a great leading-man role opportunity here for a film shot in a most beautiful location, and franchise potential for the crime procedural premise."

So, where does this leave Spider-Man 5? The report briefly mentions that Cretton "has a lot of irons in the fire, including the inevitable next Spidey instalment and a Naruto film."

Naruto is up next for the filmmaker, so the question now is: does he tackle Spider-Man 5 after that and before he moves on to Hawaii Five-O, or will this reboot be the priority? If the latter happens, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures will surely seek a new director to continue Peter Parker's story.

This also doesn't bode well for Shang-Chi 2, a movie that it seems doubtful will ever happen after Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' release in 2021.

Cretton has repeatedly played coy when asked about Spider-Man 5, but suggested he'd be interested in returning while discussing Brand New Day's ending. "Listen, we’re definitely not trying to torture people with ambiguity. I feel like what’s very clear is the emotion you’re left with when we cut to black. To me, there’s a very clear feeling of joy — just enough — and then you cut to black."

"I have seen the theories, and I love the theories. I think they’re so cool, and I don’t want to stop that conversation by putting my opinion in the middle of it. Knowing there will be another movie, that conversation will continue in the writer’s room as we figure out — if we figure out — what we’re going to do next."

"That’s what’s so cool about these movies. The fans are so engaged. Everybody on our side is listening to everything," he continued. "Those are conversations we’ve had in the writers’ room as well, and I think it’s fun that everybody is participating not just in analyzing this movie, but potentially in creating whatever happens in the next one."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters. A release date for Spider-Man 5 has not been announced.

Poor Shang-Chi

@ThorArms -
Despite what people believe, the Shang Chi film was not popular enough to warrant a sequel and Disney are not going to take the risk when the franchise is not performing well as a whole.

Tom Holland will be filming for Avengers: Secret Wars during 2027.

Naruto will begin filming in 2027 for a 2028 release.

Both Tom & DDC will be free to film Spider-man 5, if DDC returns, around mid/late 2028.

Most likely they will be targeting a December 2029 release date given that Marvel currently have May 4th 2029, July 13th 2029 and November 9th 2029 currently scheduled.

Though it's also possible that Spider-man 5 doesn't happen until July 2030.

MCU dropped the ball with their new characters post endgame

@ShimmyShimmyYA - we needed to see more of alot of them then we did but i think once a universe gets as big as the MCU did , it’s also hard to give everyone a time to shine consistently.

@TheVisionary25 - it’s hard for sure but you gotta take the plunge and go for it , hindsight we didn’t need Thor 4 or ant man 3 really

FATWS could’ve just been cap 4

@ShimmyShimmyYA - that’s fair , I’m sure they had their reasons for doing them at the time

We know the D+ mandate was one hence Falcon and the Winter Soldier being born out of that since many liked Mackie and Stan’s chemistry.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a mixture in terms some being business decisions and others being “ i think we can make something fun & cool here”.

Or Spider-Man 5 releases in 2030 because Marvel realizes the value in letting the audience miss their characters.

He's a great choice for Miami Vice, but its absolute insanity that he isn't doing Shang-Chi 2 next.

Now The MCU will have to coddle him after this giant Spidey success. He’ll make these other lesser things to make them feed his ego.

No need for a follow up to his mediocre Shang-chi movie.

Gotta have more Spidey in 28 or 29.

Hawaii 5-0 could be great if they don’t do you know what to it.

Ah , i see they are trying to already cash in on the apparent 80’s tv show movie reboot craze that’s gonna start with Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice starring Austin Butler & Michael B Jordan coming out in 2028 as of now lol…

Anyway i think Destin is from Hawaii so i can see him wanting to do this as a personal film since he might be a fan of the original show but as stated , he seems to have a few projects in the works after Naruto which is likely his next (i personally hope he does Spider Man 5 before this and that Shang Chi 2 just gets a new director at this point) so might be a bit before this happens.

I do get him getting other things lined up to do since there are factors such as Holland’s own schedule amongst other things that need to be figured out before preceding with another Spidey so why wait for something that hasn’t been set in stone yet?.

Anyway in regards to Hawaii Five-O , could be fun but we’ll see!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Hollywood has riding that tv remake wave for a while. The Jump Street films (which is getting a new movie, The A Team, The Fall Guy, the Jamie Foxx Miami Vice. Now a new Miami Vice, Murder She Wrote with Jamie Lee Curtis, Rockford Files with David Boreanez, Baywatch, Hawaii Five O…I just hope these new adaptations are better received than some of the previous attempts. I can’t tell you how much I want a new Knight Rider!

I would not be surprised if this is a negotiation tactic to force Sony to come to his house with a dump truck of money. I feel both Cretton and Holland will be playing hard to get but both will be back for Spider-Man 5.

Remakes of shows when the original actors were so iconic whole little interest for me. I can’t imagine wanting a watch a Colombo movie without the great Peter Falk. Now if they really lean into Hawaii as a character and not merely the locale, and lean into the culture, that might make it interesting for me.

Only liked the first part of Shang Chi and even then found myself feeling I was watching another Jacki Chan movie in that first part. Was hoping for a more serious approach and maybe with a different lead.
