UPDATE: Robert Downey Jr. Joins The Cast Of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING As 'Tony Stark'/'Iron Man'

We were expecting this, but it has now been confirmed that Captain America: Civil War star Robert Downey Jr. has signed up to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming next year. Hit the jump for details...

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Robert Downey Jr. wil reunite with Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming, returning to the role of Tony Stark just over a year after we'll see him as Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War. The actor has reportedly closed a deal to star in Marvel and Sony's reboot, and while no details about what he'll be getting up to have been revealed at this stage, it wouldn't be surprising to see him take on a fairly sizeable role as you just know that the latter studio will want him to have a presence in the trailers and posters! Will he be joined by any other Avengers?

That remains to be seen! Regardless, Downey Jr. has joined a cast which also includes Maria Tomei, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Laura Harrier, and possibly Michael Keaton. The trade adds that while the actor's last negotiation added him to Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, his contract was once again renogiatated for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Do you want a Spider-Man/Iron Man team-up?

UPDATE: Deadline now says that Michael Keaton has dropped out of talks to star in the movie.

@Brainiac13 - Hulk would be a better fit, but Ragnarok and Spider-Man will be filming at the same time.

Honestly, Iron Man is the least interesting solo hero next to Thor to put in a Spidey film.

With Cap, we got that NYC love. Cap from Brooklyn, Spidey from Queens.

Daredevil is also interesting for obvious reasons

With Hulk, we'd have brains and brawn teaming up.

With Iron Man, we got 2 geniuses with gadgets. Not an interesting dynamic.

It's exciting to see RDJ a part of it but man Prince's death ruined my day.

Interesting story, I was talking to SuperCat a year ago in chat. And he said something along the line of "F*ck New York and everyone who lives there."

True story.

Oh, the hater tears are gonna be a'flowin' on this one.

This was a given from the day this film was announced.

@MattBellissimo - Kind of dumb to announce this now though. I mean, sure, the odds that Stark would be the one to bite the dust in Civil War were slim, but now we know them. They did the same thing with Hawkeye in AoU, annoucing he'd be in Civil War before AoU came out, so that whole death fake out fooled nobody. I don't understand why they do this.

@MattBellissimo - Honestly, I don't want this because I would rather have an adaption of Spider-Verse. Kind of like the video game they made but also kind of like the multiverse they featured in the 90s show and the recent comic. Imagine it: somebody is killing Spider-Men across the Multiverse, this way we can see Tobey Maguire' Spider-Man again as well. It would also maybe even allow a Guardians crossover due to cosmic levels of amazingness.

@Yaf - While I like that idea immensely, I think he majority of people wanna forget Garfield's Spidey. :(

@MiopTop - Because you can have stakes in a film without having to kill your heroes off. I don't want to go into a film thinking "gee, who is gonna bite it in this one???"

Death is not the only consequence in superhero films, and there are ways to make them meaningful without offing someone. I'm glad the MCU has (for the most part) realized this.

@MiopTop - I have a theory. Bear with me for a second... What if... Nobody dies... YET, the movie is good and has stuff you couldn't see coming?

Crazy, right?

@McSullivan - Sure it could, I'm almost certain it'll be awesome. But what do they lose by waiting 3 more weeks to make this announcement ?

@MiopTop - Agreed. Also, *SPOILER* I've seen the leaked script for this and there is a scene where Spidey and Iron Man fight after Peter catches Tony banging his Aunt May. Right before Spider man is going to finish him off Tony says "Don't tell Pepper what I did" to which Peter replies "Pepper? Why did you say that name! I love salt and Pepper on my food!"

Also, in before all the complaints begin about Iron Man overshadowing Spidey. Marvel has said from day 1 this film will focus on PETER and his superhero life, end of story.
