This week, we got confirmation that James Gunn and Peter Safran will remain on as DC Studios co-CEOs under the newly formed Skydance banner. The news followed the announcement that Paramount has been given the go-ahead to finalize its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with the deal expected to close on October 6.
A new Bloomberg report has revealed some more details on David Ellison's decision to allow Gunn and Safran to "keep doing what they're doing."
According to the outlet, the Skydance boss visited the set of Man of Tomorrow when it was filming earlier this year, and listened as the pair outlined their 10-year plan for the DCU. Evidently impressed, Ellison supported their strategy.
So, it'll be business as usual for the time being, although Bloomberg also confirms that Gunn and Safran’s contracts officially expire in April 2027. If Man of Tomorrow tanks at the box office (unlikely, but always a possibility), Ellison might well rethink his decision.
Gunn's Superman sequel is clearly going to be a massively important cog in the DCU wheel, and Jeff Sneider said he's heard "good things internally" about the movie during this week's episode of The Hot Mic.
The show's co-host didn't elaborate, but several other scoopers have shared similar reports.
Charles Murphy posted the following:
Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be a fairly jam-packed movie, with several other superheroes now confirmed to be joining the Man of Steel on his next big-screen adventure.
Though most are characters that were introduced in Superman (Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, etc.), James Gunn's DCU sequel will also feature the return of Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) and the big-screen debut of Lanterns' John Stewart (Aaron Pierre).
And, of course, there is a lot of speculation that Adria Arjona has been cast as Wonder Woman, not the villainous Maxima as the trades initially reported.
Arjona confirmed that she filmed her scenes when the movie was "wrapping up" during a recent interview, which may support the rumor that her character - be it Wonder Woman or Maxima - will only have a minor role to set up her next DCU appearance.
"Great experience. We had a nice, little dinner to celebrate. David was there, and Nick was there. I was just happy that it happened as the movie was wrapping up, so we could celebrate the moment, celebrate the movie, and celebrate the reunion with James and Peter. It was really fun."
The Andor star was also asked if she could say "three words" relating to her character that nobody will understand until they watch the movie.
"Well, look... I don't want to lie, but I also want to protect the audience's experience. So, it's a little dance that I'm learning to navigate, and it's hard. It's really hard. I almost got busted [earlier].
Oh my God! Everything that I say is like... I just thought of three, but I just got into the DC universe. I really don't want to get fired, so I'm gonna I'm gonna keep my mouth shut. Is that cool? I'm just so nervous. I'm like, "What?" I have three in my head, which are pretty good, and if I say them, people won't figure them out. But the people in charge will, and then I'm scared."
MOT will focus on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).
Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return.
Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
