Artist Peter Rubin Designer of New SUPERMAN Logo Discusses His Work on MAN OF STEEL

Peter Rubin is a concept artist, he has worked on creature designs for Green Lantern. He is now working on logos and set designs of Krypton for Man of Steel.

Peter is a true pioneer in the field of concept art. He was one of the first to completely go all digital. He has contributed to many films, most recently Green Lantern and The Three Musketeers.

Peter Rubin revealed to the website Film Sketchr that he is the man behind the new "S" insignia upon Henry Cavill's chest. While reviews have varied for much of the costume, not too many have voiced disapproval of the redesigned chest logo.

Well, Man of Steel comes out in 2013. I've left some fingerprints on that. I spent nine months working with Alex on the details of Krypton. Like I said, he's a thinker... for him, it was all about the aesthetic and the culture of these aliens - characters that everybody thinks they already know, which made it all the more challenging. He was very particular, which drove me to work hard to try master the style he had in mind. It stretched me, and I think we did some new and interesting things, both from a visual point of view and also technologically, within the process. Zack is a strong director, too, and I'm very excited by what he's bringing to the story. What we did behind the scenes is going to have repercussions in the business, and on screen it's going to knock people's socks off, in my opinion.

I'm a huge Superman fan going back to childhood, and so was very, very glad to be a part of it. I got some amazing design opportunities. For one, I was asked to design the new "S" insignia, the one that Henry Cavill is wearing in all those leaked on-set photos. I've been drawing that in one version or another since I was four years old. I was hitting in the sweet spot, and it felt like one of the high points of my career as a designer. There were some interesting struggles associated with it - I'll tell that story someday. :) - filmsketchr.blogspot.com

Man Of Steel, starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Julia Ormond, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne with Christopher Meloni and Harry Lennix, the reboot is slated for theaters June 14th, 2013!

Maybe i am old school but the Problem is that the s symbol and suit are just way too far off the classic look of superman. Superman year one suit would have been perfect for the big screen. Did not care for green lantern's movie costume either. I believe they missed the mark with the costume trying to change it too much and ofcourse and lois lane.

Not exactly sure what u were getting at but those pictures of everyone else wearing superman suit besides the drawing actually make them look like puny weakling compared to Cavill's Superman pics just saying i hate say it but Reeves superman suit looks Cheap and Rouths suit look too clean like he would never get his hands dirty much less his hair thats one thing that has bother me about of them that and when both there powers were taking away that got the shit beat of them by regular joes (SUPERMAN 2 and return) Cavill's suit look like a warrior and even if didnt have his power he still looks like can take out a skinny Indian dude with a couple of fat guys and most definitly a out of shape truck driver thats hitting on his girl

Must have taken him a long time to look at the Earth-2 Superman logo and draw it.

I wonder what movie trailers will be attached to the Super Bowl this year. The Dark Knight Rises will be one of them, so hopefully a NEW trailer for TDKR and a teaser for Superman at the very least.

It's not a bad 'classic' S, but for a modern take on the design, I much prefer Alex Ross' S. It's so minimalist and simply looks like a shape, vs a specific font like most versions.

@redleaf That pic makes me finally except the fact that Superman will not have the red underwear on his suite. I've finally gave in and started liking the new look. I can't wait to see a trailer.

I actually like the suit, it's kind of a cross between the classic suit & that of the New 52.

@Sephiroth Agreed. Took a while for me to get used to the changes, but the more I saw of it, the more I liked it. It even looks good in 2D. I like it more than the DCnu costume.

No it just looks like a rinsed out version of the original that's no longer capable of getting clean in the wash!

Shite costume, shite Lois Lane, I'm only watching for the spectacle so lets hope Zack keeps up his usual end of the bargain and for crissake please have a decent soundtrack!

@ Sanderman Very well said, sir. I lol'd hardily.

I actually don't mind this costume too much. It's starting to grow on me, like a cold sore. =P

My only problem with it is, albeit a small one(giggity), is that they could've found a way to add the red underroos. Not make 'em look like panties and whatnot but, maybe having the costume where the underwear would be colored a dark red, blended into the blue itself. Just an idea I had, nothing too big tho(giggity).

Here's to hoping we see some major ass-kicking in this flick.

=P
