We knew Spider-Man: Brand New Day was going to be big, but we're not sure anyone could have predicted it would be this big.

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed solo Spidey adventure continues to break box office records and has now officially passed the $500 million mark domestically.

BND's cumulative domestic gross hit $508.7 million on Thursday, making it the quickest movie to pass the $500 million milestone at the domestic box office and giving it the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history (surpassing Avengers: Endgame).

Earlier this week, the film became the second-fastest movie in history to earn $1 billion worldwide (it didn't quite catch Endgame there).

Only 22 other movies in history have grossed more than $500 million domestically (not adjusted for inflation), and only six of them were MCU projects: Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Avengers. 

A fifth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie has yet to be officially announced, but we'd be very surprised if Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios weren't already making moves on that front. Rumor has it that tentative plans are in place for a new trilogy, but again, nothing has been confirmed.

Following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins a brand new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult and living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves. In a New York that no longer knows his name, he has devoted himself wholeheartedly to protecting his city as Spider-Man full-time.

But as the demands on him grow, he is put under increasing pressure. This triggers an unexpected physical change that threatens his existence, while a strange wave of crime emerges - and gives rise to one of the most dangerous threats he has ever faced.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film is produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O'Connor. The cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters.

@centaur - presuming this isn’t just joking around, saw it Thursday and again on Monday. Both showings completely sold out. And these were both at different rando locations. Not Dolby laser premiere blah blah theaters. Also, saw it with different groups each time and 7 out of the 9 people that comprised those two groups all felt this was the best Spidey movie thus far (including me)… most of these were not untrained movie goers either. Most are real movie nerds who have been negative to mixed on most MCU movies post Endgame.

Sony should really just work out a more profitable deal with Marvel and give them full control of the live action spiderman stuff

Cause yeah, no amount of Morbin in going to save their live action spin offs

Even the Venom movies made less and less with each film

@dracula - sounds ideal for the fans but why would Sony give up even 1 more percent of profit. They are the ones holding the cards here. Dont get me wrong MCU is fantastic!!! But outside Spiderman and avengers majority of the last few movies have underperformed

Cool!!.

I still believe this will easily surpass 2 billion and become the highest grossing film of the year…

I don’t see any of the upcoming films being able to beat it out tbh with the exception of Doomsday which has a chance but has to deal with more competition in Dune Part 3 then Spidey has to so we’ll see.

Anyway , congrats still to Destin , Tom & the rest of the cast & crew for the films success which is deserved since it’s quite good imo!!.

It'll be hell on Earth for Sony to give the film rights back to Marvel. 😂 But in all seriousness, it's a win/win for both of them. Sony being less demanding on creative so Marvel can cook, while Sony just lies back and collects most of its money.

This was my favorite movie this summer but I don't get anything if it makes money. Neither do any of you. When did CBMs become sports and the box office is the score? This really is the nonsense football fans do when their team wins.

Anyone who's ever in their life been even as a fan part of such "competitions" (sports, consoles, music bands, comics, franchises, you name it) knows exactly the kind of dopamine released when their brand / artist / athlete / icon of choice enjoys such success and popularity.

This kind of faux "it's all beneath me and you are too" superiority only comes from the kind of person who does not want to admit that they were rooting for the failure of those clearly succeeding.

@Hobmoblin - More money = more good Spidey films. This movie is exactly what fans have been wanting from a Spider-Man film. Maybe they'll start listening and do more of this. It's also why the shitty Thunderbolts are being pushed hard for Doomsday. That was the best they had profit wise and story wise in Phase 5. Fans should definitely show up to movies like this so those corners of the MCU should be front and center in event films. Same way Black Panther's corner, Steve Rogers, Fantastic Four, etc are the main characters in Doomsday. If Eternals was a huge hit, I'm positive we would see them leading the charge against Doom lol.

Just a thought.

At least it was good and the disparate franchise characters (though probably there for marketing) shared common themes that built towards what the movie was trying to say about man vs monster. And I'm so glad it had something to say beyond give us a billion again.

I understand why people like the fan service. But the plot was pretty weak and contrived for me. I’d say it’s at this point, overrated imo.

When you boil it down, anything that enjoys such measure of popularity is at least to some extant even a smidge overrated. Thing is, when plastering that label on something, we risk making it sound as worse than it actually is.

When something is an 8, treating it even as slightly higher as 8.5 is objectively right to be called as overrated.

But!

When we call something that is seen as 8.5 "overrated", is it clear that we see it as only slightly lower, or are we giving the impression that we think of it as low as 6, for instance?

This is just all my opinion so to each their own…but I didn’t like evil Jean grey and how they want us to forget how sadistic she was possessing MJ and throwing people off buildings and and into cars etc.

I also didn’t like how contrived and pointless Peter’s mutation stuff was. It was obviously all just to make him invent something for the final act and give generic bad guy control over Jean. They should have gone full man spider by the end and have real consequences to his evolution.

Banner’s state is completely unexplained and basically a retcon of smart hulk and his stupid son in she-hulk etc, like why can’t he control hulk anymore?? Don’t get me wrong, we need angry hulk but there was no explanation and also just served for a fight scene and plot device. Like, they throw him in an ambulance and we don’t even get one more scene of what happened to him by the end of the movie. Peter doesn’t visit him or check on him or anything. Felt like he wasn’t even a character in the film.

Punisher and Peter were my favorite parts of the film. Punisher had an arc unlike Hulk.

I just don’t think shoving in Jean as the “villain” to set up X-men was the right move. Like they could have at least had her working with maybe an evil psychic and that would explain why so much evil stuff was done but then in the third act, she has a change of heart and helps Peter stop the evil psychic. That would have been better imo.

I also was disappointed with how albad the cgi was in a lot of scenes, especially the montage and web slinging. Some parts hold up worse than the raimi trilogy 🤔

I watched NWH again and yes the magic plot hangs on by a literal thread but at least those plot contrivances gave us really good character arcs in a lot of characters, heck, even Garfield has a character arc and he’s only in the third act of the film.

Some writing was surprising better with even more characters in NWH than BND imo.
