Asgard Takes Shape On THOR: RAGNAROK Set As Crew Members Give The Marvel Production Flak
We're not certain which of the nine realms this otherworldly set is meant to be, but check out the nearly-complete Thor: Ragnarok construction and see why some set workers aren't happy about it.
It’s been a month since Thor: Ragnarok began principal photography in Australia, and we’ve yet to see anyone in costume on the set… beyond Mark Ruffalo in his motion-capture suit. However, that may change very soon given construction on that huge (and oddly open) set, which is likely doubling for Asgard if not one of the other Nine Realms, is nearly complete. This might be great news for us and the cast, but with the set basically finished, some of the Aussies who worked on it have apparently been fired from the Marvel Studios production. But before we get into that, check out pics of the aforementioned otherworldly set below.
Well, over 100 employees were given termination notices this past week according to the Gold Coast Bulletin, and they were expecting to have work until October or November. One worker argues that crew members of New Zealand descent (like director Taika Waititi) were favored over locals: “There’s quite a lot of antagonism about how the New Zealand crew is being well looked after and seem to be in charge of a lot of main jobs.” Another said, “I came back from Europe for this job and was told I’d have at least six months’ work. I got a week’s notice and haven’t had time to organize work. I’ve got a mortgage and kids to feed. They’ve looked after their own and it’s the locals who have all suffered.”
In defense of the Thor: Ragnarok team, Australian Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk stated, “What we have seen is that the stage for Thor has been completed and those jobs are finished.” She continued, “As the construction comes to an end, what we will see is more jobs when actors come in. I don’t have any concerns. I’m very satisfied.”
Obviously, this is nothing that should concern us here Comic Book Movie, but don’t be surprised if this garners some type of response from Marvel or director Taika Waitit. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed for set photos of Chris Hemsworth’s new look as the God of Thunder, or Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief, or any cast member in a costume!
Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi, and it stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Sir Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Karl Urban (Skurge), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), with Jeff Goldblum (Grandmaster) and Cate Blanchett (Hela). And Thor: Ragnarok is set to open in theaters on November 3, 2017.
