Lanterns Now Has The Lowest Audience Score Of Any DCU Project On Rotten Tomatoes

Despite positive reviews from critics, fans are split on DC Studios' Lanterns. Now, that's reflected in the show's Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, especially compared to the rest of the DCU.

Critics have widely praised Lanterns, but comic book fans seem to have a different take on the latest DCU project. The HBO Max TV series started with a glowing 89% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter, but that's plummeted to 70% since the finale aired last Sunday.

7/10 isn't bad, right? Maybe, maybe not; either way, this makes Lanterns the lowest-rated DCU movie or TV show since the franchise launched in 2023.

Creature Commandos has a 79% score from fans, while Superman kept the momentum going with a "Verified Hot" 90%. Peacemaker Season 2—which many felt dropped the ball with its finale—has 79%, and even Supergirl has beaten Lanterns at 72%.

While DC Studios' take on the Green Lantern mythos was well-received by critics, it seems James Gunn and Peter Safran made a major misstep with its handling of Hal Jordan and John Stewart in the eyes of fans (the very people the studio needs to get on side after the DCEU's many low points).

Aaron Pierre is set to reprise his role as John in Man of Tomorrow, and if he shows up in a comic-accurate costume with a whole host of constructs in tow, it might be enough to win over those dissatisfied with his portrayal in Lanterns.

Unfortunately, there's likely no undoing the damage done to Hal Jordan, a character the creative team seemingly set out to destroy over the course of the eight-episode series (with one writer branding him a racist). That's backfired, however, as many fans chose to look past that interpretation and have expressed a hope to see more of Hal down the line.

HBO has not disclosed viewership data for the Lanterns finale, and there's no word on a Season 2 renewal. Previously, HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed that The People vs. Gorilla Grodd is the only DCU TV series currently in active development.

"Lanterns' leads shine bright," we wrote in our Season 1 review, "but even they can't save this abysmal adaptation of the comics that, embarrassed by the source material it's based on, delivers a woefully bland and uninspired take on Green Lantern that's another miss for the DCU."

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

Lanterns is now streaming in its entirety on HBO Max.

@ProfessorWhy - This show got FAR less viewership than Penguin and it only got 1 season....and yet the Gunn squad thinks this turd of a show should get a second season.

The series clearly lacked having a scene with Sinestro offering Hal a reach around. Could’ve also used more neck snapping…Lots more neck snapping…………..

@vegetaray -
Step 1- snap neck
Step 2- rob grave
Step 3- appoint self independent police officer who answers to no one.

Just like all the DC classics

Kyle's Hal was most of the reason I wanted to binge it when it was over with.

Now I know better.

They are making season 2. The show was widely received well. Was the ending perfect? No. But I cannot wait to see the show.

"Critics have widely praised Lanterns, but comic book fans seem to have a different take on the latest DCU project." Wow what a shocker.

The last we heard, the series was doing well in the ratings and I hope the creatives keep ignoring toxic idiots like Josh and most of the commenters on this website and do their own thing as it's working for normal people

I liked it, but the finale was a miss for me. It just seemed that the whole reveal around the murder was underwhelming. Not to mention, it still doesn't sit right with me that a murderer is still free and in a position of power after killing Hal. I really was hoping they'd do more with Sinestro as well, but there's always the possibility we can get more of his story shown down the road, I guess🤷🏾‍♂️

Rotten Tomatoes audience scores matters now cause it means something negative for the DCU and Josh‘s continuous negative spin articles lmao. The shows objectively a critical and streaming success (implying that it’s not because it hasn’t out streamed syndicated cultural phenomenon shows like The Big Bang Theory and Lost is just a bad take for countless reasons) so now the focus needs to be on fandom backlash to fit the narrative that the DCU is destined for failure since its success complicates that narrative.

Wow.

Almost 90%, then Ellison not only doesn't fire Gunn but actively supports his 10 year plan LIKE I TOLD YOU and the #RestoreTheSnyderverse thing is on it's last legs.

Now it's 70%.

Wow. Who'd da thunk?

Let's see if I got this right. Warner Brothers makes a highly budgeted Green Lantern Comic Book film in 2011 full of colors, and glowing space laser beams and slapstick comedy that the "comic book fans" are clamoring for and loses money on that venture.

They then make a moderately budgeted grounded and character driven Green Lantern Comic Book TV show and it becomes the talk of the Internet with glowing critic reviews and is watched as signified by increasingly higher viewership ratings and what Warner Brothers should do is go back to what Comic book fans want. The same people that did not show up for the 2011 film or any of the other films made in that same format whereas EVERY grounded show or film has thrived.

Gee...what should Warner Brothers do going forward.

This show was a breath of fresh air and revived a dead franchise. The same way Batman Begins brought back a dead Batman franchise. Whether one liked the finale or not taken together this show was massive success.

@Forthas - People were more discerning back then and it was a bad film, so its a flawed comparison.
I actually find it quite disappointing that people think this was good let alone well written but then Avatar is one of the highest grossing movies, so hey, different strokes

@Radders - Not that I hold critic ratings in such high regard these days given the amount of shills that are used to boost those ratings, but this show was positively received by critics. I loved the show even if I don't think it was perfect and the Finale left much to be desired. But the acting was stellar, the story was gripping and layered, and the setting was relatable if at the heart of these live action films and show you ask yourself "what would that comic book character be like in the real world?* In that respect the show delivered the goods.

Could it be the result of "review-bombing"? That's the usual go-to defense.

@TheFinestSmack - You talking about Snyder’s fembase…err…I mean fanbase (🙄)? Or the 13% AI bots they were running to get that shitty “Snyder-cut” nonsense off the ground? Because that stuff definitely doesn’t happen (🙄🙄)
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 10/8/2026, 9:20 AM
@vegetaray - Guess it could any of that. I'm just to this site leaning into "review-bombing" of any kind whenever an audience rating gets low.
