Taika Waititi Now Hints At Smarter ‘HULK’ In THOR: RAGNAROK & INFINITY WAR?

When HitFix sat down with Taika Waititi at the Sundance Film Festival to discuss his new film Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok eventually became the topic of discussion. This time, the director was first asked about the likeliness of Mark Ruffalo’s Incredible Hulk becoming more intelligent when he returns in the 2017 threequel. “It's interesting, because at the moment, there’s a big conversation that’s happening about how far to push that,” Waititi explained. “Whether or not The Hulk should be [verbal/conscious].”

In light of rumors that the Planet Hulk/ World War Hulk story arc will be incorporated into Thor: Ragnarok, it makes sense the Jade Giant would be more verbal and conscious when he reunites with the God of Thunder. However, Waititi implies Marvel really wants to go that route with Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War. “I think a lot of those conversations have more to do with what’s going to come up in future movies,” the director teased. “So I think a lot of those decisions are larger group decisions, rather than anything to do with just me or the writer. They have a lot of stuff that they have to consider. But I do think that’s the best way to track it. I think we all want that. I think we all want to see that development and the evolution of that character. I also think you can do it in a fun way.”

Also during this interview, Taika Waititi was asked once again about the God of Mischief, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, and whether or not the Thor franchise needs the supervillain. “He’s such a big part of it,” he said. “And he's such a great part of it. My focus really is making sure that Thor is the best character, though.” When it was mentioned that making the Thunder God the best character is something Marvel has yet to do, Waititi laughed before adding, “Yeah, well that is my goal! Because he’s got to be. And it should be that way.”

Make the jump to HitFix to find out how Taika Waititi is transitioning from indie films to blockbuster movies, how he compares himself to Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn, and also how much creative control he has on Ragnarok. What do you think? Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, Mark Ruffalo, with Cate Blanchett and Anthony Hopkins, Thor: Ragnarok is set for release November 3, 2017.
