Lanterns: James Gunn Hits Back At Unhappy Hal Jordan Fans: "Sorry If You Don't Like It"

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has finally weighed in on the unhappiness surrounding Hal Jordan's portrayal in Lanterns, defending the DCU's take on the hero and hinting at the hero's future.

Lanterns has scored largely very positive reviews, but among comic book fans, the series is proving highly divisive. That's almost solely down to the portrayal of Hal Jordan; the hero has been aged up, vilified (that's not hyperbole; he went to prison for his actions in 2016 and no one attended his funeral), and is ultimately a far cry from the comics.

While there is precedent for Hal breaking bad—and going mad—on the page, Lanterns has yet to suggest it's heading down the Parallax route. All may yet be forgiven depending on the final two episodes, but as of now, it seems Hal is really dead and will never be portrayed as a true hero.

Fans have been expressing their frustrations on social media, calling out DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn for the creative decisions made with Hal. Now, the executive and filmmaker has broken his silence on the backlash with two lengthy posts on Threads.

"I'd say avid comics readers are well aware of the differences from universe to universe," Gunn started. "Whether it's the DCU or Earth 0 or the Absolute Universe, they all pay homage to these iconic characters, retelling their stories in different ways. Heck, even the MCU combined elements of the Ultimate universe, the 616, and original ideas."

"That's how these things work," he continued. "But if you want the DCU to take the exact trajectory of whatever your favorite comics continuity is, that's probably not going to happen."

Touching more directly on Hal, Gunn said, "Hal's the star of [a] TV series [and] he's in all the episodes so far. It's more live-action screen time than all the live-action screen time he's had combined throughout history. Kyle is amazing in the role."

"We more than respect him. We love him, despite his imperfections," he said of the DCU's Hal. "Us knowing the time of his death, if that's exactly what that is, is absolutely not the same thing as killing him off right away. Hal is a big reason why the show is so popular with fans [and] non-fans alike; sorry if you don't like it."

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that Gunn has hinted that Hal might not be dead after all. Whether Lanterns ends with the former Green Lantern renewed, redeemed, or as a full-blown villain, that would arguably be all that's needed to end the complaints about Hal's DCU portrayal.

Still, DC Studios will still have to reckon with fans who aren't pleased with a grounded take on the Green Lantern Corps that's led to minimal space-set action, few constructs, and a Hal who is not the hero they know from the comics.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Six episodes of Lanterns are now streaming on HBO Max.

They didn't care that Marvel never religiously covered comic book story lines. They never cared that Zack Snyder made up his own crap. But now all the sudden they care?

@bobevanz - Ah, the old "two wrongs makes a who cares" argument. Reminds me of when my little brother would get in trouble and try to bring up something unrelated that I had done to divert attention from his mistake.

How about this: Gunn's mischaracterization of Hal is equally as terrible as Snyder's mischaracterization of Batman.

@bobevanz - People are addicted to complaining nowadays, that's the problem. And they have a vehicle to complain all day and all night, every day and every night — with others agreeing with them along the way

Gunn is correct about characters being portrayed differently in different universes. However, if I don't want to read the Ultimate or Absolute Universes, I still have the regular one to fall back on. There's only ONE live-action DCU, and in that, Hal Jordan is a failure who went to prison and had a funeral with three people, including a 60+ Carol Ferris who seemed to have little love for him. The last two episodes have a lot of heavy lifting to do if it is gonna make this right.

@JoshWilding - Then you can stick with the comics if thats where your ideal universe is, thats the point. No one's forcing you to watch and review things you don't like (not to be hostile, I appreciate your work). If Gunns DCU fails, it fails. Every opinion I see online about the show is either "WOW this show is so good!" or "Waahh they did Hal dirty", not much in between. I think Aaron Pierre will make a fine Green Lantern if he gets that far.

@whatthetruck - I have enjoyed the series, but not the portrayal of Hal. I still think the final two episodes could redeem it, but I'm not at all surprised that this one is dividing opinions. I think it says a lot that Gunn couldn't deliver a fan-pleasing take on Green Lantern when the bar was so low after the movie in 2011.

@JoshWilding - I could be wrong, you'd probably know better, I just don't feel like its a unanimous failure, just a snub of Hal. There are plenty of fans that would love to see John Stewart in the role - on that front, they delivered.
The only hope left for the character is Paralax, if you get my drift. 🤞for you.

JoshWilding - 9/22/2026, 9:37 AM
@whatthetruck - Definitely not an overall failure, but I don't think it's a huge win either. While John isn't the most likeable character at times, I am eager to see him in Man of Tomorrow and hopeful that Hal will become Paralax or perhaps step back before making a big return in a future movie or series with a new Green Lantern ring.

@JoshWilding - the show is a hit, but yet a story that plays up the negative side. always. do you think enough of us positive people arent around this site to keep it afloat with more positive articles. every hit show has detractors but it seems CBM shows and movies need to have its detractors catered to constantly, despite numbers showing they are clearly in the minority when it comes to overall reception of this show. whatever dude.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 9/22/2026, 9:42 AM
@supermanrex - Actually, based on Nielsen data, the show may not be the hit that those HBO press releases suggested. The show's audience scores are also quite middling for a superhero series (in the 70s). And there's heaps of positivity on the site - I don't see what's negative about this story at all. Gunn squabbling with random fans who have 30 followers is nothing new.

@JoshWilding - episode 6 is probably the first episode I really didn't like. I've noticed the lack of constructs before, but this episode was blatantly lacking. It also just felt like a filler episode taking close to an hour adjusting its audience to the new timeline/2026 when a lot of it could have been done 20 to 30 minutes in.
Other than this past episode, I've pretty much loved the series, but I'll highly unlikely ever watch it again. Chief among a few reasons is the 2011 film's short time on Oa had 50 million more times the constructs than this entire series has had and probably will. End of the day, you can work hard on story, which is good, but it's a superhero show that people are fans of because of what a GL can do.

However, I do believe people are selling the DCU character of Hal short. I'll put in parentheses what Gunn said that might prove it:
"Us knowing the time of his death, (if that's exactly what that is), is absolutely not the same thing as killing him off right away."
Kinda a giveaway that there's more to the character than the series is initially letting on.

@FireGunn - Its fine to watch something and not enjoy it, it's another thing to keep going back to it, episode after episode, to watch what you already hate, then post comments about your nitpicks and how [frick]ed the ENTIRE universe is now, rather than weigh your dissatisfaction against the rest of the show when it finishes (if you make it that far) like a sane person. It's like how people watch a trailer and make their judgement about the entire show, it's dumb as shit.

@JoshWilding - I'll be very honest. Im kinda surprised , disappointed even to see such media illiterate takes from you. Hal is a nuanced character here and much more relatable.I would even go so far as to say that he is pretty close to the way Neal Adams and Denny O Neil were writing him. They were very clear about setting John up to be the mainline Gl for the DCU . The fact that we even got this incredible portrayal from Kyle Chandler is a gift in and of itself. As comic book readers we have to be open to new adaptations the way we are open to new editorial runs. Otherwise it will be the same archetype stories being told over and over. I am no fan of Tom King and his indulgence but they really have done a great job here. I know its supposed to be John's story but its so obvious these Gen Xers love Hal Jordan. He feels so human and not some intangible construct. The fact that Carol even showed up in the first place gives you insight into her character and their past relationship.

JoshWilding - 9/22/2026, 12:48 PM
@Ojeet78 - This "media illiterate" line I keep seeing from Lanterns' most ardent supporters is boring and a really dumb counterargument (at this point, it's as bad as calling someone "woke").

With all due respect, you sound like someone who is starving and happy to be served gruel - "we knew Hal would never be the DCU's Green Lantern, so let's be grateful that we at least got a good performance from the 60-year-old they cast" and "they threw us a crumb with a 30-second Carol cameo, so who cares about her decades of history that's been thrown aside - we know she exists!" — but I'm not denying that Chandler is superb in the role. However, that can be true at the same time as this series delivering a crappy take on the character.

Hal didn't need to be an "intangible construct," but he also didn't need to be a washed-up superhero who's a selfish asshole and wholly unlikeable. If you were truly media literate, you'd see that they're knocking Hal down to build John up, a staple of this show's bad writing. Overall, it's a compelling weekly watch, but they've dropped the ball IMHO. I do look forward to seeing more of John moving forward.
Ojeet78
Ojeet78 - 9/22/2026, 1:11 PM
@JoshWilding - I agree that line is overused so i am sorry for using it again. I wouldn't say Im starving, I'm just surprised people are reacting this way. A guy being told he'll be replaced after years in the service and he can't even act out. Him reacting like that was what made him a fully developed character. But anyway, disagreements are bound to happen. My personal take is that they are having so much fun with Hal that they are at times forgetting that John and the other characters exist.

@TheUnworthyThor - thats the tv show formula.

you start with flaw characters and expect the audience to stick around for 5-6 years to flesh out the journey that would've been done in 1 movie. So when your on season 10 like Smallville or Flash tv show, the hero will finally become who you want him to be.
