AMC has announced that The Walking Dead anthology series Tales of The Walking Dead will premiere summer 2022. The main show ends next year, of course, but this six-episode one-hour drama will feature both new and returning characters from The Walking Dead; Channing Powell will serve as showrunner and is expected to work closely with "Walking Dead Universe" CCO Scott M. Gimple.
"The Walking Dead is a show that made television history and attracted an army of passionate and highly engaged fans," AMC Studios President of Original Programming Dan McDermott said.
"We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of Tales of the Walking Dead will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms."
"This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas - bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before," Gimple adds. "I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans."
Tales of The Walking Dead was announced last September along with a spinoff series focusing on Daryl and Carol. There's been no word on that one for a while, but based on how good American Horror Stories was, for example, we're optimistic that this series could improve on the core show.
Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere in summer 2022 on both AMC and AMC+.
