UPDATE: Man Of Tomorrow Gets Positive Early Word; New Details On Ellison's Decision To Back 10-Year DCU Plan

According to a new Bloomberg report, David Ellison made the decision to back James Gunn and Peter Safran's 10-year plan for the DCU after paying a visit to the Man of Tomorrow set...

UPDATE: James Gunn has taken to Threads to confirm that he has completed an assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow, and never one to allow himself much of a break, the DC Studios co-CEO has already started working on his next DCU movie.

We're not sure what this mysterious project could be, but if Gunn is writing the script himself, there's a chance it's a new Justice League movie.

The filmmaker has also shared an X post hyping up tonight's season finale of Lanterns.

Original article follows.

This week, we got confirmation that James Gunn and Peter Safran will remain on as DC Studios co-CEOs under the newly formed Skydance banner. The news followed the announcement that Paramount has been given the go-ahead to finalize its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, with the deal expected to close on October 6.

A new Bloomberg report has revealed some more details on David Ellison's decision to allow Gunn and Safran to "keep doing what they're doing."

According to the outlet, the Skydance boss visited the set of Man of Tomorrow when it was filming earlier this year, and listened as the pair outlined their 10-year plan for the DCU. Evidently impressed, Ellison supported their strategy.

So, it'll be business as usual for the time being, although Bloomberg also confirms that Gunn and Safran’s contracts officially expire in April 2027. If Man of Tomorrow tanks at the box office (unlikely, but always a possibility), Ellison might well rethink his decision.

Gunn's Superman sequel is clearly going to be a massively important cog in the DCU wheel, and Jeff Sneider said he's heard "good things internally" about the movie during this week's episode of The Hot Mic.

The show's co-host didn't elaborate, but several other scoopers have shared similar reports.

Charles Murphy posted the following:

Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be a fairly jam-packed movie, with several other superheroes now confirmed to be joining the Man of Steel on his next big-screen adventure.

Though most are characters that were introduced in Superman (Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, etc.), James Gunn's DCU sequel will also feature the return of Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) and the big-screen debut of Lanterns' John Stewart (Aaron Pierre).

And, of course, there is a lot of speculation that Adria Arjona has been cast as Wonder Woman, not the villainous Maxima as the trades initially reported.

Arjona confirmed that she filmed her scenes when the movie was "wrapping up" during a recent interview, which may support the rumor that her character - be it Wonder Woman or Maxima - will only have a minor role to set up her next DCU appearance.

"Great experience. We had a nice, little dinner to celebrate. David was there, and Nick was there. I was just happy that it happened as the movie was wrapping up, so we could celebrate the moment, celebrate the movie, and celebrate the reunion with James and Peter. It was really fun."

The Andor star was also asked if she could say "three words" relating to her character that nobody will understand until they watch the movie.

"Well, look... I don't want to lie, but I also want to protect the audience's experience. So, it's a little dance that I'm learning to navigate, and it's hard. It's really hard. I almost got busted [earlier].

Oh my God! Everything that I say is like... I just thought of three, but I just got into the DC universe. I really don't want to get fired, so I'm gonna I'm gonna keep my mouth shut. Is that cool? I'm just so nervous. I'm like, "What?" I have three in my head, which are pretty good, and if I say them, people won't figure them out. But the people in charge will, and then I'm scared."

MOT will focus on the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) putting their differences aside and joining forces to defend the planet against Brainiac (Lars Eidinger).

Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Maria Gabriella de Faria (The Engineer) have all been confirmed to return.

Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

I expect their contract to get extended until July or August to see how the movie performs before they make a decision on keeping them long-term or not. I think this movie had a real chance at scoring big before Supergilr shit the bed.

Kahron0 - 10/3/2026, 3:23 PM
@TheJok3r - Why would Supergirl’s failure have any impact or effect on your opinion on Man of Tomorrow or how successful it may or may not be?

I’d understand if you had this stance if we got another DC Trinity spin off (like a Batgirl, Nightwing, Superboy, or Nubia movie) but not the sequel to the one movie that wasn’t a critical and commercial disaster
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/3/2026, 3:34 PM
@Kahron0 - I'm talking in terms of box office. I think the movie will be great, as Gunn is a good director. I personally want to see Superman succeed at the box office, so I hope it does well, I just think that Supergirl has hurt its chances.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/4/2026, 4:50 AM
@Kahron0 - Superman debatably broke even. Therefore Supergirl was the barometer for how successful it was in establishing a universe. Supergirl flopped. Man of Tomorrow will also flop. That's almost guaranteed at this point.
jst5
jst5 - 10/4/2026, 4:55 AM
@TheJok3r - That's not how deal like this work.Gunn's reps or Gunn would never agree to such a thing. The question here is why hasn't Gunn been extended after having not one but two private meetings with Paramount just this year if Paramount was all that thrilled with the product he would have already been extended.Paramount push for Reeves to get a deal with another streaming showing added...so clearly they are thrilled with that product.

What's happening is they'll see how MOT looks once the final movie is done(meaning once they get to see the final cut) and will start projections on how they think the movie will do and then will see what it does at the box and will either not offer Gunn a new deal or start looking for a new head of DC movies probably already have people in mind.

No matter what keeps being said on here Superman 2025 was not a profit hit at the box...we know that now even Netflix confirmed it.If MOT does the same box numbers...Paramount DC will have a new boss.I'll be very surprised if MOT does well enough at the box to pull in the profits that will earn Gunn a new deal...there is zero hype behind the DCU.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/4/2026, 5:10 AM
@jst5 - I agree with you for the most part, but Gunn will have to agree to some limited renewal to finish the movie, as his contract seemingly ends in April. I think MOT is likely dead on arrival thanks to Supergirl, as well as Superman being more on the generic side of the comic book movie spectrum. With that said, the movie is already done filming and is in post-production, so I think both Gunn and Skydance will wait and see how it does before making any major moves. Gunn is likely playing things smart right now, because if MOT somehow manages to surprise everyone at the box office, then he will have all the cards when it's time to renew his contract for real. Personally, I want to see Gunn finish a trilogy of these movies because Superman deserves to have a series end naturally for once instead of getting cancelled, but I really don't want him calling the shots at DC.

@ObserverIO - or supergirl just didn’t resonate with the audience and it was released at a dumb time, right between Toy Story and a new minions movie. Not everything is based off of the prior movie. Batman v Superman made a lot at the box office but didn’t really resonate with the audience and then justice leagues was a failure. Just saying there are too many variables to just say Superman 25 was bad and that’s why supergirl did bad. The first captain America movie did nothing special and then winter soldier was a hit. Really does depend.

jst5 - 10/4/2026, 9:53 PM
@TheJok3r - I hear you but the term of his contract would have included things for MOT meaning like doing work on it etc....the movie will be done by the time his contract is up though.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 10/4/2026, 11:40 PM
@jst5 - Except that Paramount can't actually finalize, let alone announce deals on behalf of DC or Warners yet. Not until the merger actually closes. Gunn having meetings with them would just be the preliminary negotiations. Man of Tomorrow has already filmed,. It only makes sense for Paramount to keep Gunn happy until that movie is finished and released. Unless, of course, Ellison takes a page from Zaslev's book and just throws it in the trash (which I highly doubt).
jst5
jst5 - 10/5/2026, 2:38 AM
@Patient2670 -They pushed to have Reeves a new deal that included another streaming show so they can 100% push for something if they want it.

Paramount isn't going to say much other than stay the course...no reason for them to say anything else at this point.Gunn's deal ends in 6 months with his movie coming out in 9 months and there isn't a single DCU project in the works post 2027.That says everything is on the table for where this could be headed.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/5/2026, 6:47 AM
@epc1122 - Winter Soldier therefore was a good barometer for how well Captain America The First Avenger was received. Also the Avengers ofc.
Patient2670
Patient2670 - 10/5/2026, 12:15 PM
@jst5 - They can push for or ask Warners for whatever they want, especially now, given that the merger has cleared all the hurdles. Still, Warner contracts can not legally be executed by the new owner until the deed is signed and keys turned over.

Warner Bros. may have made a new or extended deal with Reeves, but that would have been Warners, not Skydance. Reeves only sweetens the pot so that Skydance (or any other company, for that matter) wouldn't want to back out amidst all the lawsuits or bad press the merger has generated. Like him or not, James Gunn simply does not hold that same appeal, based on his track record with the studio thus far.

And yeah, there's no announced projects beyond 27, but that doesn't mean they're not developing, or even actively working on any, in the hopes that they end up moving forward as is.

So, yes, anything is possible, and both sides are more than likely preparing for every eventuallity. I'm sure Paramount has preemptively drawn up any contracts they want, but none hold water, again until the sale is official. Even though, at this point, we all know it will go through, it hasn't yet. And Paramount/Skydance won't have Gunn (or anyone else) sign contracts before that happens, because it opens them to the liability that if down the road, one oof those signees wanted to get out of or re-neg on the deal, they would have legal standing to say the contract was invalid or non-binding because it pre dated the date of ownership. It's a loophole, sure, but it's a very real one.

@TheJok3r - They are probably stuck with Gunn whether they like him or not. Rebooting the DCU again is a big decision. And his stuff has been alright so far. Not as good as his GotG trilogy but alright.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/5/2026, 2:02 PM
@Truebeliever333 - I think you can keep Gunn on as a director while having someone else take over DC and the decision making. Gunn is a proven director; he is someone you want on your team at any cost, but do you want him being in charge of the team ? honestly no.
epc1122
epc1122 - 10/5/2026, 2:08 PM
@ObserverIO - a lot of people use Batman v Superman as an example for being successful bc of the money it did at the box office, yet justice league made a lot less. Iron man 2 wasn’t as well received yet got an iron man 3. There’s nothing definitive with this.

I never doubted Gunn or Peter Safran unlike most of y'all in here.

You all may not like how it is going right now but give it a chance and then see what happens. Gunn just needs to not put his stamp on everything going on. Allow project leaders do their own thing and then he can make some adjustments to make sure that it all fits in correctly.

Evidence of that is Lanterns for example. Good show and they did things their own way.
