Lanterns: 5 Ways The Finale Sets Up The DCU's Future (And A Possible Season 2) - Spoilers

The Lanterns finale closes one chapter for John Stewart and Hal Jordan, but what comes next? We look at five major ways the finale may have set up the show's future and the wider DCU.

Lanterns brought its first season to a close last Sunday, delivering some major developments for John Stewart while leaving plenty of unanswered questions about where the HBO series could go next. With the DCU's future still taking shape, the finale has also planted some intriguing seeds for both a potential Season 2 and the wider franchise.

The series has split opinions, particularly in its handling of Hal Jordan and his apparent lack of a future beyond this eight-episode season. However, there are hints that we haven't seen the last of the veteran Green Lantern.

From Hal shocking death and Sinestro's mysterious plans to the emergence of a new Green Lantern and a potentially huge threat hiding in plain sight, there's a lot to unpack. Here are five ways the Lanterns finale could be setting the stage for what's next...

5. Hal Jordan's Resurrection

halogram knew v0 ifn828puf5th1 copy

Despite Sinestro's bold claim that he can bring Hal Jordan back from the dead, there's nothing concrete in the finale to suggest the hero will be brought back in any form.

The Halogram is seemingly deleted from the ring when John Stewart says his new oath, and we know the real deal was shot in the head and killed in cold blood by his girlfriend, Sheriff Kerry, after he offered to take her and her son, the Manhunter Noah, to safety. With that in mind, a potential Season 2 return seems doubtful.

However, the backlash from fans to Hal's murder has been more vocal than James Gunn and company could have imagined. While Lanterns tried its hardest to tear him down to build John Stewart up, this attempted character assassination has failed. So, how better to win fans back than by simply undoing Hal's premature demise? At the very least, Sinestro's comments have left the door ajar...

4. Parallax

Parallax copy

Lanterns doesn't do a particularly good job of explaining, well, anything. We know that Zoe unleashed some kind of fear-based weapon on the planet she ravaged, and that it's been left infected and uninhabitable. However, the lantern that Noah forced Sinestro to use is imbued with that fear, and is now being used to power John's ring.

While we wouldn't expect a series as grounded as Lanterns to suddenly throw a glowing yellow space monster into the mix (an admittedly simplistic description of the embodiment of fear), there are ways to adapt Parallax that could be really quite fascinating.

Whether it's Sinestro realising he can weaponise the ravaged planet or John slowly being infected as Hal was in the comics, the potential is there to make great use of this concept. If Hal somehow returns as the villainous Parallax, wearing the rings of the slain Green Lantern Corps members he killed between seasons on Oa, then we'd have no complaints, provided redemption eventually follows.

3. The Sinestro Corps

Sinestro Corps War copy

It's impossible to imagine Lanterns ever pitting John Stewart against Sinestro and his "Sinestro Corps." For starters, the series has an aversion to aliens that look like anything other than regular humans, but that doesn't mean the villain can't return with a much bigger role in Season 2.

We still don't know why he killed that Guardian of the Universe, and seeing as he has the skill to create a new lantern, it stands to reason that he can make another (as well as a ring to go with it). Seeing as John left him chained up to die, it makes perfect sense for Sinestro to arrive on Earth, wielding yellow energy, eager for revenge.

Sinestro didn't get much screen time in Lanterns, and he never really felt like Hal's greatest enemy or even a villain capable of being a big bad. That can change with the right story, though it's obviously hard not to be concerned that the DCU's Sinestro might wield the power of racism instead of fear, based on how Season 1 went.

2. Noah As The DCU's Big Bad

Lanterns finale Noah solo.1 copy

I mean, this has to be where the DCU is going, right? Nearly three years in, this franchise has no obvious big bad or endgame, and Gunn has said that Lanterns ties into the wider story being told, so it has to be the Manhunter child of the woman who killed Hal Jordan and got away with it.

Noah told John that there's part of him that intends to find fame and fortune before eventually becoming a politician and making his way into the Pentagon. From there, he can take over the planet or start World War III, and he even forces Sinestro to make him a lantern so that he can use the power of a Green Lantern to deal with those who oppose him.

John's response? To let him go and play football. That decision is bound to come back and haunt him, and it seems entirely possible that he'll be a major threat in Lanterns Season 2 or perhaps even a Justice League movie. Darkseid, who?

1. Earth's New Green Lantern

LAN 108 060625 JJ 0247 R H 2026 copy

Wearing the ring of the dead man whose killer he let go free, John emasculates Guy Gardner, demands he leave Earth, and then creates a new oath before flying off as the planet's new (unofficial) Green Lantern. The journey is strange, but 10 years after he first started training, John has finally become Green Lantern.

We know that John will return in Man of Tomorrow, likely suited up and doing his thing as Earth's new protector. Hopefully, Gunn will show what the former Marine is capable of, as the extent of his imagination in Lanterns was using the ring as a lighter and creating a bird construct.

This character has endless potential, something fans of Justice League International will be quick to tell you. With any luck, John will get to fulfil his potential on the big screen moving forward, and not in another primarily Earth-based season of Lanterns. Ultimately, this hinges on what, if anything, Gunn has planned for him.

At least the Snyderverse felt cohesive (little exception to the goofiness in Aquaman movies). The movies felt like they belong in the same universe.

I am supposed to believe Lanterns, and the cartoon Creature Commandos, Clayface, and goofy Superman movie are in the same world?

This Gunn DCU stinks.

@JobinJ - Im sorry for youre lack of imagination. I dont think we need another MCU and I really enjoy the diversity of tonality of every project. In my humble opinion the mayority of the MCU feels boring and uninspired. I had a lot of hopes for the second Dr.Strange film, but it was just another generic Marvel movie. I dont even wanna talk about those boring TV Series (with the exeption of maybe Loki or WandaVision). I hoped for a better finale of Lanterns, but it is what it is and I had a lot of fun in the way to it.

And in two weeks we can see clayface. Im grateful for the DCU.

@JobinJ - "I am supposed to believe Lanterns, and the cartoon Creature Commandos, Clayface, and goofy Superman movie are in the same world?"

I don't understand this criticism. Serial Killers, Babies, Life, and Death exist in the same world. Everyday of someone's life has a different tone depending how they're feeling. Everything should not look or feel the same or else you get the corporate monotonous slop known as the MCU

Is it weird they haven't greenlit another season yet? I feel like nowadays they greenlight next seasons almost immediately. Are they waiting to see how James Gunn radically alters the character in the movie before writing the next story?

Cass

I think the plan is to set John up as the one who falls to becoming a yellow lantern, instead of Hal. For starters, he has and is using a yellow lantern. He is actively operating against the interests of the guardians and chased their guy off of earth.

The big one for me though that I thought would be addressed was John’s building project. Building a thousand shelters for people to be ready to hide in, it’s clearly a fear-motivated project. I thought they were going to make something of that towards the end but they didn’t. Instead they had John double down on fear with his weird oath and yellow lantern.

@Cass - I tend to agree. I think they are swapping Hal's story with John. I think John is destined to become Parallax because of the fear in the lantern.

The second season should cover the founding of the Sinestro Corps, and the Planet of Fear should serve as the Corps' headquarters.

"the backlash from fans to Hal's murder has been more vocal than James Gunn and company could have imagined. While Lanterns tried its hardest to tear him down to build John Stewart up, this attempted character assassination has failed." Hahahahaha, JG & Co. are just fine, but I guess Joshy & his Legion of Angry Nerds can keep trying to convince peeps, the majority of whom like the show, that their like should be hate. Because negative-take clickbait works sometimes? SMH... Maybe try making something yourselves? Then we can post our opinions about it as if they're facts.

@JoshWilding - Because that's not irony because that's not what I did. Nice try, tho, bro. Also, this barely qualifies as an article.

Josh: "Everybody hates it!" Majority of people: "Um, no, we didn't. We kinda liked it." Josh: "Of course you hated it! How could you not? I don't think it's good, so it can't be!!!" And then @FireGunn farts out his opinion as fact: "The show is objectively divisive and it's shit!"

Mmmmmmmkay, boys.
Radders
Radders - 10/9/2026, 8:58 AM
@seakhan - Nah, it's irony dude, sorry.
Though it has to be said, your opinion is just a logical fallacy using a divisive tool.
The idea that you cant criticise unless you make something yourself is akin to telling someone they can't complain about burnt food because they're not a chef - its nonsensicle.

You like the show, cool, other people don't, that's also cool. Just because they don't share your opinion doesn't make them a hater anymore than you are a shill - Though, in my opinion, it does make them better judges of writing.
seakhan
seakhan - 10/9/2026, 10:36 AM
@Radders - If I'm a shill, still waiting on my check from DC studios! Nah, sorry, dude, I just saw a good show, period. And I've seen a heap of comic book movie shit, so don't play like I just eat it all up. Lots of people like their meat burnt! And yeah, not saying you have to. Because that's my personal opinion, not some infallible judgment from on high (or more accurately, from @FireGunn's mom's basement). You can criticize anything whatever & however much you want, bro, doesn't mean you're "right". Or that I'm right! You might refuse to see how someone can see it as a good show, doesn't make them wrong. And if you try to do what these writers & filmmakers did, even just a 5-minute short film or whatever, I promise you will view criticism differently, you'll start to understand that even your best intentions don't always come across. Some might see what you were going for & even recognize it, but if your entire reason for being is to be a comment section warrior or even to run a website where you post "articles" that are really just dressed-up comment section posts, you'll never understand what it takes to actually make what wankers like Joshy keyboard-crusade against. And no offense, but if you say you don't like something, it's whatever; if Martin Scorsese says it, it's discussed for years. He's the better judge because he makes things, some of our greatest things -- that's why his opinion carries a ton more weight. Someone who hasn't created jack? Not so much. But if you're good with basically Yelp reviews & Rotten Tomatoes school grading system, amen to you, I guess.

I’ll never forget reading the headline, "LANTERNS Is So Good, It Silenced My Inner Comic Nerd Complaints." That perfectly sums up my experience. Could I rip the show apart for comic inaccuracies? Absolutely. But honestly, you could do that with every superhero adaptation. I remember bitching for months about Peter Parker getting his suit from Tony Stark back when Civil War came out, but I still loved the movie once I just learned to let it go.
Same applies here. As someone who owns a ton of Green Lantern comics and knows the lore inside and out, I just really enjoyed Lanterns. The cast was amazing, the directing was great, and the script held it all together. I really hope we get a Season 2—ideally with a bigger budget so we can see some heavier ring action!"

@IMCOOLURNOT -

It really was a solid show. The ending was a little lackluster but nothing catastrophic.

I agree. I mean look at the Dark Knight, how “accurate” to Batman’s lore was that film, if we being honest? 🤔

We can’t cherry pick what’s comic accurate and what’s not.

Obviously TDK, Spider-Man 2, GOTG, and many other good comic films prove that comic book accuracy may have importance but it doesn’t equal good quality. Just like inaccuracy doesn’t necessarily equal bad quality.

My guess is it will be parallax given the setup and the fact it would play into how John’s ring has yellow in it. My guess would be that Paralax appears as Hal Jordan, which would allow Chandler to return.

The writer of Absolute Superman pitched this as "The Dark Knight Returns for Hal Jordan". Sounds interesting.
