SUPERGIRL Movie In The Works At Warner Bros. With THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX Scribe Oren Uziel Penning The Script

Breaking news from the Warner Bros. lot as it's being reported that Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox; 22 Jump Street) has been tasked with penning the script for a DC movie centered on Supergirl!

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and DC Films are in the early stages of developing a full-length feature film centered on Supergirl, the Last Daughter of Krypton.

Oren Uziel is penning the script. His past work includes 22 Jump Street, Freaks of Nature, Shimmer Lake, and most recently, The Cloverfield Paradox. He also recently completed the screenplays for Paramount's currently filming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie and the Mortal Kombat reboot.

Further details are being kept under wraps for now and there are no producers currently attached, so it'll probably be a while before we see this go into production, but this development does seemingly suggest that it may be more of a priority for the studio, at the moment, than that long-desired Man of Steel sequel as they look to move away from the failed DC Extended Universe and work toward establishing a new template for future Superman movies as well as future Worlds of DC movies.

With Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) not expected to appear in Shazam!, it would make sense for him to reprise his role as Superman here since WB and DC could simultaneously reintroduce audiences to his reimagined take on the character while also introducing his fan-favorite cousin and developing another female-led superhero franchise.

Supergirl joins a long list of currently in-development DC projects, which according to the report, include The Joker, Birds of Prey, The Batman, and The Flash. The Joker will begin filming next month, with an October 4, 2019 release date already set, while the latter three are expected to begin production early next year, likely targeting 2020 release dates.

Helen Slater previously starred as Kara Zor-El in the 1984 live-action movie of the same name. Laura Vandervoort then played the character on the long-running hit series Smallville and Melissa Benoist currently plays Kara on The CW's Supergirl.

Hopefully it's more like the comics than the CW show.

@Nightwing1015 -
Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) is confirmed to be thousands of years old in the DCEU. Read the canon Man of Steel prequel comic.

@Darkknight2149 - I read that years ago but I assumed it would be retconned after Snyder was fired and his vision of the DCEU collapsed.

@Nightwing1015 -
Maybe. It's also possible that the Kara Zor-El in that story might be a distant ancestor to Supergirl. I guess we'll see.

@Nightwing1015 - Snyder was sidelined, and his vision of the DC Films Cinematic Universe (hope rising in a world that seems devoid of it) is still alive and kicking.

That being said, I don't think it will be the same Kara Zor-El. My theory is that the Kara in the pod existed before the Codex started cloning people, Supergirl IS DC Films' Superman's cousin, and the other Kara is DC Films' Power Girl.

@SisterSunday52 - Is it really alive and kicking though? The DC President said that Snyder's vision of the characters "didn't match ours". Or words to that effect.

Daaaamn, i was sure they were going to introduce the character in MOS 2, especially considering the prequel comic (at this point i reckon it's not canon?) but this is surprising.
Superman GOTS to show up here, c'mon, let's be serious here...

@Doomsday8888 - Apparently, Henry Cavill's team is holding up movement on the Superman film. This could be a negotiating move on WB's part to get Cavill to re-size his britches and come to the table.

If a Supergirl movie gets people excited, Cavill knows he's in trouble.
He better get on the phone with The Rock and have him talk to his ex.

@Doomsday8888 - Introducing her in his film would've made more sense to me. While the show depicts their relationship from her perspective, this would tell the story from Clark perspective as he discovers family and a link to the world he never knew. As they continue to rework the character, seeing him take on this protective older brother role would help to show a different side that would endear him to us. Then you can do a spinoff in which she comes into her own and creates an identity apart from him.

@Doomsday8888 - at this point is there really a canon that's worth following in the DCEU?

I'm at the point with it that I think most people are at with the X-Men - Each is more or less it's own thing that you can just take or leave at face value.

Definitely made the last two X films (deadpool 2, Logan) way more fun to watch.

@Doomsday8888 - I still think that is going to be the case.

The MOS sequel (preferably, imo, titled "Last Son of Krypton") will be probably announced as soon as they have agreed on his contract. Given MI: Fallout's success, I'm guessing Cavill wants more money and also know what films he's signing up for. I'm guessing it's going to end being 2 solos and 2 other films, maybe this and JL2.

This film is probably still years away. I'm guessing Uziel will just end up writing the first draft, either because WB already has a story in mind or because he gave them a good pitch. Either way, once a director is confirmed, expect rewrites. I'm thinking MOS sequel in late 2020, early 2021, and Supergirl the following year.

But I'm just guessing.

@ftf530 - I could write a booklet on how there is an established canon in DC Films and how the studio interference tore that canon to pieces.

Sounds like it could be a good read.

I'm surprised they took this long. one would think they'd fast track this thing immediately after WW last year.

not complaining thou. the more super women on the big screen the better.
Nightwing1015

@Spidey91 - They probably held off because of the failure of the last Supergirl movie. But WW has no doubt restored their confidence.

But how are we going to be able to tell the difference between a Supergirl in a movie and a Supergirl CW show!?!?! DC/WB think we are too stupid to tell the difference between any character other than the Flash.

@HeavyMetal4Life - different actress, boom, done
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 8/6/2018, 11:08 AM
@Mattygrand - but according to WB/DC, that is not good enough and we still won't be able to tell the difference! Common sense and logic would say "different actress," but the higher ups think otherwise.
