U2 Takes Over The Spider-Man Musical

U2 Takes Over The Spider-Man Musical

It's hard to say when, but a little while ago all the headlines reporting news about the dreaded Spider-Man Musical became "U2's" Spider-Man Musical. From the sounds of it, they are really digging the project. Proof that U2 has FINALLY become uncool.

U2’s Spiderman musical could open within a year, guitarist The Edge has revealed.

He and Bono have been writing the music and lyrics for the project which is being made with Tony-winning director Julie Taymor.

Speaking for the first time about the project, The Edge said a number of the songs had already been written and the musical is “in a pretty good state”.

In an interview for the new edition of Q, he explained: “I think the musical had its heyday back in the ’40s, ’50s, ’60s era. I don’t think there’s been anything that interesting done in it since … Anyway, we’ve always harboured this sneaky ambition that maybe one day we might try our hand in that area."

Since hooking up with Taymor, who won Tonys for her work on Disney's Lion King, Bono and The Edge have teamed up with scriptwriter Glenn Berger. "He’s come up with some great dialogue. The overall story was really Julie working with Glenn, and Bono and myself riding shotgun with the odd idea here and there – as they do for the songs.

"We love to delve into other people’s creative worlds and figure out how it all happens. We’ve written a lot of the songs at this point. It’s in a pretty good state, and I hope it’ll open this year. We’re not sure where in the world, but most likely it will be in New York."

It is not the first time U2 have been associated with a comic book movie - they wrote the theme for Batman Forever, Hold Me Thrill Kiss Me Kill Me which featured an animated version of the band in the promo.

The guitarist said he and Bono would be around for a "good few weeks" of the rehearsals: "There won’t be a full orchestra – it’ll be something like 18 or 20 musicians: string players, brass, some woodwind. The core will be a rock’n’roll band. But it is going to be interesting to write for other people. We have already written a lot of songs that are for women to sing. That’s a whole other set of challenges, to write in the right key and all those technical things."

Lol, Ror, what about the wall of TVs behind Spidey showing Spider Zoo TV and the world events he's talking about. Of course MJ would reply telling him how their love is more important, and he'd explain in song the grief and suffering caused and why we all have to fight the problem, after all we are all heroes, we can all make a difference, our love for the world is more important than that we feel for our loved ones.

Maybe they will recicle some used Cats' costumes, or maybe instead of blowing all those millions of dollars, they could have used that money to feed hungry children on emerging countries.

Wonder when the Bat-musical will start production?

I really, really hope this isn't a misguided attempt at marketing to expand 'fanboy' interests into musicals. You know, tap another financial vein from their suppossedly ample expendable income. Whatever the case, this looks just plain awful.

oh and Noobmike, be careful what you say about the bat-musical Don't want to give Warner Bros. any ideas.... ;)

Personally, I could care less if they do this. I mean I hate U2, but whatever, and in any rate, this isn't the first Spider-Man musical. So screw it. I just want the movies not to suck. Where's Spidey 4?

So what...Boycott this too. It's a Spiderman musical...Do you really care enough about it? Seriously. Nobody is really going to see this thing after it's made...

I would never in a million years ask for a musical to be made about "a few of my favorite things" but I don't care if they do. I'm not going to cry or give it another though. It is an abortion waiting to happen, because Spiderman ISN'T musical material...Oh well.

Oh yea, some musicals are actually really good. Look at almost every Disney animated movie ever made...Yea, musicals. Fantasia is awesome, so is Lion King. Lion King the musical is also reallo good. But not Spiderman.
Anyway, bad idea, bad marketing, bad karma, bad press. It's going to flop, if it even get's finished. END.

Might as well cast Stan Lee. This is going to be a real peach. I hope Fox gets some money out of this somehow. I love Fox.

I think it'll look ridiculous...I mean a spider-man musical? It sounds as if the people who thought of this just put words onto a board and then chose a word at random and put it next to "musical". idt it would sell or at least appeal to comic book fans and musical fans...

Dogchasingcars, you've got the right idea. This is definitely going to be far superior to Spiderman 3. I'd actually prefer this to 4, 5, and 6 movies so that I wouldn't have to see those lame actors again. I'm tired of them. Also, while I realize Watchmen is done by DC, wouldn't it be amazing if the squid from the ending made an appearance?

I think you guys are being a little too hard on it. I know when I found out about it, I was stoked. Then again, I'm biased because I'm into all those musicals and choral stuff.

It's always fun to see someone else interpret my favorite things. Now, I may or may not actually like what they end up doing with it, but I'm still planning on giving it a chance. In fact, I've told many people about it, and they're excited for it.

So just because you think it ruins the comic doesn't mean that it necessarily does. To me, nothing can be worse than Spiderman 3.

Hmm..I wonder...it could be good. U2 isn't a bad band unless you're the kind of person who only listens to one kind of music....

Spiderman musical = bad idea. Now go have a drink (or 12) call a cab, watch the ball drop and make a resolution.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE NEW YEAR'S EVE! See you next year!
