We knew the writing was on the wall as ratings steadily declined, and AMC has now officially announced that The Walking Dead will soon come to an end.

The network revealed that the zombie survival drama has been renewed for an eleventh and final season, which will run for a massive 24 episodes. No premiere date has been announced, but the first 12 episodes will air next year, with the final 12 concluding the long-running series in 2022. That won't be the last we see of two of the show's most popular characters, however!

It's also been announced that another two spinoff series are currently in the works, and one will focus on the continuing adventures of bonafide badasses Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). The other  is said to be an "anthology themed offshoot."

“It’s been 10 years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” said Scott Gimple in a statement. “What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives”

Added showrunner Angela Kang: “I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years. The Walking Dead flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol. Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”

What do you guys make of this news? Is it time for The Walking Dead to end, or would you have preferred to see it keep on trucking?

@regularmovieguy - i mean we already knew the movies were being made. Plus it already has two spin offs, one just started and another still ongoing. So from that perspective the ending clearly wasnt coming regardless of this daryl carol show.

@regularmovieguy - so the show lost popularity when they killed off most of the characters people cared about, now they are getting rid of everyone except for 2, who from what i remember when i watched it, worked better as supporting characters

Honestly people will be celebrating this but I just see this as nonsensical. Daryl and Carol are the only surviving members of Season 1, so they're basically the main characters. So how is a show about them considered a spin-off. The show literally isn't even ending....so stupid...

@Nightwing1015 - It's like what they've done with Law & Order or NCIS.

Wow, Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride still going strong. I assume Daryl & Carol are a couple on the show. I had stopped watching, but I may comeback for their dynamic. It's always interesting to see shows last SO LONG, that it forces actors to make big decisions. Do they leave their show/financial security, so that they can do other things with their career, or do they just keep playing the same character over & over & over again. Anna Farris had to make that call with her show, Mom. The guys from Supernatural, chose to ride it out.

I wish Norman Reedus would stop feeding AMC and finally spread his wings (no pun intended). The dude was actually a decent actor in the earlier seasons/before Walking Dead, but he got way too comfortable both in the show and in other projects to the point where it's like he forgot how to act.

I feel like there's opportunities waiting for him beyond this show, just like there was for Jon Bernthal. Maybe not to the same extent, but there's definitely jobs waiting for him and he won't take it man.

The Walking Dead already is a show about Daryl and Carol.

Aren’t they already basically the main characters?

This show lost its luster a long time ago. And the spin offs or continuation or whatever the hell they want to call it was inevitable. Hopefully they’re not long lasting.

If this was the 1970s it would be “The Daryl & Carol Variety Hour” with singing and dancing zombies.

Shit that actually sounds like a stoners good time. 🤷‍♂️🤣🌬💨

I think the walking dead shot themselves in the foot when they killed off so many beloved characters or people like andrew lincoln decided to leave. I know asians who never watched the show again after they killed glen.

The Walking Dead is the most comic accurate show so far.

Exactly like the book, the show stopped being any good after the Jail arc.

This show should have ended years ago. Its not good enough to justify 11 seasons, let alone another spinoff series.

Still hping it ends with Rick waking up in the hospital realizing it was all a dream, even though he already left the show
