THOR: RAGNAROK Star Cate Blanchett Closes Deal To Play Lilith In Eli Roth's BORDERLANDS Movie

It was recently reported that Cate Blanchett was in talks to play one of the leads in Eli Roth's big-screen adaptation of Gearbox Software & 2K's Borderlands video game, and she's now officially on board.

The surprising news that none other than Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok, The Lord of the Rings) was in talks to play one of the leads in Cabin Fever director Eli Roth's adaptation of Gearbox Software and 2K's Borderlands video game hit earlier this month, and we now have confirmation that the Academy Award-winner has signed on to star.

Lionsgate made the news official via press release, confirming that Blanchett will play one of the story's main protagonists, Lilith, who "is one of only six women in the galaxy that belong to the powerful “siren” class, wielding incredible, superhuman powers."

You may think Blanchett signing on for an Eli Roth project is an odd move, but the pair actually worked together already on 2018's The House with a Clock in its Walls.

Borderlands is a somewhat bizarre and very violent first-person, loot-based shooter which focuses on four “Vault Hunters” fending off local marauders while searching for advanced alien tech on a planet called Pandora. There have been three games released so far, and all have done very well. Borderlands 3 hit shelves last September and has already sold 8 million copies.

This big-screen take is being developed at Lionsgate and will work off a script from Chernobyl screenwriter Craig Mazin. Roth will also produce along with Avi and Ari Arad through their Arad Productions banner.

What do you guys make of this news? Do you think Blanchett is a good fit for Lilith? Let us know in the usual place.

She was good in that one movie.

Who am I kiddin', she's good in most of her movies I'm sure. Only say most cause I haven't seen them all. Most actors have a dud.

@MosquitoFarmer - Yeah that dud may be this Borderlands movie, Eli Roth has never made a good film. I'm worried he may permanently bury this franchise for video game lovers too.

@mastakilla39 - It's odd, because I think Roth has a lot of potential and interesting concepts, and I still enjoy watching his movies every once and awhile but...

@MosquitoFarmer - I’ve always looked at Roth as the poor man’s Sam Raimi.

I haven't really played any Borderlands game, but with the cast and crew involved with this I am pretty interested in this

And damn, for a moment i thought she was back as Hela...smdh.
Loved her in that movie!

For a moment i thought they were gonna use Hela instead of Death (which is absolutely haram in the MCU) but alas...they actually changed Thanos' characater.

One day...

@TheJustinHammer
Don't get me wrong, i love what they did with Thanos (Ra's al Ghul IS my favorite Bat-villain after all!) but i still regret not seeing that character.

One could always change the plot but still play with certain key comicbook characters.

I don't see Eli Roth pulling this off. Borderlands relies heavily on its art aesthetic, infusion of pop culture and off-the-wall characters. I didn't see Roth's last movie, but I don't consider him a visually stylistic director or a character director. I place him a few pegs above Uwe Boll on the talent scale. He's almost average. We've seen better actors with better directors in videogame movies that tanked.

@bs77 - Same here. I've always imagined someone like Robert Rodriguez pulling off a Borderlands flick.

Eli Roth?

Dude is an unoriginal hack of a director.

Everyone ragging on Roth, but no one is mentioning Lionsgate and especially Avi Arad? How the guy still has a job baffles me. This movie is DOA, which is unfortunate.
