Spider-Man: Brand New Day: Sony Boss Hails Marvel Movie's "Monumental Achievement"

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken countless box office records. However, the most impressive came yesterday when it passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office with $936.77 million.

Deadline has published a congratulatory note that Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman sent to staff, expressing his gratitude and excitement to see the movie make history.

How did Spider-Man: Brand New Day become this successful? It has 90% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 97% on the audience-generated Popcornmeter, so people have clearly embraced the web-spinner's latest solo outing, with the five-year wait since Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Jean Grey mystery only building anticipation.

Even so, the movie has massively exceeded expectations, striking the right balance between action, humour, and heart. Spider-Man: Brand New Day doesn't even prominently feature a Spider-Man villain, so could more X-Men team-ups be on the way for Peter Parker?

At the very least, we'd expect Sony to once again find something for fans to speculate about when Spider-Man 5 finally rolls around.

Here's Rothman's Spider-Man: Brand New Day letter in full:

Dear Colleagues,

There are milestones. And then there are moments that make history.

Last night, somewhere in the broad expanse of North America, some lucky soul purchased a ticket to Spider-Man: Brand New Day that made it the highest grossing film in the history of our country. This is a monumental achievement on the part of everyone who works in all parts of SPE, as we are also the third-highest grossing film of all time worldwide.

I want to express my gratitude to Ravi and everyone in Tokyo for their consistent support of the film company, to Destin, Amy, Kevin, Rachel and all of the terrific filmmakers and cast, especially our long-time partner, the fabulously talented Tom Holland. And to all of you!

The movie business will knock you around. So please take a beat today and savor the feeling. Number one of all time. Pretty darn cool.

Thank you all,

Tom

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter that he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

In our review, we concluded by saying, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day is everything fans could want. Emotional, hilarious, and heartfelt, it’s an action-packed love letter to the comics and one of Spidey’s best big-screen adventures. Spider-Man has never been more amazing."

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.

Well , that’s a nice note from Rothman regardless of how you may feel about the guy.

Anyway congrats to Destin , Tom aswell as the rest of the cast & crew for the film’s immense success!!.

The movie just balanced almost everything well imo with fun action aswell as humor & heart that hit while also feeling like the most “Spider Man”-y film in the MCU thus far which appeased alot of comic fans well , it was truly a rare alchemy of a film I feel.

However even though I liked BND quite a bit , I still hope the next installment has a Spidey villain as the main antagonist and if they don’t want to touch Norman Osborn then I suggest a different Goblin…

@TheVisionary25 - Yup, he Pacal, and Arad aren't going anywhere...for better or worse they're now linked to the franchise.

Hopefully all the staff got a bonus or at least a company wide lunch/dinner to celebrate.

Unless Disney outright purchases Sony’s movie division, they will never get the rights to Spider-Man back. Time to pull a Fox, and make a big purchase.

Such a great achievement which followed NWH which was another giant success.

If they get the X-Men right the MCU could remain a giant powerhouse for many years to come.

I’m not sure how well Avengers and FF will do after Secret Wars though.

Imagine 4-5 years from now with the Avengers, FF, and X-Men fighting off a full scale Shi’ar invasion. Would the top MCU villains have to join them to save Earth or maybe our whole galaxy?

@DocSpock - If they're smart the focus will shift to the mutants, while slowly building other heroes' stories as well.

If they focus on good scripts and leave the dumbass fanatics outta the writer's room they'll do good.
