THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER - Chris Hemsworth Explains Thor's Complicated Relationship With Mjolnir & Stormbreaker

In Thor: Ragnarok, Hela effortlessly destroyed Mjolnir and left the God of Thunder without a hammer. The hero would learn that he didn't need the weapon to channel the thunder, but when Thanos attacked, he enlisted Eitri to create Stormbreaker. The axe is both immensely powerful in battle and helps transport Thor across the cosmos, but, well, it's not Mjolnir.

Thor: Love and Thunder will piece the shattered hammer together again when Jane Foster's Mighty Thor wields it in the Odinson's place.

Clips from the movie have suggested that Thor's not overly happy about that, leading to some awkwardness between him and Stormbreaker. At the global press conference for the blockbuster this past Friday, we asked Chris Hemsworth what he enjoyed most about exploring his character's complicated feelings for his two hammers.

The question was one the actor clearly had some fun with, and both Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Taika Waititi also chimed in. It sounds to us like this will be a highlight in Thor: Love and Thunder, though which hammer the Asgardian will end up with remains to be seen.

We've seen in clips that Thor is keen to regain Mjolnir, so what did you enjoy most about exploring the God of Thunder's complicated relationship with his two hammers?

Hemsworth: [Laughs] That was kind of one of the funniest things we got to do in the film. I can't talk about it too much. Can we talk about it? Kevin?

Feige: Yes.

Hemsworth: Yes, we can. Look, it's hard. His ex-girlfriend shows up dressed as him. That's a shock. All of a sudden, the weapon he held so dear for so many years now belongs to somebody else. Then, he has Stormbreaker who starts to sense...there's a little jealousy there [Laughs]. It evolved through the film. I don't think it was in the original script, but it was fun.

Waititi: With Stormbreaker, I don't know if this is the way everyone else thought about it, but you've got to remember that Stormbreaker is made of Groot's arm. Groot was a teenager when he did that, so we felt like Stormbreaker was a young weapon. It had only been born five or six years ago, so it had to feel like an adolescent going through changes and having mood swings.

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
