Last night's full trailer for Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder gave us our first proper look at Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor in action, and we now have two new official stills featuring the returning Jane Foster suited-up.

The first, via Total Film, puts the hero in the forefront with Chris Hemsworth's Odinson donning his updated costume in the background, while Fandango's image finds the former lovers face-to face for the first time in... well, depends which one you ask!

Check out both stills below.

During an interview with Total Film, director Taika Waititi confirmed that his Ragnarok sequel will take inspiration from Jason Aaron’s comics when it comes to Jane's arc. "We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane... because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that."

Despite speculation that Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) might put an end to him in Love and Thunder, Waititi also seemed to suggest that this won't be the last time we see Hemsworth's Thor in The MCU.

"And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else," he added. "It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’... I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case."

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters July 8, 2022.

Yeah, I hope it's not just a "passing on of the torch" story either.

BTW here they come!

@dracula - It was confirmed already, wasn't it? Pretty sure I read it somewhere.

Good. The trailer looked fun, but to brush off that darker storyline would be a disservice to the character.

@ModHaterSLADE - Remember the 1st scene from GoTG? My guess is it's something like that.

@Fogs - Yeah, I doubt he'll go in too deep with it given how laid back most of the MCU is.

@ModHaterSLADE - MCU is normally lighthearted yes, but it normally doesn't shy away from tackling heavier subjects now and then. Two very recent and good examples are Moon Knight (e.g. parent/child abuse, dissociative disorder...) and Doctor Strange 2 (e.g. depression, mother's loss of their children). It's all about how you handle it.

There is no way Mighty Thor isn't a variant. She is not the 616 Jane Foster. I'm calling it now.

That having been said, I'm down for this. I want this so much. Let's let this be a good time for everyone involved. Including the people pushing the M-she-U thing. I just want to enjoy this picture. Don't you?

@AvisQuinn - idk. If they’re sticking to the cancer storyline it makes me think it’s main Jane. This will make us care for an iteration that’s been a bore so far

@AvisQuinn - She is the Jane from Thor 1 and 2, Taika already confirmed it.
Enough with the variant BS, which is an excuse for lazy writting.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Completed agree with this. I hate the variant nonsense, personally. That's part of why I had a strong dislike for MoM.

Good. She’s not really Jane Foster without it

From an outsider's perspective, I believe that the Jane story and th Gorr story should've been two seperate movies entirely.

It would allow them to delve deeper into both characters. Can they execture the struggles and journey's of both Jane and Gorr in the span of two hours and do them justice?

I hope so. We'll see when the movie comes out.

@AmazingFILMporg - the Stones seem to damage everyone they come in touch with that can't handle their power. Monica is angry with Carol for some reason about her mom and its likely cancer from being exposed to a Stone. Tony and Banner basically had the effects of radiation mutation/burns on their arms/body. Whatever radiation they emit causes cancer.

Jane's cancer, her becoming Thor, Gorr and Odinson's unworthiness are all pretty connected with each other, but i reckon Taika only scratched the surface of it...

Odin willing, it will be a blast.
