“I sat with [screenwriters] Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman in a restaurant for lunch in New York, and they pitched me this movie… And I was crying” Garfield told Yahoo! of Amazing Spider-Man 2. “I'm an easy crier, but I was really emotionally moved by what they said to me. And I think a lot of my emotion was because these two guys love the character as much as I do. I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through,” the British actor added.
“You know the first time we had to deal with the origin story which was fun, but tricky. This time around the flood gates opened for all of us,” admits director Marc Webb. “We got to explore things that just hadn’t been explored cinematically before. Whether it’s Electro you know, or more the story with Gwen…” He adds, “This time around we’ve really focused on making this a driving action movie from the get go.” On Gwen and Peter’s romance, Emma Stone says, “They’re struggling with some things. There’s a lot of tension there’s a lot going on.”
As there's a third and fourth Amazing Spider-Man film scheduled for releases in May 2016 and May 2018 respectively, where is the franchise headed? “We did think about these movies from the very beginning as a series of movies,” says Webb. “Really a trilogy to be totally frank.” Garfield, however, is not sure his neighborhood friendly hero will be involved in the fourth movie . “I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world. Use our imagination, and kind of expand. That’s what this film is,” he added. It's possible Garfield's contract will be renewed, but perhaps the fourth film is actually one of the spin-offs which Sony producers teased recently. What do you think?
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
Directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for release on May 2, 2014!
