The 10 Most Confusing Things in 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'

The 10 Most Confusing Things in 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" made over $200 million last week. What it didn't make, however, was one lick of sense. (WARNING: contains spoilers)

Editorial Opinion
By mounted88 - Jun 30, 2009 08:06 PM EST

1. In "Transformers," there was this giant battle in the middle of downtown Los Angeles -- excuse me, Mission City -- that was witnessed by thousands of people at the very least. But somehow the government was able to cover up the whole thing, and now the existence of alien robots is just an internet rumor? How did they do it? Pay off everyone who was there and quickly fix millions of dollars in damage? Also, didn't Keller (Jon Voight) go on TV and tell everyone we were being attacked by "a technological civilization far superior to our own"? How did they spin that?

2. There are two pieces of the Allspark cube left: the military has one under lock and key, and Sam discovers another. The Decepticons steal one and bring Megatron back to life. But when Sam (Shia LaBeouf) wants to bring back Optimus, he has to find the Matrix of Leadership on the other side of the globe. Why not use the other piece? Mikaela (Megan Fox) has it in her backpack the whole time. It brought his kitchen appliances to life, why can't it do the same for Optimus?

3. Speaking of Megatron's rebirth, when the Decepticons venture deep into the ocean to revive him, the Navy crew tracking them reads five contacts. When they get down there, they tear apart one of the robots for parts to rebuild Megatron. Then as they rise to the surface, the same Navy guys say they spot six contacts. The little "Doctor" robot popped out down there, but he's about a third of the size of a person. Would he have shown up on sonar?

4. That reminds me: even if I were to forgive the Doctor's German accent -- and director Michael Bay is asking me to forgive a lot of ridiculous accents -- why would a robot need glasses? He has little lenses that flip in front of his mechanical eyes. Couldn't he just get his eyes adjusted? You'd think with all the laser guns, someone could perform a Lasik procedure.

5. Apparently, Transformers can look like people now. How? And how is it that even though the robo-girl (Isabel Lucas) is made of metal, she can still straddle Sam without crushing him. And if Bumblebee knows something's wrong with her, why does he spit antifreeze at her instead of telling Sam? Yes, his voicebox is broken, but wasn't it fixed at the end of the last movie?

6. The Fallen is the last of the Primes, since they all sacrificed themselves to stop him from destroying the sun. But then he says that Optimus is a descendant of the Primes. First, Transformers have kids? And second, how could he descend from them if they were all dead? And if the Fallen could only be destroyed by a Prime, why didn't the originals just gang up on him back in the day? And what makes Optimus so special, anyway? Megatron beat him earlier, but all it takes is a few spare parts from creaky old Jetfire for him to take out the Fallen?

7. Sam, Mikaela, and Simmons (John Turturro) go to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. to find Jetfire. Then they walk out the back onto a wide open field with old planes and mountains in the distance. When did the National Mall start to look so much like to Tucson, AZ (where they really filmed that scene)?

8. The geography is just as bad when they go to Egypt. The stone city of Petra in Jordan is over 250 miles away, over mountainous terrain, with few paved roads and the Israeli border between them, so how can they drive from one to the other in a couple of hours. And the Pyramids are said to be shooting distance from the Mediterranean, but they are actually well over 80 miles inland. Even if the Navy ship had a secret rail gun, and even if the captain would take an order to fire from a former agent of a government branch that no longer exists (over a walkie-talkie that inexplicably starts working again), how could it hit a moving target from that distance?

9. Sam briefly dies and goes to Robot Heaven. Robot Heaven?!?!

10. Where does Sam's bandage come from? What about his extra sock? Why does Sam's roommate not contribute anything at all? What was the Fallen doing for those thousands of years Megatron was frozen in ice? How does one satellite receive transmissions from everywhere on the planet? Why does Wheelie hump Mikaela's leg? Why do we have to see John Turturro's thong? Why are robots who join together to become Devastator also seen fighting the Army at the same time? Why does the government want only our military fighting Decepticons when our weapons seem unable to make so much as a dent on any of them? Why did the ancient Egyptians build a pyramid around the sun-destroying machines instead of just breaking it? Why is the Matrix of Leadership bigger in the Fallen's hand than in Sam's? And how do Mikaela's pants stay so clean?

i agree with Duckfish

plus i think too many people try to over think this movie, and they end up not enjoying it, and nitpicking at random details. which is a shame, cause if you just turn off your brain and watch it for fun, its easily enjoyable.

Yea and you forgot the transformer,Long Haul, that forms into devastors green right leg was also on the ground shooting at the autobots in the egypt last battle scene at the same time. i guess he has the teleporter technology too.

@krazed, theres like 10-12 constructions sharing the same set of designs(as they crashed, soundwave sends them prescanned earth modes) thats why you see multiples of each constructicon.

they didnt explain it in the movie(which the really should have to avoid confusion) but the idea was in the books and comic, so it kinda ties up that loose end

@quagmire, no need to get hostile, i don't understand why people get upset and flustered at others for enjoying a film. i mean calm down you sound like a scorned fanboy. don't be mad at me because you were beyond being able to get in touch with your inner child and just enjoy this, i guess we all lose that ability as we get older.

and im not starting anything but your a douche bag(and also probably a troll). and obviously have some inner struggle if you projecting your angers with a movie onto others.

also who thinks of these idiotic question("Where does Sam's bandage come from? What about his extra sock? ") during a movie? some one whose nitpicking

EDIT: after reading some posts from Quagmire, he is a scorned fanboy whose always negative. "boo hoo, zach snyder changed the end of watchmen", or this gem: "if your a real fan of watchmen you won't like this movie". which by the way i bet i'm more of a watchmen fanboy then you'll ever be (i wrote a 7 page philosophical dissertation on it), and i enjoyed it because ZS actually captured many of the philosophical ideas of the comic. i don't want to see an exact adaptation on screen, because then i know what happens and i'm not surprised.

and now i wish to extend to you an invitation to a message board i participate at, i think you'd fit right in, its a break off group from the TDK IMDB boards:http://darkparadise.createforum.net/index.php

Um... as far as #2 goes, the Allspark was used to being JetFire back to life in the museum.

#3, just because they rip one apart doesn't mean he died. There was 5 going down, no Megatron, 6 when he's brought back.

#1 Keller wasn't on the news and said that, he was addressing the government agencies.

#2 Sam and them did not know it brought Megatron back.

#3I kinda agree on that one

#4 It was part of his microscope disguise?

5 In the tie ins and novels the girl is actaully a Disneyland animatronic, that Leo (the roommate) Saw on TV and went to tell Sam. That is why he rushed into the room and said "Hey Sam your little bed buddy is AWWW!" he screamed when he saw the robo tounge of doom

6 Yes Transformers can have descendants, it was in the comics.

7 I don't know

8 The Transformers are super advanced aliens and can move faster than average cars. And a Railgun is rediculously fast, it could be fired from the Moon and hit a moving plane on Earth

9. His mind was a repository for all of the Allsparks knowledge, giving him a link to the Primes Sparks.

10 I will answer these later.

the prime's have to be brought back only by the matrix right?
Macksimus
Macksimus - 6/30/2009, 11:18 PM
Here are my questions...

I agree with all of yours btw.

1. Where does Megatron fly to in outer space? Is that the moon, mars, or cybertron.

2. Why didn't the Fallen do anything in Transformers or at least the beginning of this movie? Was he disabled or something? What caused him to just get up all of the sudden?

3. ...and I could have sworn that they mention that there were "primes" located all over the world at various locations (ala Jetfire in that museum). So, is Jetfire a Prime too. I thought all the primes were destroyed. What ever, this was all freaking confusing. Nothing made sense to me.

4. ...and how did Simmons know there was a ship in the med/Red Sea or whatever with the rail gun??? I guess he got lucky.

This movie was complete nonsense, and I'm pretty accepting of mindless summer blockbuster.

JMHO

THEHAWK - 6/30/2009, 11:33 PM
@Macksimus

2 He was biding his time?

3 No Wheelie said they were Old Ones or Ancients, but definately not Primes.

4 Simmons said if they had a battleship equipued with an experimental rail gun he didn't know they did, but guessed correctly
JD22
JD22 - 6/30/2009, 11:33 PM
@ macksimus.
1- its mars, its not said but this explains why they were there in the first one (when they destroy the rover), their ship the Nemesis crashed there

2- not sure if its mentioned but starscream i think found the fallen when he ventured back to Cybertron after the first film.

3- they didnt call them primes they were just the first wave of transformers to come to earth.

4- mindless plot hole? not really sure, probably luck

a lot of the minor details they left out (but included in the books, comics, etc) should have been included to make these things clearer,it was lazy writing.

This shit pisses me off, dip shits like Quagmire will go on and on about how stupid people are for liking this movie, and not thinking while watching it, then when they spout off about all of the errors it turns out that they just failed to comprehend the obvious(#3 being the most blatant example)

1.Only people that were there would believe it that it was real, to everyone else it would be just like any other viral campaign or conspiracy theory.

2.Sam's piece was used to revive Jetfire.

3.Megatron did not swim down to revive himself, but he did swim up after having been revived.

4.Even someone with 20/20 vision benefits from magnification at some point, his model just didn't have electronic zoom being as it was a microscope.

5.Looks like the explanation was cut from the film. You have no idea how much she weighed though, nor do you know that Bumble Bee has the ability to identify Transformers, if you'll notice the Twins did not know they were surrounded by Constructicons later in the film.

6.We don't know what makes a Prime a Prime, this is classic example of nit picking based on evidence-less preconception. The Fallen was Centuries old, Optimus was young and suped up.

7.Although, there is no airplane graveyard at any of them, their are three branches of the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, it was a leap, just like "Mission City" having one next to a graveyard.

8.Geography is regularly flubbed in movie, but this one seems like a legit issue, but the shooting of Devastator is not, he was not a moving target, he was posted up on top of a pyramid when he was shot with a mythical gun.

9.He was revived by the Matrix, he talked to the Primes whose memory was preserved in it.

10.The room mate did contribute, he is how Sam met up with Turturro's character. The rest are just stupid whiny bullshit.

Jetfire was not a Prime, he was just one of the old guard sent to Earth.

Okay WTF is with people going on and on about people liking this movie being stupid. People are allowed to have an opinion, I'm sure there are things you like that other people don't. Does that make you stupid, childish or any other pathetic insult you can come up with?

Was there not an article about the script and something to do with the writers strike? Could be the reason some of you think there's no story but the action is still kick ass. And again everyone is allowed to have their own opinion on M.B, but the numbers don't lie, I would like to see what kind of transformers movie some of you could write and direct, since you all know so much more than the professionals.

Explanations sound good to me haha! I enjoyed the film, maybe a little more than the first since there was more transformers interacting with transformers in this one besides epic fights. Might not be the smartest or best explained movie ever, but who cares? great action flick.

also @HarrisonBergeron #8 the railgun isn't mythical, just pop over to youtube and you can see the naval tests shots for it. (It's not as awesome as the movie made it)

This is way late but yes BatmanKnight, the Matrix of Leadership is a terrible name. It was however a part of the 1986 Transformers animated movie. I assume Michael Bay's inclusion of the matrix was his attempt to please hardcore fans...too bad he makes such bad movies. If I were 12, this movie would have been Citizen Kane.

On Number 7. They aren't at the Air and Space Museum on the mall in actual D.C. There is an additional museum in a hangar attached to Dulles Airport. That's the one they were at.

The giant double doors that Jetfire knocks down open onto runway in reality I think, since the doors were used to get the excellent variety of aircraft into the hangar for display.

If you like aircraft from many generations it's worth a visit.
RaxusPrime
RaxusPrime - 7/1/2009, 1:02 AM
that is a lot of questions man. as far as Devastator goes and the constructicons. They are basically two different things which kind of pisses me off. The constructicons kinda cloned themselves for a lack of terms and then Devastator started to form. He is basically a giant robot made out of vehicles and not other constructicons.
harrisonefreeman
harrisonefreeman - 7/1/2009, 1:20 AM
HarrisonBergeron, I am sorry we share names, your counter explanations make little to no sense. Here is my ridiculous response to your ridiculous response:

1. Based on your logic, only observers believe events happen. So ,logically, we can assume that only the people in and around the Twin Towers believe they were attacked, or, only people who fought in Viet Nam believe there was actually a war, or the moon landing or the holocaust...you see my point.

2. Yes Sam used his piece of the cube to revive Jetfire, but why didn't he just bypass the revival of an old transformer and just try to bring Optimus back to life?

3. Let me clarify because I do not think you understood this one. It's like a 5th grade word problem. 5 decepticons swim to the bottom of the ocean. 1 decepticon is used for scrap (minus 1) to rebuild megatron (plus1) so the problem is 5-1+1 which of course equals 5. But the radar says 6. This is bad math. But I think the answer is that the scrapped decepticon was only partially disassemble and was able to return with everyone else. At least this is my educated guess.

4. Robots do not have "20/20" vision. They are not humans. Given all the amazing things we have to believe to make this story work, I agree, it is ridiculous that a robot would need glasses. It was purely an aesthetic choice and a bad one at that.

5. I kind of agree with this one.

6. I'm pretty sure "evidence-less" is not a word. It is true we don't know where Transformer babies come from...or do we? Weren't there weird hatchling things in the Fallen's lair area? Either way, speaking of preconceptions, how do you know how old or souped up Optimus Prime is?

7. There are several branches of the Smithsonian, but none of them are in Arizona. Also, in several shots in this museum, we see the "Enola Gay" which has been on display at the Smithsonian, but (provided the internet is not lying) the Enola Gay is currently being stored in Arizona....soooooooo

8. I agree, this geographical mistake is legit. I also agree somewhat with that fact that devastator was not a "moving target," what I don't agree with is the term "mythical gun." I don't think mythical is the adjective you are looking for. Fictional perhaps.

9. How do you know Sam was "received" by the Matrix? Even if this is so, it is about as cheesy as robot heaven. But, seeing as how the Matrix was all dust at the time Sam fake died, I don't see how it could have received him.

10. The room mate did bring Sam and Simmons back together, however this is something that the magic of writing could have fixed without the annoying room mate plot device.

JD22
JD22 - 7/1/2009, 1:46 AM
with #2 in both movies sam is NEVER told that the piece of the allspark could bring one of them back to life, so how would he know to use it?

hes only first told about it to 'reactivate' jetfire, then its gone.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 7/1/2009, 2:36 AM
DennisW22 and HarrisonBergeron, you to are complete and total... ah I'm just shittin' ya. I could not agree more with either of you on this subject. DennisW22, superb handling of Quagmire, who yet again proves his mind is his namesake. I have a few more answers though:

To whoever wrote this:

1. People laugh about the FEMA coffins and Northwoods. You think the entire world is supposed to believe a martian robot attack on a single city with no more occurrences and the one politician who said something on live TV. That's why he isn't Secretary of Defense anymore. He was clearly suffering from some severe mental illness forcing him to resign. As for the damage, that was some Muslim terrorist cell... get the hint.

2. Like several have pointed out, it was used to revive Jetfire.

3. They take a leg from the expendable bot, much to his surprise it seemed, but that would hardly kill him. Starscream is seen at one point in the movie carrying his own severed arm and reattaching it onscreen just for reference.

4. As far as the accents involving ALL of the Transformers, in the first one, Prime said they downloaded our language from the internet. As sentient beings, they would most likely adopt vocalizations pleasing to them. As for the lenses, I suspect them to be allowing him to change visible spectrum's most likely, though it be a seemingly inefficient way.

5. In regards to her looking human, this may just be a [frick] you from Bay himself for all the griping about the robots not looking human enough in part one. I think Bumble Bee was more disgusted by the thought of Sam cheating on Mikaela, not that he sensed a Decepticon.

6. In the comics there were 13 Primes created by Primus to protect the universe from his evil twin Unicron. The Fallen betrayed his creator and became an Acolyte of Unicron. The movie said there were only 5(or 6 I can't remember exactly) but I remember in the animated movie that Prime passed on his role and title as a Prime when he died. Though the Matrix of Leadership was used to do so in this instance. Also, when Primus created the Primes and the first transformers, he gave them his Matrix, in the comics, which served the same purpose. Wasn't addressed in the movie, but wasn't ruled out.

7. Never been to any of the Smithsonian branches. No comment.

8. Geography is a bit off I give you that, but in regards to a the Railgun taking out Devastator... that is perfectly pheasable and totally within the realm of our reality. Railguns use massive amounts of electricity, 30+ Megajoules actually, to create intensely strong magnetic fields to propel a non explosive conductive metal slug, typically aluminum. This slug waighs about 8 lbs and immediately reaches mach 8 upon leaving the rails. The shear velocity allows for an enormous flight time with pinpoint accuracy and could easily hit targets 220 miles away... if you'd google the world 'railgun' you would know this.

9. Your assuming there is a 'Heaven' of any sort to begin with, this is another instance of reactive conditioning, you see afterlife, you think heaven. In the books, Unicron and Primus could enter the Astral Plane, as well as a few Primes. Sam had an out of body experience.

10. His under-shirt. He stole his roomies. He leads Sam to Simmons. Searching for Megatron and the Allspark, duh. It was a U.S. military defense satellite. Wouldn't you? To remind you not to wear one. Multiple pre-scanned Transformers, like in the books. Cause our our government is retarded(yea I said it). LMAO, you just stated even modern tech barely hurts the Decepticons, I guess the Egyptians could have asked the Sun-god to help them with it, but that would be too showy. It reformed from dust, what more do you want. She sprayed them with Pam!

Booyah!

teabag, Transformers is your favorite film? Sorry. I was simply responding to the thread which was in essence a picking apart of the film...sooooo I thought that's what we were doing here. As for the 'not having any idea about transformers' thing... I thought it was obvious that I was speaking more from a writing standpoint than a nerd semantic point of view. I think everyone here knows Transformers aren't real and if they were, they would probably get a comprehensive health insurance package that included vision, especially if they are government employees. Last thing-telling to "just enjoy the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" doesn't work if the movie is a piece of shit. I can suspend disbelief and forgive plenty of cheesiness but some things go above and beyond...

OH! This looks like fun! My turn! :D

1: A technological civilization does not need to be "alien". Maybe the Koreans have been hiding something away for a long, long time. I don't remember this scene from the first one, so if this doesn't do you, see TheMyth's reason.

2: It can, but it was used on Jetfire.

3: I thought the sixth signal represented Megatron, I thought they noticed it after he moved out of the rubble. I could be wrong. If so, you are already watching a tiny robot alien, that came out of another robot alien, resurrect a third robot alien, and you're worried about the sonar.

4: Jetfire explains they age just like the rest of them, and being on Earth, it isn't like they can just go down to the auto-parts store and pick up a new pair of eyes. Outside of any "mystical" forces (i.e. Cube, Matrix, etc), repairs are limited, and still dependant upon a repairman's (such as Ratchet) abilities. Besides, God forbid they use humanesque physical characteristics to define a character.

5: Well they already have a mini-civilization on Mars, no telling what all they have come up with up there. And Bumblebee doesn't know anything is wrong with her, he is just being a dick because Sam is "cheating" on Mikeala. No, it only worked for a bit, kind of like that old TV that the picture is fuzzes, but you smack it and it works. Sam explains he is still having trouble with it.

6: He was to powerful to stop in his younger days, but eventually he could be stopped, and when done, it would have to be a Prime (or descendant thereof). It's not just the parts that give Prime power, it was Jetfire's ancient spark. If you have the body of a God, but the spirit of a stoner, you don't expect a whole lot do you? Same works vice versa, Jetfire has a powerful spirit (spark) but an old body. Put it in Prime and watch the Eff out!

7: I don't remember why the air field, I will still give this question a shot... When giant living robots fell to Earth... Really? Time cut? Space bridge? Any of the above?

8: Because if the movie took a 7 hour interlude for their road trip you would be really pissed. Time cut?
If the Navy did develop a secret rail gun to take out a GIANT RACE OF FLYING ROBOTS would you rather it be developed to be shot at point blank range after asking him to please stand still while you aim?

9: I thought it was an implanted memory from the shock of the Allspark fragment. Not so much he died and went to "Heaven" but activated a copied version of the ancient's personalities.

10: Ok seriously, at this point this has been waaaay more than 10 confusing things, but #10 here really pushed it over the edge, but here we go.
*takes in a deep breath*

Time Cut.

Time Cut.

Sometimes your leg falls asleep and you just have to drag that limp f***er around.

Having Starscream give him "botjobs" all day. Serously... He is an "evil master-mind", they like to plot things for a very, very long time.

Soundwave gave it some Red Bull.

Micheal Bay and Robert Orci have a childish sense of humor.

See above.

They aren't, those are separate bots.

Ever seen how the government reasons things?

Because they really thought it brought the desert together. Seriously, how would you go about destroying massively powerful robot tech when all you got are rocks and sticks?

It came from dust, it's obviously screwy to begin with. Be glad Bay and Orci didn't shape it like a wang.

Tide On The Go.
