Smallville: Tom Welling - 2 of the 5 Most Influential Stars From the Show

To commemorate the impending release of Smallville: The Complete Series on DVD, Tom Welling did an interview with the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex to reflect on the five actors who had the most influence on him. What follows is a look at the first two.

"Even in the early days of the show, I approached it like I was in school and I was always going to be learning," Welling said. "Luckily, we got people through the door who were creative and highly talented and the environment on the set was always very collective and open and warm. And I learned a lot, more than I can even say, really."

John Glover
"As an actor, there's really nothing I can say that already hasn't been said. The way he was able to come in with lionel Luthor—who was, literally, not supposed to stay around long—and create so much, it was amazing. Whenever I was going to work with him, it really got me going. I knew it was always going to be interesting and great. I learned a great deal from him. He does a lot of homework before he gets to the set."

Michael Rosenbaum
"Michael Rosenbaum playing Lex was huge. A fan favorite in every way, of course. He taught me a lot about what to do but he also taught me a lot about what not to do. He's such a dynamic actor and has these great comedic sensibilities. He's a very different person than his character and his ability to jump in and out—literally at the snap of a finger—amazed me. It taught me that I don't work that way and it did it in a good way. I learned about what I needed to do."

OOH!! Are there any lost Dean Cain interviews where he talks about how Teri Hatcher influenced his hair choices in Lois and Clark??? Since we're on this theme of awful portrayals of Superman. Here's hoping!!

These clowns are what gave Superman the Boy Scout rep for years. Hope Cavill and Snyder dispel that image soon.

Loved the show. Watched the first episode when i was 12. Now me and my wife watch them all the time. Definitely not faithful to the source material, bad acting, and cheesy but i still love it.

Thanks for the heads-up Ed. Shame, I already got a few seasons on DVD, gonna finish collecting them. Can't see buying a new DVD all-in-one set.

And yes, if there is anyone Tom could have learned the most from, it would be Glover.

What morons. Don't you realize, Tom Welling had no control over whether he got to wear the suit. WB said it wouldn't happen because of Man of Steel. That's why we were cheated on the ending of the show. Smallville did the best it could, considering the circumstances. Tom Welling was happy to wear the suit and would have done things different if it was up to him. Don't let your hating baffle your brains.

Still. They had the best live action portrayal of Lex IMO.
