Lanterns Ending Explained: Who Killed Hal Jordan, Is He Alive, And Does John Stewart Become Green Lantern?

The final episode of Lanterns is now streaming on HBO Max, but is Hal Jordan really dead, and if so, who killed him? More importantly, does John Stewart finally become the DCU's Green Lantern?

Lanterns has wrapped up its first season, but not necessarily in the way many fans hoped for or expected. After finding Sinestro on the planet once ravaged by the Manhunter Zoe, John Stewart learns that Noah, a teenage boy and secret Manhunter, broke the villain out of his intergalactic jail and brought him there to forge a new Lantern.

However, the fear that's somehow infected the planet runs throughout that Lantern, a concept that at least teases the idea of a fear-based Sinestro Corps somewhere down the line (or John being infected by fear, not unlike Hal Jordan was in the comics). There is no yellow power battery or ring, though, and the last we see of Sinestro is him in chains on that planet, claiming he has a way of bringing Hal back to life.

That's another potential tease for down the line, but not one this season of Lanterns touches on. Back on Earth, flashbacks confirm that someone firebombed Hal's house, and that Noah—the result of an immaculate conception when Zoe regrew Sheriff Kerry's pinky—used Manhunter technology to heal Hal. While he initially tells John that he killed the former Green Lantern, we soon discover that, when Hal told Kerry what he'd found out about the boy, she shot and killed him, right as he was saying the words, "I love you."

John decides that, despite Noah saying part of him wants to become a famous football player and use that fame to access the Pentagon (potentially becoming the biggest threat Earth has ever seen), he'll give him a chance to live his life and won't turn Kerry in for what she did to Hal. Apparently, it's what the fallen hero would have wanted.

With that, John signals Guy Gardner to come back to Earth and makes it clear that he's going to serve as Earth's unofficial Green Lantern. Guy can take space and the rest of Sector 2814, but he'll use Hal's ring and Sinestro's Lantern to protect the planet and keep an eye on Noah.

They part ways, and after an emotional farewell to the Halogram, John recites his own oath: "In brightest day, in darkest night, I’ll embrace my fear, I’ll do what’s right. I choose this ring. I choose this fight. In service to this Lantern’s light."

So, with Lanterns over, Hal Jordan is still very much dead, despite Sinestro's claims that he can resurrect him. There's also no sign of the Sinestro Corps, or any hint at what implications there will be for using a Lantern forged by the villain with fear (Noah wanted his own ring, so that no one could oppose if/him when he rose to power). John, who immediately takes flight, also reunites with his parents and is now poised to serve as a new Green Lantern, who isn't a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

That seemingly closes the door on him ever crossing paths with the Guardians of the Universe or any other alien members of the group, as he sends Guy back with a message that will ensure he's left alone: "If they search their hearts, I know they’ll find it within themselves to let me be." In other words, the fear of a Manhunter being on Earth should keep them in check and allow him to do his thing.

There's no suit reveal, and for those keeping count, not so much as a single Green Lantern construct in the final episode. We do, however, get a hint that Guy is also a little racist, when he mockingly refers to John as "homes."

Overall I liked this season, but Damn it just lt weird that John let Kerry off like that despite what Hal would've wanted, not to mention Earth now has a Manhunter being left unchecked that wants to infiltrate the governemnt...

So calling someone "homes" is now considered racist? I had a black friend and co-worker who called me that all the time.
