BOX OFFICE: TRANSFORMERS 4 Expected To Beat CAPTAIN AMERICA 2's Opening

The fourth live-action Transformers film will make its debut June 27th, and it appears as though interest in the Michael Bay-directed franchise has not waned all that much, if at all. The Hollywood Reporter reports, "Those with access to tracking suggest the fourth installment in the action franchise will cross $100 million in its North American debut, besting the $95 million debut of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April."

This isn't the first time we've heard reports of a 2014 on track to best the domestic opening of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but all of them came up short. Godzilla came the closest with $93.1M. The rest of the top 2014 openings were from: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with $91.6M, X-Men: Days of Future Past with $90.8M and Maleficent with $69.4M.

Alright, so Transformers 4 will supposedly make over $100M, but how does that compare against the three previous Transformers films? The first Transformers opened in July of 2007 with $70.5M. The third film in the franchise, Dark of the Moon, opened in June of 2011 with $97.8M. Revenge of the Fallen had the best opening in the franchise with $108.9M in June of 2009.  Keep in mind, even if Transformers: Age of Extinction's domestic numbers come up short of these lofty tracking numbers, THR states, "It's also destined to do huge business internationally."

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION is the fourth film in director Michael Bay’s global blockbuster franchise. Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, Li Bingbing , Kelsey Grammer, Sophia Myles, T. J. Miller, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor and Titus Welliver star. The film begins after an epic battle that left a great city torn, but with the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history… while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world.

TRANSFORMERS 4 will be directed by Michael Bay, from a script written by Ehren Kruger. The cast includes: Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammar, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci and Jack Reynor. Set for release on June 27th, 2014!
