With all the news surrounding Zack Snyder taking the directorial reins for the upcoming Superman:The Man of Steel, speculation started once again that this may be the perfect time to "update" the famous red and blue look for Superman. This by no means, is a new, or novel idea. Every couple of years fans start clamoring about some sort of change or upgrade to the iconic look that none save Superman could get away with.

There has been more than one occasion in the past where DC has actually thought they should listen to the fans and quickly discovered that the cries they were answering were the cries of the minority. Every time they have attempted anything more than a minor tweak here and there, they have discovered that there were far more fans that were happy with the suit to begin with. Even the color and symbol tweaks for Superman Returns were met with disdain.

Having said this and listening to the CBM fans begin to roar for some kind of change, I decided to take a POLL here within the CBM community. It did not fail to bring about debate but in the end, with over 2,700 votes and more than a two to one margin, the voting speaks for itself.

POLL RESULTS...

should never change the iconic costume, take a look at smallville.

i know they're building up to the main outfit, but you can see all the mistakes on the way to it.

If its a good change, then it should happen. But his look is great the way it is.

But, i have always loved the variation suits he has worn for special runs in the books.

The Black suit with the White Symbol is one of my faves. Especially the one in Superman Doomsday, although i hate that damn movie.

Zombie: I have liked a few of his different suits over the years. I loved the blue and white "lightning" suit he wore for a time but as grif alluded to, he wasn't Superman. They should have created an entirely new character with that look and those powers.

Actually for the most part I agree with grif. I just couldn't recall who but I also remember someone here in CBM posted only Superman can get away with the red briefs.

But then again Gusto does have some pretty interesting concepts (Joke)!

I wouldn't mind a minor change or two but if they don't thats fine. Superman is one of the few Comic Book heroes that doesn't need to change his look.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE...
SUPERMAN'S SUIT IS MADE OF FABRIC FROM KRYPTON..

HAVE IT TO WHERE THE FABRIC ON CONTACT CONFORMS TO WHAT IT IS APPLIED ON MUCH LIKE THE TV SERIES FLASH COSTUME, THAT WAY YOU SEE ALL THE MUSCULATURE, THE DIPS AND WHAT, GIVING IT A TRUE COMIC LOOK, THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING NEW...
EXAMPLE: SEE HOW HIS SUIT LOOKS LMOST AS IF IT WAS POURD ONTO HIM?

EVEN THOUGH THROUGH THE YEARS MOST SUITS HAVE BEEN SKIN TIGHT, IT WOULD ONLY GIVE A HINT OF THE MUSCLES BUT NEVER THAT COMIC BOOK
DEFINED FULLY MUSCLED OUT LOOK...

Everyone knows Superman wears his costume under his street clothes. I have a question. Where does he keep his boots? =D

I wouldn't mind losing the red briefs. But as said the costume would be TOO blue. Maybe it could be explained that that's how kryptonians dress. We need a costume that seems alien & not earth made. Probably put some kryptonian symbols along the sleeves & pants leg. But keep the overall design.

The costume on the link before seems like the perfect alteration for me.

@ Superguy
Thanks for putting up the pic. I respect that the undies is part of history & it wouldn't bother me if they kept it. But don't you have the slightest feeling that the way these movies are shaping up in terms of more realsim & less camp, that there should be some logical explanation as to why undies?

@ GUNSMITH I agree, they have got to make the comic characters more defined for movie purposes Like the Flash suit. That’s what comic heroes are all about, standing out and LOOKING like they could stop a train or throw someone through a brick wall without breaking a sweat!

If they were to do that more with Superman it would be awesome and all the other characters. Take Spiderman for example, I know TM beefed up for the role but he still looked so puny in the suit and in the comics Spiderman looks really athletic and quite bulky for a small guy. Hope they make some subtle changes to the suit for the reboot to make Spidey look more defined.

I know not all actors are going to be able to get in “super” shape for the roles in the CBMs, e.g. Ian Mckellen as magneto, but for superman with all his power, whoever they get to play him, aswell as getting into some sort of decent shape, they also need to make the suit more visually convincing!!!

How many of you would be happy if the flag was changed? Or the national anthem, or something else that was just great in every way?

That's how I feel about Superman. He was the first, he will always be the best.

LOL! So you took the username I originally wanted!!!
I get the way u feel. I think Supes costume is 1 where no matter what decade, it's just so timeless. It's a great costume. As I said, the only change i'd accept is the removal of his undies.

The WORST thing they could do for a film on Superman in the 21st century is ignore things like The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Hancock, Iron Man, Heroes, No Ordinary Family, even Megamind – current interpretations and criticisms of the Superman legend, asking 'why' about many of Superman's details – if Superman is to remain a favorite, it must stand up to such scrutiny - not remain attached to boots, briefs and a cape.

Superman, at his center, is not about a pair of red briefs, and is not about a spit curl. He is about hope rising from despair, and seemingly impossible strength and integrity. The reasons they conveyed in 'Birthright' I thought was wonderful, for why Superman wears the colors he does – trust & hope. If there are good 'why's found for a present-day story of Superman, my childhood hero can be a resilient legend, rather than a fond moment of nostalgia.

To keep Superman relevant those driving the bus must question the secondary elements: like blue tights, a pair of glasses, the S symbol and penetrate to the core of 'why' we need Superman. This is why Batman and Spiderman have enjoyed such success commercially and critically, they stand up to today's children and their more skeptical palettes.

Superman's appearance back in 1938 was influenced by certain strongmen and heroes of the time, such as circus performers - and it made good sense. Back then that was a good reason to dress that way. Today we need better reasons for the certain dress Superman would choose to reveal himself in – I still get 'that feeling' of awe when I see the red cape, but that's because I was 2 when I saw him. Maybe there is good reasons for tight dress and a cape, but the way the story gets there must convince.

The Nolans had a function or reason for every thing Bruce Wayne put on in Batman Begins, and Superman must have that same solid path. Superman can basically do his thing naked, if he has those powers - so the reasons he appears in what he does and does what he does need to be solid, otherwise the gravity is just not there the way it is for Batman Begins.

Superman from my childhood wore red briefs - but the adult me would rather see Superman survive and thrive, than hold on to his underwear.

In a more "Realistic" version you could definitely get away with a suit like Guason posted as something like that look feasible for high speed travel, and it looks pretty sick.

Well said. BRAVO!!! There must be some reason he wears what he wears in modern times. Which is why I don't understand the HATE behind the X-men movies uniforms. They weren't the best, but they weren't as bad as people make them out to be.

@ Guason
Mmmmm...not realy liking the armoured look. But otherwise a gr8 look for superman. Loving the two shades of blue. Mayb a yellow belt buckle to separate the upper and lower torso as well

The Superman Returns look was a decent update. A more three dimensional look isn't a bad idea. The only thing that was wrong with that particular costume was the color tone. It was too dark, just like the movie.

Overall I am fairly pleased with the Poll results. Something as old as Superman is always going to have people holding onto the tradition. I understand those feelings I just don't share them.

To me Superman is bigger than his suit. For him to resonate with the modern era he needs to look the part.
