SUPERGIRL Director Reveals Another Superman Scene And Teases Tension Between The Cousins

Supergirl director Craig Gillespie has revealed new details about Superman's role in the upcoming DC Studios movie, teasing a complicated dynamic between Clark Kent and Kara Zor-El.

There have been rumours for months about David Corenswet's Superman appearing in Supergirl, and DC Studios confirmed his return in the latest trailer for the movie. That showed the Man of Steel speaking to his cousin over a video call, but there will be more to his role.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Supergirl director Craig Gillespie teased at least one more scene featuring Superman. That will come when she arrives on Earth to find that her baby cousin is now an adult and costumed do-gooder.

"It was actually our first day out the gate," the filmmaker said, confirming we'll get a full exploration of Kara Zor-El's origin story, including the moment she rockets away from the doomed Krypton. "She just landed, so she doesn't know English. So she's out of the gate speaking Kryptonian."

The closing moments of Superman hinted at some tension between Clark Kent and Kara, and Gillespie put that down to their "different upbringings."

He added, "Superman hasn't gone through trauma. He came from a very loving family and was almost groomed to be in this role, whereas Supergirl has been through trauma and the role's kind of being pushed upon her at a later age, and she's having to adjust to that."

"Even though they're cousins, you get this almost older-sibling dynamic, and that can be adversarial at times," Gillespie continued. "He's the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she's having to find a way and find herself."

It seems likely that Supergirl will return in next summer's Man of Tomorrow, particularly as that's the next chapter of James Gunn's "Superman Saga." There's also a very good chance that the Woman of Tomorrow knows more about Brainiac than her cousin does, delivering some handy exposition.

The majority of Supergirl is expected to take place in the cosmos, meaning Superman's in-person appearance will likely be limited to that flashback of Kara's arrival. However, it was recently reported that Clark Kent has been added to the movie's ending in recent test screenings.

Supergirl, DC Studios' newest feature film to hit the big screen, arrives in theaters worldwide next summer from Warner Bros. Pictures, and stars Milly Alcock in the dual role of Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. Craig Gillespie directs the film from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira.

When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. Alcock stars alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.

The film is executive produced by Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther. Behind the camera, Gillespie is joined by director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer Neil Lamont, editor Tatiana S. Riegel, costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, Visual Effects Supervisor Geoffrey Baumann, and composer Ramin Djawadi Junkie XL Claudia Sarne.

Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.

I like the sound of their dynamic though we already got teased about the tension between them in Superman where Clark doesn’t really approve of her hard drinking ways and they don’t seem particularly close as of yet…

We had a rumor not long ago about a scene of Clark & Kara speaking Kryptonian and so it seems to be about her arrival on Earth which I like because she wouldn’t really know English then.

Anyway , I know we are suppose to explore Krypton & Argo City a bit in this film thus I hope we do get some clarification if the views of her parents aligned with Jor-El & Lara’s or not ( I’m assuming not and that it’s something the latter 2 decided on their own as scientists who wanted to preserve their species etc).

"Superman hasn't gone through trauma."
-Other than never knowing his true parents and having the world he came from totally destroyed, but yeah. 😑

"He's the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she's having to find a way and find herself."
- So, he's a "sensitive" pussy and she's strong and gritty? Wow, that's so original. 🙄

We've gotten to the point in Western "culture" where men's experiences, pain, and struggles are mocked and devalued to such an extent that they've turned THE most powerful superhero ever into a weak ineffectual joke.

@HelloBoysImBack - You're probably right.
Having people whistle at you, having people hold doors for you, and getting free drinks is truly a struggle compared to having part of your penis cut off after birth without consent, being expected to work more dangerous occupations that lead to death, and being expected to lay down your life for a random woman who would never even consider doing the same for you.
True that.

@Feralwookiee - I mean, Superman always seemed like a Boy Scout to me. It makes sense. He was brought up by loving parents that taught him to love and be good, kind and respectful. In the rural country-side. Also, the fact that he can’t be physically hurt by anyone… why would he really be toughened up? Her being older and experiencing the destruction of her planet and being cognizant for the deaths of her parents… would realistically toughen someone up and harden them. Creating a chip on their shoulder.

@Feralwookiee - Also, it’s funny how people seem to generalize that just because Superman or which ever male hero is built in a kinder, sensitive, caring and good manner, he’s a “pussy”. For gods sake, he’s a superhero. Don’t we want our heroes to be these things? It’s not like Gunn is saying “all men are now pussys!”. Why generalize and kind of make it so personal? I don’t think it’s meant to categorize all men that way. It’s ok, bro. No one is calling you that. In this case it’s not Hollyweird… it’s weird to be upset at a character trait that Superman has always had.

@LibraMatter - She's not older than him; she's younger.

"he (Superman) can’t be physically hurt by anyone"
-Did you see Gunn's movie?
He gets hurt and gets his ass beat by EVERYONE.
There's no reason for him to such a soft character, other than that's what Gunn/Hollywood wants.

Also, the word is spelled "pussies". And if Gunn ISN'T suggesting that all the men in his movies aren't overly sensitive incompetent weak losers, give me and an example of a mentally strong male character of his from the Guardians movies or Superman.

@Feralwookiee - What I meant is some middle school kid can’t actually hurt him if they socked him in the face.

Regarding Kara being younger. You’re right. Regarding her “trauma” I suppose watching the movie will give us insight on Gunn’s iteration of the character and what trauma she has.

Kal-El is a pretty strong minded character. Him being good in the world doesn’t make him weak. He knows who he is for the most part and tries to be a savior for a whole planet. That’s pretty strong.

Also, WOAH you really got me with my spelling error. Haha. Womp womp.

When it isn't ever an "almost older-sibling dynamic" between them though?
